  • The LiCo$O_2$ powder was synthesized by a solution phase reaction. This shows a high (003) peak intensity and low (104) or (101) peak intensities in X-ray diffraction spectra. The LiCo$O_2$/Li cell shows an initial discharge capacity of 102.9mAh/g and an average discharge potential or 3.877V at a current density of 50mA/g between 3.0~4.2V. The peaks of dQ/dV plot are associated with Li ion intercalation/deintercalation reaction. To evaluate the cycleability of an actual battery system, cylindrical lithium ion cell was manufactured using graphitized MPCF anode and LiCoO$_2$ cathode. After 100th cycle, this cel maintains 80% capacity of 10th cycle value. The LiCoO$_2$/MPCF cell has a high discharge voltage of 3.6~3.7V and a good cycle life performance on cycling between 4.2~2.7V.

  • The intercalated compounds of alkylsulfonate into hydrated and dehydrated zinc were synthesized. From the XRD, FT-IR, TGA, elemental analysis data, and the molecular size, the orientation of the intercalated alkylsulfonates was determined. For the hydrated compounds, alkylsulfonates were intercalated into hexaqua zinc layer with the bilayer structure of $32.9^{\circ}$ angle of inclination. For the dehydrated compounds, alkylsulfonates were directly bonded to zinc ion with the bilayer structure of $51.4^{\circ}$ angle of inclination.

  • This article investigated to polymer-clay nanocomposite, especially in interfacial respect clay structure, its dispersion into polymer matrix, and clay modification is studied. The cationic exchange of surfactants with clay gallery results in preparing organo-clay capable of compatiblizing to monomer or polymer and increasing interlayer adhesion energy due to expansion of interlayer spacing. The orientation of surfactant in clay gallery is affected by chemical structure and charge density of clay, and interlayer spacing and volume is increased with alkyl chain length of surfactant, or charge density of clay. Also, the interaction between clay and polymer in preparing polymer-clay nanocomposite is explained thermodynamically. In the future, the study and development of polymer-clay nanocomposite is paid attention to the interfacial adhesion, clay dispersion within polymer, mechanism of clay intercalation or exfoliation.

  • The dispersion of organoclay in ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) matrix was correlated with the rheological and swelling properties of nanocomposites. X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) analysis exhibited the disordered-intercalated structure of EPDM/organoclay nanocomposite. The extent of the disordered phase increased with increasing organoclay content up to a limiting value of 3 wt% after which equilibrium tended towards intercalation. The dispersion effect of organoclay in EPDM matrix was clarified by the physicochemical properties like rheological response and swelling thermodynamics in toluene. The increase in viscoelastic properties of EPDM nanocomposite with increasing organoclay content up to 3 wt%, followed by a subsequent decrease up to 4 wt%, was correlated in terms of the disordered and ordered states of the dispersed nano-clay sheets. Swelling measurements revealed that the change in entropy of the swelling increased with the increase in disorder level but decreased with the increase in intercalation level of organoclay in the disordered-intercalated nanocomposite. The increase in solvent uptake was comparable with the free volume in EPDM matrix upon inclusion of silicate particles, whereas the inhibition in solvent uptake for higher organoclay loading was described by bridging flocculation.

  • Polycarbonate(PC)/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were prepared by solution and melt mixing methods. A d-spacing of the nanocomposites was measured by an X-ray diffractometer. Neat montmorillonite (MMT-Na) and MMTs modified by dodecyl ammonium (MMT-DA) or dimethyl hydrogenated tallow 2-ethylhexyl ammonium (MMT-25A) were used. The d-spacing value of PC/MMT-25A and PC/MMT-DA was higher than that of PC/MMT-Na. The d-spacing increased from around 12 to $37AA$ depending on the mixing method. PC was more readily introduced to the gallery of MMT as the molecular weight of PC reduced and the mixing time increased. PC/MMT-25A showed higher thermal stability by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) than PC/MMT-DA and PC/MMT-Na.

  • It has been known that the intercalation of long alkyl chains in montmorillonites (MMT) increased the hydrophobicity as well as gallery spacing of UT, which has influenced on the exfoliation behavior of various polymers. A series of organophilic MMTs were synthesized from the water/isopropyl alcohol solution of MMT with ammonium salts of various alkyl amines. The properties of obtained MMTs such as thermal decomposition temperature, gallery spacing as well as hydrophobic property were investigated. The X-ray diffraction experiments on organophilic montmorillonite demonstrated that the increase of length of alkyl substituent resulted in increase in the spacing between silicate layers, which was ranged from 13.1 to 29.4 $\AA$. On the other hand, introduction of (di-, tri-) alkyl substituents in ammonium salts decreased water absorption of organophiplic montmorillonite to 2.7%.

  • The initial irreversible capacity, $Q_i$, is one of the parameters to express the material balancing of the cathode to anode. We introduced new terms, which are the initial intercalation Ah efficiency (IIE) and the initial irreversible specific capacity at the surface ($Q_{is}$), to express precisely the irreversibility of an electrode/electrolyte system. Two terms depended on kinds of active-materials and compositions of the electrode, but did not change with charging state. MPCF had the highest value of IIE and the lowest value of $Q_{is}$ in 1M $LiPE_6$/EC + DEC (1 : 1 volume ratio) electrolyte. IIE value of $LiCoO_2$ electrode was 97-98%, although the preparation condition of the material and the electrolyte were different. $Q_{is}$ value of $LiCoO_2$ was 0~1 mAh/g. MPCF-$LiCoO_2$ cell system had the lowest of the latent capacity. $Q_{is}$ value increased slightly by adding conductive material. IIE and $Q_{is}$ value varied with the electrolyte. By introducing PC to EC+DEC mixed solvent, IIE values were retained, but $Q_{is}$ increased. In case of addition of MP, IIE value increased and $Q_{is}$ value also increased a little.

  • This paper presents a study on the dispersion effect of the X-Ray diffraction, glass transition and DMA properties of organic modifier clay/epoxy nanocomposites produced in a homogenizer. Several experiments were conducted including different types of dispersion condition with varying processing conditions such as homogenizer rotor speed and applied time of homogenizer. The effects of these variables on the dispersion properties of nanocomposites were then studied. In order to fully understand the experimental results, a X-ray diffraction, DSC and DMA were used to investigate the effect of above mentioned variables on microstructure and intercalation/exfoliation of organic modifier clay/epoxy nanocomposites. The results from this work could be used to determine the best processing condition to obtain appropriate levels of d-spacing, glasss transition temperature and storage modulus in organic modifier clay/epoxy nanocomposites.

  • Metachromatic behavior of methylene blue (MB) in solutions of aqueous sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), chondroitin sulfate and L-${\alpha}$-lecithin vesicle at $18~52^{\circ}$C has been studied by absorption spectroscopy. MB was clustered in the matrix of the vesicle with high concentration of L-${\alpha}$-lecithin. The metachromasy of MB was found to be independent of phase transition temperature of vesicles. These results suggest that the dyes were aggregated on the hydrophilic surfaces of vesicle. In the vesicular system, the metachromatic effect of MB was dramatically decreased in the presence of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) than SDS. It is estimated that the intercalation site of these surfactants on vesicle surfaces was different, that is, the intercalation of CTAB was more effective than that of SDS.

  • We have investigated the influence of columnar defects (CD) on the vortex dynamics in pristine and iodine-intercalated Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+{\delta}} single crystals from do SQUID magnetization measurements. Especially, the temperature dependence of the irreversibility fields, H$_{irr}$(T), were studied. Anisotropy ratio ${\gamma}$, estimated from the fitting to the 2-dimensional melting model (A. Schilling et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 71 1899 (1993)) in higher fields than the matching field B$_{\phi}$ at low temperature region, turns out to be decreased by the iodine-intercalation and additionally by the heavy-ion irradiation.
