  • An efficient Gauss-Seidel time integration scheme is developed for solving the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations on unstructured meshes. Roe's FDS is used for the explicit residual computations and van Leer's FVS for evaluating implicit flux Jacobian. To reduce the memory requirement to a minimum level, off-diagonal flux Jacobian contributions are repeatedly calculated during the Gauss-Seidel sub-iteration process. Computational results based on the present scheme show that approximately $15\%$ of CPU time reduction is achieved while maintaining the memory requirement level to $50-60\%$ of the original Gauss-Seidel scheme.

  • FCM(Fuzzy Cognitive Map) is proposed for representing causal reasoning. Its structure allows systematic causal reasoning through a forward inference. By using the FCM, authors have proposed FCM-based fault diagnostic algorithm. However, it can offer multiple interpretations for a single fault. In process engineering, as experience accumulated, some form of quantitative process knowledge is available. If this information can be integrated into the FCM-based fault diagnosis, the diagnostic resolution can be further improved. The purpose of this paper is to propose an enhanced FCM-based fault diagnostic scheme. Firstly, the membership function of fuzzy set theory is used to integrate quantitative knowledge into the FCM-based diagnostic scheme. Secondly, modified TAM recall procedure is proposed. Considering that the integration of quantitative knowledge into FCM-based diagnosis requires a great deal of engineering efforts, thirdly, an automated procedure for fusing the quantitative knowledge into FCM-based diagnosis is proposed by utilizing self-learning feature of neural network. Finally, the proposed diagnostic scheme has been tested by simulation on the two-tank system.

  • From the Boltzmann equation with BGK approximation, a gas-kinetic BGK scheme is developed and methods for its efficient calculation, using the convergence acceleration techniques, are presented in a framework of an implicit time integration. The characteristics of the original gas-kinetic BGK scheme are improved in order for the accurate calculation of viscous and heat convection problems by considering Osher's linear subpath solutions and Prandtl number correction. Present scheme applied to various numerical tests reveals a high level of accuracy and robustness and shows advantages over flux vector splittings and Riemann solver approaches from Euler equations.

  • An implicit viscous turbulent flow solver is developed for two-dimensional geometries on unstructured triangular meshes. The flux terms are discretized based on a cell-centered finite-volume formulation with the Roe's flux-difference splitting. The solution is advanced in time using an implicit backward-Euler time-stepping scheme. At each time step, the linear system of equations is approximately solved with the Gauss-Seidel relaxation scheme. The effect of turbulence effects is approximated with a standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ two-equation model which is solved separately from the mean flow equations using the same backward-Euler time integration scheme. The triangular meshes are generated using an advancing-front/layer technique. Validations are made for flows over the NACA0012 airfoil and the Douglas 3-element airfoil. Good agreements are obtained between the numerical results and the experiment.

  • The dynamic response analysis for large structures using finite element method requires a large amount of computational resources. This paper presents an efficient vibration analysis procedure by combining node-based substructuring reduction method with a response analysis scheme for structures with undamped, proportional or nonproportional damping. The iterative form of substructuring reduction scheme is derived to reduce the full eigenproblem and to calculate the dynamic responses. In calculating the time response, direct integration scheme is used because it can be applied directly to the reduced model. Especially for the non proportional damping matrix, the transformation matrices defined in the displacement space are used to reduce the system. The efficiency and the effectiveness of the present method are demonstrated through the numerical examples.

  • Cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverters are currently used because it enables the integration of various sources, such as batteries, ultracapacitors, photovoltaic array and fuel cells in a single system. Conventional modulation schemes for multilevel inverters have concentrated mainly on the generation of a low harmonic output voltage, which results in less effective utilization of connected sources. Less effective utilization leads to a difference in the charging/discharging of sources, causing unsteady voltages over a long period of operation and a reduction in the lifetime of the sources. Hence, a charge balance control scheme has to be incorporated along with the modulation scheme to overcome these issues. In this paper, a new approach for charge balancing in symmetric cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter that enables almost 100% charge balancing of sources is presented. The proposed method achieves charge balancing without any additional stages or complex circuit or considerable computational requirement. The validity of the proposed method is verified through simulation and experiments.

  • Although many methodologies exist for determining the constrained equations of motion, most of these methods depend on numerical approaches such as the Lagrange multiplier's method expressed in differential/algebraic systems. In 1992, Udwadia and Kalaba proposed explicit equations of motion for constrained systems based on Gauss's principle and elementary linear algebra without any multipliers or complicated intermediate processes. The generalized inverse method was the first work to present explicit equations of motion for constrained systems. However, numerical integration results of the equation of motion gradually veer away from the constraint equations with time. Thus, an objective of this study is to provide a numerical integration scheme, which modifies the generalized inverse method to reduce the errors. The modified equations of motion for constrained systems include the position constraints of index 3 systems and their first derivatives with respect to time in addition to their second derivatives with respect to time. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated by numerical examples.

  • A unified numerical method for computing the quadrature weights, integration matrix, and differentiation matrix is newly developed in this study. For this purpose, a spline-like interpolation using piecewise continuous polynomials is converted into a global spline interpolation formula, with which the quadrature formulas can be derived from integration and differentiation of the transformed function in an exact manner. To prove the usefulness of the suggested approach, both the Lagrange and tension spline interpolations are represented in exactly the same form as global spline interpolation. The applicability of the proposed method on arbitrary nodes is illustrated using two different sets of nodes. A series of validations using three test functions is conducted to show the flexibility in selecting computational nodes with the present method.

  • Numerical simulation of blade forming is carried out as stretch forming by an elasto-plastic finite element method. The method adopts a Lagrangian formulation, which incorporates large deformation and rotation, with a penalty method to treat the contact boundary condition. Numerical integration is done with a directional reduced integration scheme to avoid shear locking. The numerical results demonstrates various final shapes of blades which depend on the variation of the stretching force. The strain distributions in deformed blades are also obtained with the variation of the stretching force.

  • Features of geological lineaments generally play an important role at the data interpretation concerned geological processes, mineral exploration or natural hazard risk estimation. However, there are intrinsically discordances between lineaments-related features extracted from surficial geological syrvey and those from satellite imagery;nevertheless, any data set contained those information should not be considred as less meaningful within their own task. For the purpose of effective utilization task of extracted lineaments, the mathematical scheme, based on fuzzy set theory, for practical integration of various types of rasterized data sets is studied. As a real application, the geological map named Homyeong sheet(1:50,000) and the Landset TM imageries covering same area were used, and then lineaments-related data sets such as lineaments on the geological map, lineaments extracted from a false-color image composite satellite, and major drainage pattern were utilized. For data fusion process, fuzzy membership functions of pixel values in each data set were experimentally assigned by percentile, and then fuzzy algebraic sum operator was tested. As a result, integrated lineaments by this well-known operator are regarded as newly-generated reasonable ones. Conclusively, it was thought that the implementation within available GISs, or the stand-alone module for general applications of this simple scheme can be utilized as an effective scheme can be utilized as an effective scheme for further studies for spatial integration task for providing decision-supporting information, or as a kind of spatial reasoning scheme.
