  • In this study, we fabricated a capacitive humidity sensor with interdigitated (IDT) electrodes using a thermosetting polyimide as a humidifying material. First, the number of electrodes, thickness, and spacing of the polyimide film were optimized, and a mask was designed and fabricated. The sensor was fabricated on a silicon substrate using semiconductor processing equipment. The area of the sensor was $1.56{\times}1.66mm^2$, and the width of the electrode and the gap between the electrodes were each $3{\mu}m$. The number of electrodes was 166, and the length of an electrode was 1.294 mm for the sensitivity of the sensor. The sensor was then packaged on a PCB for measurement. The sensor was inserted into a chamber environment with a temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ and connected to an LCR meter to measure the change in capacitance at relative humidity (RH) of 20% to 90%, 1 V, and 20 kHz. The results showed a sensitivity of 26fF/%RH, linearity of < ${\pm}2%RH$, and hysteresis of < ${\pm}2.5%RH$.

  • $TiO_2$ thin films are fabricated using R.F.sputtering method. $TiO_2$ thin films are coated on $Al_2O_3$ substrate printed IDE(interdigitated electrode). Impedance of thin films decreases according to increase relative humidity and it increases according to decrease measuring frequency. When substrate temperature is room temperature, impedance of thin films is from 45.68[MHz] to 37.76[MHz] within the limits from 30[%RH] to 75[%RH] at 1[kHz]. Whereas when substrate temperature is 100[$^{\circ}C$], impedance of thin films is from 692[kHz] to 539[kHz] within the limits from 30[%RH] to 75[%RH] at 1[kHz]. Impedance variation of thin films is bigger in low frequency regions than in high frequency regions. When substrate temperature is 100[$^{\circ}C$], impedance of thin films is lower than that of room temperature.

  • This work presents the design, fabrication and microwave performance of distributed analog phase shifter (DAPS) fabricated on $(Ba,\;Sr)TiO_3$ (BST) thin films for X-band applications. Ferroelectric BST thin films were deposited on MgO substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The DAPS consists of high impedance coplanar waveguide (CPW) and periodically loaded tunable BST interdigitated capacitors (IDC). In order to reduce the insertion loss of DAPS and to remove the alteration of unloaded CPW properties according to an applied dc bias voltage, BST layer under transmission lines were removed by photolithography and RF-ion milling. The measured results are in good agreement with the simulated results at the frequencies of interest. The measured differential phase shift based on BST thin films was $24^{\circ}$ and the insertion loss decreased from 1.1 dB to 0.7 dB with increasing the bias voltage from 0 to 40V at 10 GHz.

  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is often used to identify local stress/strain concentrations where a component is likely to fail. In order to reduce the degree of strain concentration, component thickness can be increased in those regions, or a stronger material can be used. In short fiber reinforced composite materials, strength and stiffness can be increased through proper fiber alignment. The field-aided microtailoring (FAiMTa) process is one promising method for doing this. FAiMTa uses principles of dielectrophoresis to preferentially align particles or fibers within a matrix. To achieve the preferred fiber orientation, an interdigitated electrode network must be integrated into the mold halves which can be fabricated by additive manufacturing (AM) processes. However, the process of determining the preferred fiber arrangements and electrode locations can be very challenging. This paper presents algorithms to semi-automate the interdigitated electrode design process. The algorithm has been implemented in the Solidworks CAD system and is demonstrated in this paper.

  • Recently, tremendous application utilizing electrospun nanofibers have been actively reported due to its several advantages, such as high surface to volume ratio, simple fabrication and high-throughput manufacturing. In this paper, we developed highly sensitive and consistent nanofiber humidity sensor by electrospinning. The humidity sensor was fabricated by rapid electrospinning (~2 sec) $TiO_2$/PVP/LiCl mixed solution on the micro-interdigitated electrode. In order to evaluate the humidity sensing performances, we measured current response using DC bias voltage under various relative humidity levels. The results show fast response / recovery time and marginal hysteresis as well as long-term stability. In addition, with the aid of micro-interdigitated electrode, we can reduce a total resistance of the sensor and increase the total reaction area of nanofibers across the electrodes resulting in high sensitivity and enhanced current level. Therefore, we expect that the electrospun nanofiber array for humidity sensor can be feasible and promising for diverse humidity sensing application.

  • Conventional methods for pathogen detection and identification are labor-intensive and take several days to complete. Recently developed biosensors have shown potential for the rapid detection of foodborne pathogens. In this study, an impedimetric biosensor was developed for rapid detection of Salmonella typhimurium. To develop the biosensor, an interdigitated microelectrode (IME) was fabricated by using semiconductor fabrication process. Anti-Salmonella antibodies were immobilized based on either avidin-biotin binding or self assembled monolayer (SAM) on the surface of the IME to form an active sensing layer. To evaluate effect of antibody immobilization methods on sensitivity of the sensor, detection limit of the biosensor was analyzed with Salmonella samples innoculated in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) or food extract. The impedimetric biosensor based on SAM immobilization method produced better detection limit. The biosensor could detect 107 CFU/mL of Salmonella in pork meat extract. This method may provide a simple, rapid, and sensitive method to detect foodborne pathogens.

  • Frequent outbreaks of foodborne illness have been increasing the awareness of food safety. Conventional methods for pathogen detection and identification are labor-intensive and take days to complete. Some immunological, rapid assays are developed, but these assays still require prolonged enrichment steps. Recently developed biosensors have shown potential for the rapid detection of foodborne pathogens. In this study, an impedimetric biosensor was developed for rapid detection of Salmonella entritidis in food sample. To develop the biosensor, an interdigitated microelectrode (IME) was fabricated by using a semiconductor fabrication process. Anti-Salmonella antibodies were immobilized based on neutravidin-biotin binding on the surface of the IME to form an active sensing layer. To evaluate the effect of electrode gap on sensitivity of the sensor, 3 types of sensors with different electrode gap sizes (2, 5, and $10{\mu}m$) were fabricated and tested. The impedimetric biosensor could detect $10^3\;CFU/mL$ of Salmonella in pork meat extract with an incubation time of 5 min. This method may provide a simple, rapid, and sensitive method to detect foodborne pathogens.

  • This paper presents the lateral displacement of a particle passing over a planar interdigitated electrode array at an angle as a function of particle size. The lateral displacement was also measured as a function of the angle between the electrode and the direction of flow. A simplified line charge model was used for numerical estimation of the lateral displacement of fluorescent polystyrene (PS) beads with three different diameters. Using the lateral displacement as a function of particle size, we developed a lateral dielectrophoretic (DEP) microseparator, which enables the continuous discrimination of particles by size. The experiment using an admixture of 3-, 5-, and $10-{\mu}m$ PS beads showed that the lateral DEP microseparator could continuously separate out 99.86% of the $3-{\mu}m$ beads, 98.82% of the $5-{\mu}m$ beads, and 99.69% of the $10-{\mu}m$ beads. The lateral DEP microseparator is thus a practical device for the simultaneous separation of particles according to size from a heterogeneous admixture.

  • Piezoelectric thick films of a soft $Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$ (PZT) based commercial material were produced by a conventional tape casting method. Thereafter, the interdigitated (IDT) Ag-Pd electrode pattern was printed on the $25{\mu}m$ thick piezoelectric film at room temperature. Co-firing of the 10-layer laminated piezoelectric thick films was conducted at $1,100^{\circ}C$ and $1,150^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, respectively. Piezoelectric cantilever energy harvesters were successfully fabricated using the IDT electrode pattern embedded piezoelectric laminates for 3-3 operation mode. Their energy harvesting characteristics were investigated with an excitation of 120 Hz and 1 g under various resistive loads (ranging from $10k{\Omega}$ to $200k{\Omega}$). A parabolic increase of voltage and a linear decrease of current were shown with an increase of resistive load for all the energy harvesters. In particular, a high output power of 3.64 mW at $100k{\Omega}$ was obtained from the energy harvester (sintered at $1,150^{\circ}C$).
