Advantages of adhesively bonded joints and techniques of weight reduction have led to increasing use of structural adhesives such as LSI(large scale integration) package, automobile, aircraft in the various industries. In spite of such wide applications of adhesively bonded joints, the evaluation method of bonding strength has not been established. Stress singularity occurs at the interface edges of adhesively bonded joints and it is required to analyze it. In this paper, the stress singularity using 2-dimensional elastic boundary element method (BEM) with the changes of the lap length and adhesive for single lap joint was analyzed, and experiments of strength evaluation were carried out. As the results, the evaluating method of bonding strength considering stress singularity at interface edges of adhesively bonded joints and stress intensity factor of interface crack have been proposed in static and fatigue test.
It is well recognized that the ultrasonic method is one of the most common and reliable nondestructive testing (NDT) methods for the quantitative estimation of defects in welded structures. However, NDT techniques applying for adhesively bonded joints have not been clearly established yet. In this paper, the detection of interface crack by the ultrasonic method was applied for the measurement of interfacial crack length in the adhesively bonded joints of double-cantilever beam (DCB). An optimal condition of transmission coefficients and experimental accuracy by the ultrasonic method in the adhesively bonded joints have been investigated and discussed. The experimental values are in good agreement with the computed results by boundary element method (BEM) and Ripling's equation.

A proper estimation of the mechanical properties for composites has been required for better design/selection of constituents for composite materials. Present investigation shows the simulation results for ceramic reinforced metal matrix composite under uniaxial transverse tensile loading. The resulting transverse mean stress with the transverse mean strain was described for composites as a function of the volume fraction with two different types of interfacial bonding: (1)strongly bonded interface, and (2)no bonded interface. A two-dimensional finite element modeling and analysis were conducted based on the unit-cell concept with an assumption of a regular square arrangement of the reinforcement within the composite. The mean stress was generally increased with the ceramic volume fraction for composite with strong interface bonding. The micromechanics concept combined with finite element modeling for composite can be used in order to predict the transverse properties of composites with a priori known properties of constituents.
This paper deals with the stress singularity developed in a polymer layer that is coated to a concrete surface, due to temperature change. The boundary element method is employed to investigate the behavior of interface stresses. The polymeric layer is assumed to be a linear viscoelastic material, and is thermorheologically simple. The order of the singularity is obtained, numerically, for a given viscoelastic model. Numerical results exhibit the relaxation of interface stresses, and large gradients are observed in the vicinity of the free surface. Results show that the stress singularity factor is relaxed with time, while the order of the singularity increases with time for the viscoelastic model.
This paper presents plastic limit loads and approximate J-integral estimates for circumferential part-through surface crack at the interface between elbows and pipes. Based on finite element limit analyses using elastic-perfectly plastic materials, plastic limit moments under in-plane bending are obtained and it is found that they are similar those for circumferential part-through surface cracks in the center of elbow. Based on present FE results, closed-form limit load solutions are proposed. Welds are not explicitly considered and all materials are assumed to be homogeneous. And the method to estimate the elastic-plastic J-integral for circumferential part-through surface cracks at the interface between elbows and straight pipes is proposed based on the reference stress approach, which was compared with corresponding solutions for straight pipes.

In this study, stress analysis using Boundary Element Method (BEM) was carried to investigate stress distribution in the brazing joint between a Hardmetal and a HSS. The two models were proposed to analyze the stress singularity in the interfaces of the brazing joint. The material type, thickness of the filler metal and the length of the vertical brazing adhesive are considered in the BEM analysis. As results, the peak point of the stress is founded to be in the lower interface of the brazed joint. It should be noted that the maximum stress of the peak point is being affected by the thickness and length of the brazing joint.

Steel plate bonding technique is most widely used in strengthening of existing concrete structures, but it has inherently a problem of the premature failure such as interface separation and rip off. So far, many studies have been arid out in the manner of laboratory tests for the reinforced concrete beams to find out he mechanism of the premature failure. However, in order to verify the characteristics of the premature failure, more reasonable local investigations are needed rather than such relatively global experimental works. In this study, therefore, the double lap test which simulate the pure shear loadings and the half beam tests which consider combined flexure-shear force have been done. There are, however, difficulties in getting the normal stress caused to premature failure, so that finite element analysis was performed, too. In numerical study, material nonlinearity was considered, and the interface element was applied to model the interface between steel plate and adhesive. From the results of experimental and numerical studies, a realistic failure criterion on the separation of steel plates has been derived.

We propose a consistent numerical method for elliptic interface problems with nonhomogeneous jumps. We modify the discontinuous bubble immersed finite element method (DB-IFEM) introduced in (Chang et al. 2011), by adding a consistency term to the bilinear form. We prove optimal error estimates in L2 and energy like norm for this new scheme. One of the important technique in this proof is the Bramble-Hilbert type of interpolation error estimate for discontinuous functions. We believe this is a first time to deal with interpolation error estimate for discontinuous functions. Numerical examples with various interfaces are provided. We observe optimal convergence rates for all the examples, while the performance of early DB-IFEM deteriorates for some examples. Thus, the modification of the bilinear form is meaningful to enhance the performance.

Recently, ceramic / metal bonded joints have led to inccreasing use of structural materials such as automobile, heat engine in various industries. In this paper, a method to analyze an interface crack under both residual stresses and applied loading was proposed. and some results of boundary element method(BEM) analysis Were presented, Fracture thoughness tests of ceramic/metals bonded joints with an interface crack Were carried out, and the stress intensity factors of these joints Ware analyzed by BEM. Also crack propagtion direction was simulated numerically by using BEM. Crack propagation angle was able to easily determine based on the maximum stress concept. The prediction of fracture strength by the fracture thoughness of the ceramics/metals bonded joints was proposed.
