  • Borderline resectable pancreatic cancer, an intermediate stage between a completely resectable state and an unresectable state, requires a multidisciplinary treatment approach. This study aimed to elucidate the main characteristics and recent research trends regarding borderline resectable pancreatic cancer to gain further insights into them. Data from published papers about borderline resectable pancreatic cancer were collected from Web of Science (2014-2023) for the analysis. This study included 355 papers; data on major countries, publishing organizations, and keywords were collected and analyzed. Furthermore, R studio and VOSviewer were used for the qualitative and quantitative analyses of keywords. Publication of papers on borderline resectable pancreatic cancer was observed to be increasing annually by 12.8%, with the United States and Japan being the main publishing countries. In 2014, keywords related to surgery and chemotherapy were dominant; however, a shift toward more integrative approaches, such as neoadjuvant therapy, was observed over time. This study demonstrates rapidly evolving trends and paradigm changes in the research and management of borderline resectable pancreatic cancer. Thus, the results of this study are expected to contribute to establishing future research strategies and improving patient treatment outcomes.

  • Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers are top priorities for cancer control in Korea. In terms of epidemiological, population-health and economic burden, GI cancers such as stomach, liver and colorectal cancers have been top four cancers in the nation during the past decade and this trend is likely to continue in the near future. In order to reduce the great burden of GI cancer in Korea, the nation might need the following strategies: (1) to put more focus on primary prevention on infection/diet and related research; (2) to improve screening rates for colorectal and stomach cancers, and conduct more cost-effectiveness analysis of these screening programs, e.g., Fecal Occult Blood Test vs. colonoscopy; (3) to establish a more consistent and integrative cost-effectiveness analysis system for new cancer treatments and anticancer drugs; and (4) to place more emphasis on hospice and other palliative care of GI cancer, as well as on the etiology, staging and treatment of pancreas cancer with its poor survival rate.

  • The incidence rate of cervical cancer in Korea is still higher than in other developed countries, notwithstanding the national mass screening program. Cervical cancer prognosis is good due to an effective treatment such as surgery or radiation therapy, concurrent chemotherapy in the early stage. However, it is still a poor prognosis when advanced stage or recurrent. Some studies said that combined oriental and western medicine can improve the survival, quality of life, immune function, and decrease side effects in cervical cancer. In the western medical part, clinical practice guideline was published in 2006, 2007 and 2010 in Korea. In China, oriental medicine clinical practice guideline have been published in 2014. But there is no Korean medicine clinical practice guideline. This study will introduce the methods of diagnosis and the medical therapeutics which is commonly utilized for cervical cancer in Korea, and existing Korean medicine clinical practice guideline for Disease Analysis and Treatment (辨證論治). This study will be a meaningful study to establish clinical practice guidelines of Korean Medicine for cervical cancer.

  • Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Standard treatment such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery have many limitations in the treatment of this disease. Therefore, new molecular-targeted therapies needed and being developed. Patients with advanced NSCLC have a short life expentancy; therefore, in addition to increasing their survival, improving their quality of life (QoL) is also an important treatment goal. In this case report, we introduce NSCLC patient treated with Allergen Removed Rhus Verniciflua Stokes(aRVS). In this case, survival time incresed as traditional korean medicine using aRVS. And the general condition of the patient became better. Further case study will be needed in order to determine the effects of aRVS on NSCLC.

  • The prevalence of breast cancer is very high in Korea. Although the patients receive standard treatments, such as surgery, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy, they frequently experience recurrence or metastasis of their tumors. In addition, many patients with breast cancer also suffer from side effect symptoms induced by these standard treatments. Therefore, increasing numbers of patients now want to undergo treatment with traditional Korean medicine (TKM) in addition to conventional treatment. We present a case of 46-year-old female with recurred breast cancer. She first received two kinds of chemotherapy and then underwent surgery. She then also received 4 cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy. At a follow-up examination, she was informed of recurrent lesions on the right anterior chest wall. She started to receive TKM treatments together with a new chemotherapy. After about one month, the size of the recurred tumor in right chest wall had decreased. Her symptoms, such as shoulder pain, chest pain, and nausea induced by conventional therapy, were also improved. We suggest that a combination of TKM and chemotherapy is a promising treatment for breast cancer.

  • Background: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) tends to grow more rapidly and spread much faster than non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). A concurrent combination of chemotherapy and thoracic radiotherapy is suggested as the standard conventional treatment, but it is more challenging for elderly patients having pulmonary and cardiovascular comorbidities. Case presentation: Here we present a case of an 80-year-old male, current smoker diagnosed with SCLC in limited stage T3N0M0 (36mm right upper lobe, satellite nodule) in Dec, 2015. The standard concurrent chemoradiotherapy was not available for his comorbidities, which included chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and angina pectoris. Furthermore, he and his family refused the recommended chemotherapy or radiotherapy exclusively. Alternatively, he received various non-conventional treatments including local radiofrequency hyperthermia, mistletoe, and Traditional Korean medicine including acupuncture, moxibustion and herbs since Jan. 2016. Despite the progression in primary tumor size, there have been no other distant relapse so far, and the patient has been in stable condition ever since. Conclusion: We suggest that a combination of various alternative treatments could be a candidate for elderly patients intolerable to conventional cytotoxic treatments.

Therefore, patients seeking treatment with traditional Korean medicine (TKM) in addition to conventional treatment have increased. We present a case of 46-year-old female with recurring breast cancer. She underwent surgeries and various hormone therapies since being diagnosed in 2007. Upon follow-up examination, she had metastatic lesions on the lung and multiple bones in 2015 and 2016. She received TKM treatments from May 2017 with Aromasin and Afinitor. However, hepatic metastasis was found after two months, so she started Capecitabine with TKM. After about two months, the liver nodules disappeared and a seeding nodule in the right paracolic gutter was decreased. After two months, the tumor response was stable disease. Back pain due to bone metastasis was improved. We suggest that combination treatment of TKM and chemotherapy is a promising method for treating breast cancer.

  • Purpose : Recently, cancer has become a chronic disease that requires supervision because of early diagnosis and the development of therapeutic technology. As a result, cancer patients are interested in improving the quality of their lives besides the treatment of cancer itself. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a qualitative research to understand the vivid experiences of cancer patients and structure their treatment experience. Among qualitative researches, grounded theory is developed based on the data collected in the field. The grounded theory research method is easy to analyze for the process and structure of the treatment experience. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide basic data on the integrated medical experience of cancer patients Methods : Participants were conveniently selected, and the criteria for selection were for those who had more than 1 month of hospitalization so that they could dictate their situation and experience in a meaningful manner. Data was collected through in-depth interviews and continued until the data were saturated through theoretical sensitivity and continuous comparison methods. The collected data were analyzed through the process of open-coding, axial coding, and selection coding, which are the research methods of grounded theory. Results : Cancer patients differ in their path, purpose, and attitudes depending on their respective situations and the internal and external resources of individuals. There is also a difference in the perception of their situation among the cancer patients and their families. Cancer patients were shown to recognize and cope with problems in the integrated medical treatment process, and have been classified into 6 different types after the results. Cancer patients showed positive changes in terms of physical, emotional, and lifestyle after their integrated medical treatment. Cancer patients perceived the integrated medical treatment process as a horizontal relationship structure and with diversity. Conclusions : The experience of integrated medical treatment of cancer patients is a process of rehabilitation that heals the body and restores life within the interaction of support system, contextual situation, and internal resources of the individual. Despite this, there is a need not only for the efforts of integrated medical service providers but also institutional support in the future with regards to the current weaknesses and points for improvement. In addition, there is a need for an objective criterion to measure the outcome of integrated medicine for the standardization of integrated medical services.
