  • Volatile components of Korean horseradish roots harvested at different dates were prepared by steam distillation. Samples were examined by gas chromatography (GC) and combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The major pungent constituent, allyl isothiocyanate was confirmed add tended to increase with delayed harvest time. Pungent principles also included allyl thiocyanate, 2-phenethyl, 2-butyl, 4- pentenyl, benzyl and 3-methylthiopropyl isothiocyanates. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy study showed that allyl isothiocyanate - thiocyanate interconversion did not occur under the condition of this study.

  • Purpose: To explore differences in the subgingival microbiome according to the presence of periodontitis and/or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D), a metagenomic sequencing analysis of the subgingival microbiome was performed. Methods: Twelve participants were divided into 4 groups based on their health conditions (periodontitis, T2D, T2D complicated with periodontitis, and generally healthy). Subgingival plaque was collected for metagenomic sequencing, and gingival crevicular fluids were collected to analyze the concentrations of short-chain fatty acids. Results: The shifts in the subgingival flora from the healthy to periodontitis states were less prominent in T2D subjects than in subjects without T2D. The pentose and glucuronate interconversion, fructose and mannose metabolism, and galactose metabolism pathways were enriched in the periodontitis state, while the phosphotransferase system, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and peptidoglycan biosynthesis, bacterial secretion system, sulfur metabolism, and glycolysis pathways were enriched in the T2D state. Multiple genes whose expression was upregulated from the red and orange complex bacterial genomes were associated with bacterial biofilm formation and pathogenicity. The concentrations of propionic acid and butyric acid were significantly higher in subjects with periodontitis, with or without T2D, than in healthy subjects. Conclusions: T2D patients are more susceptible to the presence of periodontal pathogens and have a higher risk of developing periodontitis. The pentose and glucuronate interconversion, fructose and mannose metabolism, galactose metabolism, and glycolysis pathways may represent the potential microbial functional association between periodontitis and T2D, and butyric acid may play an important role in the interaction between these 2 diseases. The enrichment of the LPS and peptidoglycan biosynthesis, bacterial secretion system, and sulfur metabolism pathways may cause T2D patients to be more susceptible to periodontitis.

  • The interaction between adsorbed water and hydrogen on metallic surfaces is important for fundamental understanding of heterogeneous catalysis and electrode surface reactions in acidic environment. Here, we explore a long-standing question of whether hydronium ion can exist or not on a Pt surface coadsorbed with atomic hydrogen and water. Studies based on mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy show clear evidence that hydrogen atoms are converted into hydrated protons on a Pt(111) surface. The preferential structures of hydrated protons are identified as multiply hydrated $H_5O_2{^+}$ and $H_7O_3{^+}$ species rather than as hydronium ions. The multiply hydrated protons may be regarded as two dimensional zundel ($H_5O_2{^+}$) and Eigen cation ($H_7O_3{^+}$) in water-metal interface. These surface-bound hydrated protons may be key surface intermediates of the electrochemical interconversion between adsorbed hydrogen atoms and solvated protons.

  • We study the relaxation kinetics of reversible reactions of the type A + B $^\leftarrow_\rightarrow$ C + B by applying the manyparticle kernel theory, which we have developed to investigate many particle effects on general diffusioninfluenced reactions. It is shown that for the target model, where A and C molecules are immobile and their interconversion is induced by the encounter with the B molecules that are present in much excess, the manyparticle kernel theory gives a result that coincides with the known exact result.

  • DNA microarray with a set of 37 Corynebacterium glutamicum genes encoding enzymes for primary metabolism of glycolysis, TCA cycle and lysine biosynthesis, anaplerosis etc was constructed on slide glass in triplicate. With this DNA microarray, metabolic characteristics of the lysine-producing strain was analyzed during different phase of the cultivation. The major differences in using glucose as a carbon source instead of sucrose was found in the anaplerolytic enzymes, which control the interconversion of C3 and C4 metabolites. Also, the expression profile of these major enzymes was found to be quite distinct among different phases of growth.

  • This paper presents a method for conversion of muscular sense into both visual and auditory senses based on synesthetic perception. Muscular sense can be defined by rotation angles, direction changes and motion degrees of human body. Synesthetic interconversion can be made by learning, so that it can be possible to create intentional synesthetic phenomena. In this paper, the muscular sense was converted into both color and sound signals which comprise the great majority of synesthetic phenomena. The measurement of muscular sense was performed by using the AHRS(attitude heading reference system). Roll, yaw and pitch signals of the AHRS were converted into three basic elements of color as well as sound, respectively. The proposed method was finally applied to a wearable device, Samsung gear S, successfully.

  • Link-K message is the Tactical Data Link message standard developed by the Agency for Defense Development which is optimized for the Joint Operation of ROK Armed Force. KMTF message is the standard message format of Battle Management Information System. Interconversion and propagation between these messages are definitely needed to have efficient warfare such as situation data propagation using network, the convergence of collected situation data, common situational awareness, cooperative engagement. Therefore, this study suggests a way of rule and process for format conversion between Link-K and KMTF messages.

  • In order to investigate of the Influence of $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$ on ${\alpha}$-linolenic acid converted into the eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid(DHA) forming in plasma lipid and in liver microsomes of rabbit, the animals were fed on the perila oil rich ${\alpha}$-linolenic acid or sardine oil rich EPA and DBA diet for 4 weeks were examined. In plasma, liver lipid, $Mg^{2+}$ was influenced on arachidonic acid(AA), EPA, DHA formative from ${\alpha}$-linolenic acid in perilla oil, but stearic acid was increased, $Ca^{2+}$ was Influenced on stearic acid increased and DHA was decreased. In phospholipid, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$ was influenced on stearic acid increased and DHA was decreased in perilla oil.

  • The synthetic methodologies for the preparation of C-nucleosides are divided into four categories, and each category is discussed in details. The chemical rections which lead to other C-nucleosides from preformed the natural product pseudouridine are described first, followed by synthesis of C-nucleosides by condensation of pre-formed heterocyclic base with sugar, and by construction of heterocyclic base from a carbohydrate intermediate that bear functional carbon fragment at the anomeric position. Finally, methods of total synthesis of C-nucleosides from carbohydrate and achiral starting materials are presented.

  • This study derived the inter-conversion matrices, which can be used in heterogeneous image transcoding between the compressed images using different transforms, such as the $8{\times}8$ block discrete cosine transform (BDCT) and the one-level discrete wavelet transform (DWT). Basically, to obtain the one-level DWT coefficients from $8{\times}8$ BDCT, inverse BDCT should be performed followed by forward DWT, and vice versa. On the other hand, if the proposed interconversion approach is used, only one inter-conversion matrix multiplication makes the corresponding transcoding possible. Both theoretical and experimental analyses showed that the amount of computation of the proposed approach decreases over 20% when the inter-conversion matrices are used under specific conditions.
