  • Lumostatic operation for cultivation of Haematococcus pluvialis was assessed to test the scale-up strategy of photobioreactors. Lumostatic operation is a method of maintaining a proper light condition based on the specific light uptake rate ($q_e$), by cells. Lumostatic operations were performed in 0.4-, 2-, 10-, and 30-1 scale bubble column photobioreactors and the results were compared with cultures illuminated with constant light intensity. Significant differences were observed in the maximal cell concentrations obtained from 0.4-, 2-, 10-, and 30-1 scale photobioreactors under constant light intensity, yielding the maximal cell concentrations of $2.8{\times}10^5$, $2.2\times10^5$, $1.5\times10^5$, and $1.1\times10^5$ cells/ml, respectively. The maximal cell concentration in a 0.4-1 photobioreactor under lumostatic operation was $4.3\times10^5$ cells/ml. Furthermore, those in 2-, 10-, and 30-1 scale photobioreactors were about the same as that in the 0.4-1 photobioreactor. The results suggest that lumostatic operation with proper $q_e$ is a good strategy for increasing the cell growth of Haematococcus pluvialis compared with a constant supply of light energy. Therefore, lumostatic operation is not only an efficient way to achieve high cell density cultures with minimal power consumption in microalgal cultures but it is also a perfect parameter for the scale-up of photobioreactors.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the present conditions of illumination techniques in dental clinics in order to contribute improvement of operating environment. This study also aimed exploring qualitative and quantitative luminous intensity required for color temperature in dental clinic illumination, which was a critical part of esthetic dentistry. Materials and methods: A total of forty-eight local dental clinics were selected for sampling a) luminous intensity, and b) color temperature. The author measured the luminous intensity and the color temperature with lux meter and color meter respectively between 12pm and 2pm. The dental unit chair placed in the general operation positions were kept the distance 60 cm then all dental units were measured three times and averaged. The author measured the luminous intensity and color temperature with both common dental operating light and then without operating light in different office environments. The study was conducted under three conditions: 1 artificial illumination in clear day light 2. artificial illumination in cloudy day light, and 3. artificial illumination alone. Results : The results obtained were as follows. 1. The average luminous intensity in dental clinic lighting was 425 lux which was not sufficient to produce the optimal shade of the patient's teeth. Furthermore, the average luminous intensity even in full operating lighting was 9532 lux which fell short of the required level of 10,000 lux. 2. The average color temperature of all dental clinics surveyed was 5169 K which met the optimal range. However, only 33.3% fell in the correct region between 5,000-5,500 K as 25% were over 5,500 K and 41.6% were below 5,000 K. As a result, 66.7% were under insufficient color temperature conditions. 3. The dental unit chair placed next to a window, hence exposure to natural lighting, had significantly higher luminous intensity and color temperature compared to the dental unit chair which didn't have a window or natural lighting. 4. The data analysis revealed that only 6.3% of the dental clinic were met the standard of the average luminous intensity and color temperature.

  • The light-transmission technique has been applied to a slit rheometer for measuring red blood cell aggregation as well as blood viscosity over a range of shear rates. For measurement of blood viscosity and aggregation, instantaneous pressure and transmit-light intensity are measured with time. Using a precision pressure measurement, one can determine the shear stress and shear rate. In addition, a transmitted light through a blood sample indicates degree of RBC aggregation. With abruptly flowing with high shear rate, RBCs rapidly disaggregate and the intensity of the transmitted light becomes low. When continuously flowing with decreasing shear rate, RBCs tend to re-aggregate and the corresponding transmit-intensity gradually increases with time. The light intensity as a degree of RBC aggregation is plotted against shear rate and compared with blood viscosity. The advantages of this design are dual measurement at a time, simplicity, i.e., ease of operation and no moving parts, low cost, short operating time, and the disposable kit which is contacted with blood sample.

  • Characteristics of an active pixel switch readout circuit were studied by SPICE simulation. A simple readout circuit consists of an operation amplifier, a diode, and a down-counter was suggested, and its successful operation was verified by showing that the differences in the detected signal intensity are accordingly converted to modulation of the voltage pulses generated by the comparator. A scheme to use these pulses to generate the original image was also put forward.

  • A new method of driving the PDP(Plasma Display Panel) was proposed and its characteristics were investigated. Applying high frequency non-discharge pulses to an auxiliary anode resulted an increased region of stable operation, decreased delay time and increased light intensity. It is suggested that PDP with DPM (Double Pulse Memory) drive technique improves the delay time, luminance, region of stable operation and luminous efficacy compared to PDP with PPM(Planar Pulse Memory) drive technique developed by NHK Lab. in Japan.

  • Background and Objectives : Clinically, as a tool for voice assessment before and after the operation or the voice treatment, acoustic analysis is widely used. However, in clinical situations, acoustic parameters vary according to how the assessment is made. Thus, with voice disease patients as subjects, we are to investigate what influence intensity increase exerts on acoustic parameters and how to reduce variation according to the way of assessing. Material and Method : At the voice clinic of the department of otorhinolaryngology in Gangnam Severance Hospital, with 30 female voice-disease patients (40.6 years old on the average) and 23 male voice-disease patients (40.1 years old on the average) as subjects, using the Dr Speech vocal-assessment program, we statistically tested the significance of the difference in each of acoustic parameters between when the "Ah" vowel is produced with a normal voice and when the "Ah" vowel is produced with a loud voice. Results : Acoustic parameters that showed a statistically significant difference according to intensity increase were Jitter, SD F0, and NNE for females, and Jitter, SD F0, HNR, SNR, and NNE for males. Voice quality estimates showed a statistically significant difference according to intensity increase in female hoarse voice, female breathy voice, and male breathy voice. Conclusion : In this research, acoustic analysis, which is generally used for voice assessment before and after the operation or the voice treatment, showed a tendency that acoustic parameters became better under the influence of intensity increase except for the cases where a voice disease was severe. Thus, to raise the reliability of voice assessment, the range of intensity needs to be set up. This should be the topic for the future research.

  • Amines, ammonia or 3-methoxypropylamine (MPA), are used to maintain the optimized pH for the prevention of corrosion in the secondary side of Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs). They are differently dissociated as a function of temperature which is not same in each location of the water-steam cycle. pH at the operation temperature depends on temperature of fluid and equilibrium constants of water and amines. Thus, every amine provides the different pH in the entire secondary side so that pH is not only the sufficient parameter in corrosion control. The secondary parameter, i.e., buffer intensity, is the ability to maintain a stable pH when $H^+$ are added or removed due to the ingress of impurities or the reaction of corrosion. The buffer intensity is necessary to provide the selection criteria for the best pH control agent for secondary side and the basic understanding of the reason why the flow-accelerated corrosion(FAC) rate may demonstrate the bell-shape curve over temperature. The buffer intensities of ammonia and MPA were reviewed over the entire operation temperature of PWRs. The sufficient buffer intensity is provided for the inhibition of corrosion by ammonia in low temperature $(25{\sim}100^{\circ}C)$ and by DMA in high temperature $(150{\sim}250^{\circ}C)$. In terms of buffer intensity, i) the best pH control agent is an amine with $pK_a(T)$ range of pH(T)- $1{\leq}pK_a(T){\leq}pH(T)$ + 0.5 and ii) the amine solution should have sufficient buffer intensity, ${\beta}$ to inhibit corrosion, and iii) FAC rate may be maximum at the temperature, where ${\beta}_B/{\beta}$ ratio is lowest.
