In the scalable extension of H.264/AVC, the codec is based on a layered approach to enable spatial scalability. In each layer, the basic concepts of motion compensated prediction and intra prediction are employed as in standard H.264/AVC. Additionally inter-layer prediction algorithm between successive spatial layers is applied to remove redundancy. In the inter-layer prediction, as the prediction we can use the signal that is the upsampled signal of the lower resolution layer. In this case, coding efficiency can be variable as the kinds of interpolation filter. In this paper, we investigate the approach to select the interpolation filter for residual signal in order to optimal prediction.
To achieve flexible visual content adaption for multimedia communications, the ISO/IEC MPEG & ITU-T VCEG form the JVT to develop SVC amendment for the H.264/AVC standard. JVT uses inter-layer prediction as well as inter prediction and intra prediction that are provided in H.264/AVC to remove the redundancy among layers. The main goal consists of designing inter-layer prediction tools that enable the usage of as much as possible base layer information to improve the rate-distortion efficiency of the enhancement layer. But inter layer prediction causes the computational complexity to be increased. In this paper, we proposed an efficient residual prediction. In order to reduce the computational complexity while maintaining the high coding efficiency. The proposed residual prediction uses modified interpolation that is defined in H.264/AVC SVC.

We propose an adaptive combination scheme of intra and inter prediction modes, where uni-directional intra prediction, bi-directional intra prediction, and inter prediction method are adaptively selected in an EMB (extended macro block). For each EMB, after all inter blocks have been encoded and decoded, the reconstructed blocks are used as reference data for bi-directional intra prediction of other blocks. Whereas conventional intra coding scheme does not use the right and below side pixels of the current block as reference data, the proposed method uses those for bi-directional intra prediction mode. In this paper, we propose three advanced techniques; (a) filter design for bi-directional prediction, (b) adaptive coding order scheme which increases the chance to use the bi-directional intra prediction mode, (c) modification of syntax to represent coding order. The information for the coding order is informed to the decoder by using the modified syntax structure without adding any additional flag. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme reduces the BD-Rate by 0.5%, on average, compared to KTA.

This paper proposed a fast algorithm to reduce the amount of calculation for inter prediction which takes a great deal of the operational time in H.264/AVC. This algorithm decides a search range according to the direction of predicted motion vector, and then performs an adaptive spiral search for the candidates with JM(Joint Model) FME(Fast Motion Estimation) which employs the rate-distortion optimization(RDO) method. Simultaneously, it decides a threshold cost value for each of the variable block sizes and performs the motion estimation for the variable search ranges with the threshold. These activities reduce the great amount of the complexity in inter prediction encoding. Experimental results by applying the proposed method .to various video sequences showed that the process time was decreased up to 80% comparing to the previous prediction methods. The degradation of video quality was only from 0.05dB to 0.19dB and the compression ratio decreased as small as 0.58% in average. Therefore, we are sure that the proposed method is an efficient method for the fast inter prediction.
A fast intra skip detection algorithm based on the ratedistortion (RD) cost for an inter frame (P-slices) is proposed for H.264/AVC video encoding. In the H.264/AVC coding standard, a robust rate-distortion optimization technique is used to select the best coding mode and reference frame for each macroblock (MB). There are three types of intra predictions according to profiles. These are $16{\times}16$ and $4{\times}4$ intra predictions for luminance and an $8{\times}8$ intra prediction for chroma. For the high profile, an $8{\times}8$ intra prediction has been added for luminance. The $4{\times}4$ prediction mode has 9 prediction directions with 4 directions for $16{\times}16$ and $8{\times}8$ luma, and $8{\times}8$ chrominance. In addition to the inter mode search procedure, an intra mode search causes a significant increase in the complexity and computational load for an inter frame. To reduce the computational load of the intra mode search at the inter frame, the RD costs of the neighborhood MBs for the current MB are used and we propose an adaptive thresholding scheme for the intra skip extraction. We verified the performance of the proposed scheme through comparative analysis of experimental results using joint model reference software. The overall encoding time was reduced up to 32% for the IPPP sequence type and 35% for the IBBPBBP sequence type.
In this paper, an adaptive spatio-temporal predictive coding based on the H.264 is proposed for 3D immersive media encoding, such as 3D image processing, 3DTV, and 3D videoconferencing. First, we propose a spatio-temporal predictive coding using the same view and inter-view images for the two TPPP, IBBP GOP (group of picture) structures 4hat are different from the conventional simulcast method. Second, an 2D inter-view direct mode for the efficient prediction is proposed when the proposed spatio-temporal prediction uses the IBBP structure. The 2D inter-view direct mode is applied when the temporal direct mode in B(hi-Predictive) picture of the H.264 refers to an inter-view image, since the current temporal direct mode in the H.264 standard could no: be applied to the inter-view image. The proposed method is compared to the conventional simulcast method in terms of PSNR (peak signal to noise ratio) for the various 3D test video sequences. The proposed method shows better PSNR results than the conventional simulcast mode.

This paper presents an efficient motion and disparity prediction method for multi-view video coding based on the high efficient video coding (HEVC) standard. The proposed method exploits inter-view candidates for effective prediction of the motion or disparity vector to be coded. The inter-view candidates include not only the motion vectors of adjacent views, but also global disparities across views. The motion vectors coded earlier in an adjacent view were found to be helpful in predicting the current motion vector to reduce the number of bits used in the motion vector information. In addition, the proposed disparity prediction using the global disparity method was found to be effective for interview predictions. A multi-view version based on HEVC was used to evaluate the proposed algorithm, and the proposed correspondence prediction method was implemented on a multi-view platform based on HEVC. The proposed algorithm yielded a coding gain of approximately 2.9% in a high efficiency configuration random access mode.

This paper proposes inter-level causal reasoning to implement synergistic approach. We decompose KOSPI prediction model into economy and industry level. Two kinds of intra-level QCOM are combined in inter-level QCOM via Inter-level relations. Downward reasoning is achieved by propagating the disturbance in the higher level to lower level while upward reasoning is to analyze the reverse cases.
A HEVC-compatible 3D video coding method (3D-HEVC) has been recently developed as an extension of the high efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard. In order to efficiently deal with the multi-view video plus depth (MVD) format, 3D-HEVC exploits an inter-component prediction which allows the prediction between texture and depth map images in addition to a temporal prediction used in the conventional single layer video coding such as H.264/AVC and HEVC. The performance of the inter-component prediction is normally affected by the accuracy of the disparity vector, and thus it is important to have an accurate disparity vector used for the inter-component prediction. This paper, therefore, introduces a disparity derivation method and inter-component algorithms using the disparity vector for the efficient 3D video coding. Simulation results show that the 3D-HEVC provides higher coding performance compared with the simulcast approach using HEVC and the simple multi-view extension (MH-HEVC).

This paper proposes a fast encoding algorithm of H.264/AVC multi-view video coding. The amount of data to be encoded for a multi-view video is much more than normal video's data, and the amount of information to be predicted is enormous because of the multi-view video coding uses inter-disparity prediction in addition to inter-motion prediction in conventional video coding. We noticed through an experiment that the efficiency of prediction is getting better in order of intra, inter-disparity, inter-motion, and inter-skip, and proposes a early termination algorithm by means of estimate the adaptive threshold within a GOP unit. In the experiments, the proposed algorithm shows improved processing speed about 32% compared to existing method, and increased amount of bits and distortions are relatively disregardable.
