This study is a part of research to develop a steel-concrete hybrid girder using ultra high-performance concrete with a compressive strength of 80 MPa. To this end, the Eurocode design formula for the shear resistance developed in a concrete-to-concrete interface was examined for the interface between concrete layers of different strengths. To examine the effect of the surface roughness on the shear resistance, a push-out test was conducted on specimens while considering the parameters of the Eurocode design equation. The actual behavior was evaluated with respect to the compressive strength of the concrete, the reinforcement ratio of the shear rebar, and the interfacial surface condition. The specimen with a rough interface shows 20-50% higher shear strength than that estimated by the design equation. In the case of failure mode, abrupt failure tends to occur at the interface of the concrete layer for the specimen with a low reinforcement ratio. It is expected that the shear strength of the concrete layer will increase according to the strength differential in the concrete layers.
PURPOSES: In Korea, rapid maintenance of distressed concrete pavement is required to prevent traffic jam of the highway. Asphalt concrete overlay has been used as a general maintenance method of construction for aged concrete pavement. AC overlay on existing concrete pavements experience various early distresses such as reflection crack, pothole and rutting, due to different physical characteristics between asphalt overlay and existing concrete pavement. Bonded concrete overlay(BCO) is a good alternative since it has advantages that can reduce various distresses during the service life since overlay material has similar properties with existing concrete pavements. Recently, BCO which uses the ultra rapid harding cement has been applied for maintenance of highway. BCO has advantage of structural performance since it does monolithic behave with existing pavement. Therefore, it is important to have a suitable bond strength criteria for securing performance of BCO. Bond strength criteria should be larger than normal tensile stress and horizontal shear stress occurred by traffic and environmental loading at bond interface. Normal tensile stress and horizontal shear stress need to estimated for the establishment of practical bond strength criteria. METHODS: This study aimed to estimate the bond stresses at the interface of BCO using the three dimensional finite element analysis. RESULTS: As a result of this study, major failure mode and maximum bond stress are evaluated through the analysis of normal tensile stress and horizontal shear stress for various traffic and environmental load conditions. CONCLUSIONS: It was known that normal tensile stresses are dominated by environmental loading, and, horizontal shear stresses are dominated by traffic loading. In addition, bond failure occurred by both of normal tensile stresses and horizontal shear stresses; however, normal tensile stresses are predominated over horizontal shear stresses.

Steel-concrete composite beam with profiled steel sheet has gained its popularity in the last two decades. Due to the ageing of these structures, retrofitting in terms of flexural strength is necessary to ensure that the aged structures can carry the increased traffic load throughout their design life. The steel ribs, which presented in the profiled steel deck, limit the use of shear connectors. This leads to a poor degree of composite action between the concrete slab and steel beam compared to the solid slab situation. As a result, the shear connectors that connects the slab and beam will be subjected to higher shear stress which may also require strengthening to increase the load carrying capacity of an existing composite structure. While most of the available studies focus on the strengthening of longitudinal shear and flexural strength separately, the present work investigates the effect of both flexural and longitudinal shear strengthening of steel-concrete composite beam with composite slab in terms of failure modes, ultimate load carrying capacity, ductility, end-slip, strain profile and interface differential strain. The flexural strengthening was conducted using carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) or steel plate on the soffit of the steel I-beam, while longitudinal shear capacity was enhanced using post-installed high strength bolts. Moreover, a combination of both the longitudinal shear and flexural strengthening techniques was also implemented (hybrid strengthening). It is concluded that hybrid strengthening improved the ultimate load carrying capacity and reduce slip and interface differential strain that lead to improved composite action. However, hybrid strengthening resulted in brittle failure mode that decreased ductility of the beam.
The effects of aging time on the microstructure and shear strength of the Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC)/Ag pad/Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold (ENIG)/BGA solder joints were investigated through isothermal aging at $150^{\circ}C$ for 1000 h with conventional Sn-37Pb and Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu. $Ni_3Sn_4$ intermetallic compound (IMC) layers was formed at the interface between Sn-37Pb solder and LTCC substrate as-reflowed state, while $(Ni,Cu)_3Sn_4$ IMC layer was formed between Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu solder and LTCC substrate. Additional $(Cu,Ni)_6Sn_5$ layer was found at the interface between the $(Ni,Cu)_3Sn_4$ layer and Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu solder after aging at $150^{\circ}C$ for 500 h. Thickness of the IMC layers increased and coarsened with increasing aging time. Shear strength of both solder joints increased with increasing aging time. Failure mode of BGA solder joints with LTCC substrate after shear testing revealed that shear strength of the joints depended on the adhesion between Ag metallization and LTCC. Fracture mechanism of Sn-37Pb solder joint was a mixture of ductile and pad lift, while that of Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu solder joint was a mixture of ductile and brittle $(Ni,Cu)_3Sn_4$ IMC fracture morphology. Failure mechanisms of LTCC/Ag pad/ENIG/BGA solder joints were also interpreted by finite element analyses.
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the application method of universal adhesives on the shear bond strength (SBS) of repaired composites, applied with different thicknesses. Materials and Methods: The 84 specimens (Filtek Z350 XT) were prepared, stored in distilled water for a week and thermocycled (5,000 cycles, 5℃ to 55℃). They were roughened using 400-grit sandpapers and etched with phosphoric acid. Then, specimens were equally divided into 2 groups; Single Bond Universal (SU) and Prime&Bond Universal (PB). Each group was subdivided into 3 subgroups according to application methods (n = 14); UC: 1 coat + uncuring, 1C: 1 coat + curing, 3C: 3 coats + curing. After storage of the repaired composite for 24 hours, specimens were subjected to the SBS test and the data were statistically analyzed by 2-way analysis of variance and independent t-tests. Specimens were examined with a stereomicroscope to analyze fracture mode and a scanning electron microscope to observe the interface. Results: Adhesive material was a significant factor (p = 0.001). Bond strengths with SU were higher than PB. The highest strength was obtained from the 1C group with SU. Bonding in multiple layers increased adhesive thicknesses, but there was no significant difference in SBS values (p = 0.255). Failure mode was predominantly cohesive in old composites. Conclusions: The application of an adequate bonding system plays an important role in repairing composite resin. SU showed higher SBS than PB and the additional layers increased the adhesive thickness without affecting SBS.

This paper presents the details of Finite Element (FE) analysis carried out to determine the limiting deformation capacity and failure mode of Laced Steel-Concrete Composite (LSCC) beam, which was proposed and experimentally studied by the authors earlier (Anandavalli et al. 2012). The present study attains significance due to the fact that LSCC beam is found to possess very high deformation capacity at which range, the conventional laboratory experiments are not capable to perform. FE model combining solid, shell and link elements is adopted for modeling the beam geometry and compatible nonlinear material models are employed in the analysis. Besides these, an interface model is also included to appropriately account for the interaction between concrete and steel elements. As the study aims to quantify the limiting deformation capacity and failure mode of the beam, a suitable damage model is made use of in the analysis. The FE model and results of nonlinear static analysis are validated by comparing with the load-deformation response available from experiment. After validation, the analysis is continued to establish the limiting deformation capacity of the beam, which is assumed to synchronise with tensile strain in bottom cover plate reaching the corresponding ultimate value. The results so found indicate about $20^{\circ}$ support rotation for LSCC beam with $45^{\circ}$ lacing. Results of parametric study indicate that the limiting capacity of the LSCC beam is more influenced by the lacing angle and thickness of the cover plate.
In the case of CAD/CAM ceramic inlay restorations, if isthmus width is widened too much, it may cause fracture of remaining tooth structure or loss of bonding at the luting interface because of excessive displacement of buccal or lingual cusps under occlusal loads. So to clarify the criterior of widening isthmus width, this study was designed to test the tensile bond strength and bond failure mode between dentin and ceramic cemented with luting composite resin cements. Cylindrical ceramic blocks(Vita Cerec Mark II, d=4mm) were bonded to buccal dentin of 40 freshly extracted third molars with 4 luting composite resin cements(group1 : Scotchbond Resin Cement/Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, group2 : Duolink Resin Cement/ All-Bond 2, group3: Bistite Resin Cement/Ceramics Primer, and group4:Superbond C&B). Tensile bond test was done under universal testing machine using bonding and measuring alignment blocks(${\phi}ilo$ & Urn, 1992). After immersion of fractured samples into 1 % methylene blue for 24 hours, failure mode was analysed under stereomicroscope and SEM. Results: The tensile bond strength of goup 1, 2 & 4 was $13.97{\pm}2.90$ MPa, $16.49{\pm}3.90$ MPa and $16.l7{\pm}4.32$ MPa, respectively. There was no statistical differences(p>0.05). But, group 3 showed significantly lower bond stregnth($5.98{\pm}1.l7$ MPa, p<0.05). In almost all samples, adhesive fractures between dentin and resin cements were observed. But, in group 1, 2 & 4, as bond strength increased, cohesive fracture within resin cement was observed simultaneously. And, in group 3, as bond strength decreased, cohesive fracture between hybrid layer and composite resin cement was also observed. Cohesive fracture within dentin and porcelain adhesive fracture were not observed. In conclusion, although adhesive cements were used in CAD/CAM -fabricated ceramic inlay restorations, the conservative priciples of cavity preparation must be obligated.
This study experimentally investigates the flexural behavior of steel-UHPC composite slabs composed of an innovative negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) steel plate and Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) slab connected via demountable high-strength bolt shear connectors. Eight demountable composite slab specimens were fabricated and tested under traditional four-point bending method. The effects of loading histories (positive and negative bending moment), types of steel plate (NPR steel plate and Q355 steel plate) and spacings of high-strength bolts (150 mm, 200 mm and 250 mm) on the flexural behavior of demountable composite slab, including failure mode, load-deflection curve, interface relative slip, crack width and sectional strain distribution, were evaluated. The results revealed that under positive bending moment, the failure mode of composite slabs employing NPR steel plate was distinct from that with Q355 steel plate, which exhibited that part of high-strength bolts was cut off, part of pre-embedded padded extension nuts was pulled out, and UHPC collapsed due to instantaneous instability and etc. Besides, under the same spacing of high-strength bolts, NPR steel plate availably delayed and restrained the relative slip between steel plate and UHPC plate, thus significantly enhanced the cooperative deformation capacity, flexural stiffness and load capacity for composite slabs further. While under negative bending moment, NPR steel plate effectively improved the flexural capacity and deformation characteristics of composite slabs, but it has no obvious effect on the initial flexural stiffness of composite slabs. Meanwhile, the excellent crack-width control ability for UHPC endowed composite members with better durability. Furthermore, according to the sectional strain distribution analysis, due to the negative Poisson's ratio effect and high yield strength of NPR steel plate, the tensile strain between NPR steel plate and UHPC layer held strain compatibility during the whole loading process, and the magnitude of upward movement for sectional plastic neutral axis could be ignored with the increase of positive bending moment.

The new technique has been used to determine the soil-reinforcement interaction. The testing apparatus is essentially a triaxial cell fitted with the capability to house a hollow cylinderical sample. A hollow cylinderical sand specimen with a concentrical layer of reinfarcing material sandwitched in the middle is used in this investigation. The reinforcement is fastened at the base. The hollow specimen can be viewed as a "unit sheet" of a soil-reinforcement composite system of infinite horizontal extent. Axial load as well as inner and outer chamber pressures can be applied to perform a test. The specimen is first subjected to an isotropic stress state corresponding to the overburden pressure. Next, an extension test by reducing the axial load is carried out. The specimen is "loaded" to failure by either the breakage of reinforcing material (tensile failure) or slippage which takes place at the soil-reinforcement interface (i.e. the overcoming of the bonding capacity). Since the reinforcement is fastened at its lower end to the base, any tendency of relative movement between the reinforcement and the sand during an extension test can induce tensile force in the reinforcement thus forming a "reversed pull-out" test condition. Preliminary test results have demonstrated positively of the new approach to test the soil-reinforcement interaction. Reinforcing elements of different extensibility were used to study the deformbility of reinforced soil. Furthermore, both the breakage and the pull-out modes of failure were observed.

In this study, we carry out reliability tests and investigate the failure mechanisms of the anodically bonded wafer level vacuum packaging (WLVP) MEMS gyroscope sensor. There are three failure mechanisms of WLVP: leakage, permeation and out-gassing. The leakage is caused by small dimension of the leak channel through the bonding interface and internal defects. The larger bonding width and the use of single crystalline silicon can reduce the leak rate. Silicon and glass wafer itself generates a large amount of outgassing including $H_2O$, $C_3H_5$, $CO_2$, and organic gases. Epi-poly wafer generates 10 times larger amount of outgassing than SOI wafer. The sandblasting process in the glass increases outgassing substantially. Outgassing can be minimized by pre-baking of the wafer in the vacuum oven before bonding process. An optimum pre-baking temperature of the wafers would be between $400^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$.
