  • Robinson with ${coworkers}^{1}$ have introduced two-state outer-neighbor bonding model to explain the anomalies of water. The studies on the properties of water as a function of temperature and pressure revealed that, unlike other ideas, all $H_2O$ molecules in liquid are tetrabonded. On the average they are forming two different bonding types. One type is the regular tetrahedral water-water bonding similar to that found in the ordinary ice Ih, whereas the other is a more dense nonregular tetrahedral bonding similar to that appearing in the ice II. The transformation between these two bonding forms is evidenced by FT-NIR experiment. The FT-NIR measurements were done for liquid water in the temperature range from $20^{\circ}C$ up to $80^{\circ}C$ in a wide extent of frequencies: 12 000 - 4000 $cm^{-1}$ /. Temperature dependent variations in the volume fraction of these two structures are directly related to the spectral changes. The absorbance variations are explored by means of the two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS), principal component analysis (PCA), curve fitting and second derivatives. The presence of the isosbestic points in a range of the combination and overtone transitions indicates that the experimental spectra are a superposition of two temperature independent components. One component of diminishing intensity with temperature increase, is assigned to a stronger hydrogen bonds occurred in the Ih type, whereas the second component showing an opposite behavior, one can attribute to a weaker H-bonds characteristic for the II type. The understanding of the hydrogen bonding network in the liquid water is very important in interpretation of the interaction between water and protein chain. The two-state model of water surrounding the protein surface could advance an understanding of the hydration process.

  • DLC films were deposited using the ECR-PECVD method with the fixed deposition condition, such as ECR power, methane and hydrogen gas-flow rates and deposition time, for various substrate bias voltage. We have investigated the ion bombardment effect induced by the substrate bias voltage on films during the deposition of film. The characteristic of the films were analyzed using the FTIR, Raman, and UV/Vis spectroscopy analysis shows that the amount of dehydrogenation in films was increased with the increase of substrate bias voltage and films thickness was decreased. Raman scattering analysis shows that integrated intensity ratio(ID/IG) of the D and G peak was increased as the substrate bias voltage increased and films hardness was increased. Optical transmittances of DLC film were decreased with increasing deposition time and substrate bias voltage. From these results, it can be concluded that films deposited at this experimental have the enhanced characteristics of DLC because of the ion bombardment effect on films during the deposition of film.

  • We have measured nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear absorption coefficient of optical materials by using a far-field phase modulation technique. The phase variation of the probe beam in the nonlinear material is transformed into the spatial phase modulation in the far-field so that the spatial distribution of the optical intensity in conjunction with the computer simulation analysis can give the nonlinear optical constants. We have obtained the nonlinear refractive indices and nonlinear absorption coefficient of $CS_2$ and $BaF_2$ by fitting the experimental values and numerical simulation analysis of far-field measurements. The nonlinear refractive indices of $CS_2$ and $BaF_2$were obtained as $1.2{\times}10^{-11}$ esu and $1.0{\times}10^{-13}$ esu, respectively at 616 nm, and the nonlinear absorption coefficient of BaF$_2$as $5.0{\times}10^{-11}$cm/W at 308nm. These measured values were in good agreement with previous reports.

  • Spectral phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction (SPIDER) was fabricated and used to characterize pulses from a Ti:sapphire oscillator. In the SPIDER apparatus, two replicas of the input pulse were generated with a time delay of 200 fs and were upconverted by use of sum-frequency generation with a strongly chirped pulse using a 8-cm-long SFIO glass block at a 30-11m-thick type II BBO (p-BaBz04) crystal. The resulting interferogram was recorded with a UV-enhanced CCD array in the spectrometer. The spectral phase was retrieved by SPIDER algorithm in combination with independently measured pulse spectrum and the corresponding temporal intensity profile was reconstructed with a duration of 19 fs. As an independent cross-check of the accuracy of the method, we compared the interferometric autocorrelation (lAC) signal calculated from the SPIDER data with a separately measured lAC. The conventional, but unjustified, method of fitting a sechz pulse to the autocorrelation deceivingly yielded a pulse duration of 15 fs. This systematic underestimation of the pulse duration affirms the need for a complete characterization method. From the consideration in this paper, we concluded that the SPIDER could provide an accurate characterization of femtosecond pulses. ulses.

  • Objective: This study was performed to compare the perception of pain between patients treated with passive self-ligating fixed appliances and those treated with Invisalign aligners. Methods: This prospective study conducted in Saudi Arabia used an estimated sample of 64 patients from a private dental clinic. After obtaining written informed consent, the patients were divided into two groups; one group (n = 32) was treated using passive self-ligating fixed appliances and the other group (n = 32) using $Invisalign^{(R)}$ aligners. Immediately after fitting the appliances, the patients' perception of pain was evaluated through a close-ended and coded self-administrated questionnaire by using a visual analog scale (VAS). Their responses were recorded at 4 hours, 24 hours, day 3, and day 7. Mann-Whitney U-test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Pearson's chi-square test were performed for statistical analysis. Results: A lower percentage of patients treated with Invisalign aligners reported pain than did patients treated with passive self-ligating fixed appliances, and these differences were statistically significant (p = 0.001). Similarly, the mean VAS score for the Invisalign group was significantly lower than that for the passive self-ligating fixed appliance group at different intervals during the first week of treatment. The intensity of pain with both appliances peaked at 24 hours (mean VAS score, 3.87) and was lowest (mean VAS score, 1.62) on day 7. Conclusions: During the first week of orthodontic treatment, patients treated with Invisalign aligners reported lower pain than did those treated with passive self-ligating fixed appliances.

  • Lane detection is one of the key parts among autonomous vehicle technologies because lane keeping and path planning are based on lane detection. Camera is used for lane detection but there are severe limitations such as narrow field of view and effect of illumination. On the other hands, Lidar sensor has the merits of having large field of view and being little influenced by illumination because it uses intensity information. Existing researches that use methods such as Hough transform, histogram hardly handle multiple lanes in the co-occuring situation of lanes and road marking. In this paper, we propose a method based on RANSAC and regularization which provides a stable and precise detection result in the co-occuring situation of lanes and road marking in highway scenarios. This is performed by precise lane point extraction using circular model RANSAC and regularization aided least square fitting. Through quantitative evaluation, we verify that the proposed algorithm is capable of multi lane detection with high accuracy in real-time on our own acquired road data.

  • Tunnel management is a time-consuming and expensive task. In particular, visual analysis of tunnel inspection often requires extended time and cost and shows problems on data gathering, storage and analysis. This study proposes a new approach to extract information for tunnel management by using a laser scanning technology. A prototype tunnel laser scanner developed was used to obtain point clouds of a railway tunnel surface. Initial processing of laser scanning data was to separate those laser pulses returned from the installations attached to tunnel liner using radiometric and geometric characteristics of laser returns. Once the laser returns from the installations were separated and removed, physically damaged parts on tunnel lining are detected. Based on the plane formed by laser scanner data, damaged parts are detected by analysis of proximity. The algorithms presented in this study successfully detect the physically damaged parts which can be verified by the digital photography of the corresponding location on the tunnel surface.

  • DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) films were deposited by ECR-PECVD (electron cyclotron resonance plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition) method with the variation of substrate bias voltage under the others are constant except it. We have investigated the ion bombardment effect induced by the substrate bias voltage on films during the deposition of film. The characteristics of the film were analyzed using the Dektak surface profiler, SEM, FTIR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and Nano Indentation tester. FTIR spectroscopy analysis shows that the amount of dehydrogenation in films was increased with the increase of substrate bias voltage and films thickness was decreased. Raman scattering analysis shows that integrated intensity ratio $(I_D /I_G)$ of the D and G peak was increased as the substrate bias voltage increased, and films hardness was increased. From these results, it can be concluded that films deposited at this experimental have the enhanced characteristics of DLC because of the ion bombardment effect on films during the deposition of film.

  • Hydrogenated amorphous carbon films were deposited by ERC-PECVD with deposition conditions, such as ECR power, gas composition of methane and hydrogen, deposition time, and substrate bias voltage. The characteristics of the film were analyzed using the AES, ERDA, FTIR. Raman spectroscopy and micro hardness tester. From the results of AES and ERDA, the elements in the deposited film were confirmed as carbon and hydrogen atoms. FTIR spectroscopy analysis shows that the atomic bonding structure of a-C:H film consisted of sp³and sp²bonding, most of which is composed of sp³bonding. The structure of the a-C:H films changed from CH₃bonding to CH₂or CH bonding as deposition time increased. We also found that the amount of dehydrogenation in a-C:H films was increased as the bias voltage increased. Raman scattering analysis shows that integrated intensity ratio (I/sub D//I/sub G/) of the D and G peak was increased as the substrate bias voltage increased, and films hardness was increased.

  • ZnO nanorods were grown on Au-coated Si substrates by vapor phase transport (VPT) at the growth temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ using a mixture of zinc oxide and graphite powders as source material. Au thin films with the thickness of 5 nm were deposited by ion sputtering. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) was carried out to investigate the optical properties of the ZnO nanorods. Five peaks at 3.363, 3.327, 3.296, 3.228, and 3.143 eV, corresponding to the free exciton (FX), neutral donor bound exciton ($D^{\circ}X$), first order longitudinal optical phonon replica of free exciton (FX-1LO), FX-2LO, and FX-3LO emissions, were obtained at low-temperature (10 K). The intensity of these peaks decreased and their position was red shifted with the increase in the temperature. The FX emission peak energy of the ZnO nanorods exhibited an anomalous behavior (red-blue-red shift) with the increase in temperature. This is also known as an "S-shaped" emission shift. The thermal activation energy for the exciton with increasing temperature in the ZnO nanorods is found to be about 26.6 meV; the values of Varshni's empirical equation fitting parameters are = $5{\times}10^{-4}eV/K$, ${\beta}=350K$, and $E_g(0)=3.364eV$.
