  • This paper presents the thermal behavior of a synchronous linear motor with high speed and force. Such a linear motor can successfully replace ball lead screw in machine tools because it has a high velocity, acceleration and good positioning accuracy. On the other hand, low efficiency and high heating up during operation are disadvantage of linear motors. For the application of linear motors to machine tools a water-cooling system is often used. In this research, structure of the linear motor and water cooler is changed to improve the thermal behavior of the linear motor. Some important effects of an integrated cooler, an U-cooler and a thermally symmetrical cooler are presented.

  • A sorption cooler, which utilizes helium-4 as a working fluid, was previously developed and tested in KAIST. The cooler consists of a sorption pump and a thermosyphon. The developed sorption cooler aims to pre-cool a certain amount of the magnetic refrigerant of an adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (ADR) from 4.5 K to 2.5 K. To simulate the high heat capacitance of the magnetic refrigerant, liquid helium was utilized not only as a refrigerant for the sorption cooling but also as a thermal capacitor. The previous experiment, however, showed that the lowest temperature of 2.7 K which was slightly higher than the target temperature (2.5 K) was achieved due to the radiation heat leak. This excessive heat leak would not occur when the sorption cooler is completely integrated with the ADR. Thus, based on the experimentally obtained pumping speed, the prediction model for the sorption cooler is developed in this study. The presented model in this paper assumes the sorption cooler is integrated with the ADR and the heat leak is negligible. The model predicts the amount of the liquid helium and the required time for the sorption cooling process. Furthermore, it is confirmed that the performance of the sorption cooler is enhanced by reducing the volume of the thermosiphon. The detailed results and discussions are summarized.

  • A double-heterostructure mesa-stripe-geometry laser diode integrated with thermoelectric Peltier cooler has been designed and fabricated. Epi-layers have been grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition(MOCVD) method. Peltier cooling effect has been measured for devices with a mesa width of 14$\mu$m and a cavity length of 380$\mu$m. The effects of thermoelectric cooling could be shown by measuring the optical output of the laser with the increase of the current in the thermoelectric cooler. While the input courrent of the laser was maintained at 250mA, the optical output was decreased from 4.8mW to 3.8mW due to heating, but with the thermoelectric cooler on the optical output power was recovered by more than 40%. The results show that the complicated cooling device is not needed since the cooling can be achevied by the developement of the fabrication processing.

  • Cold start driving cycles exhibit an increases in friction losses due to the low temperatures of metal components and media compared to the normal operating engine conditions. These friction losses are adversely affected to fuel economy. Therefore, in recent years, various techniques for the improvement of fuel economy at cold start driving cycles have been introduced. The main techniques are the upward control of coolant temperature and the fast warm-up techniques. In particular, the fast warm-up techniques are implemented with the coolant flow-controlled water pump and the WHRS (waste heat recovery system). This paper deals with an effect of fast ATF (automatic transmission fluid) warm-up on fuel economy using a recovery system of EGR gas waste heat in a diesel engine. On a conventional diesel engine, two ATF coolers have been connected in series, i.e., an air-cooled ATF cooler is placed in front of the condenser of air conditioning system and a water-cooled one is embedded into the radiator header. However, the new system consists of only a water-cooled heat exchanger that has been changed into the integrated structure with an EGR cooler to have the engine coolant directly from the EGR cooler. The ATF cooler becomes the ATF warmer and cooler, i.e., it plays a role of an ATF warmer if the temperature of ATF is lower than that of coolant, and plays a role of an ATF cooler otherwise. Chassis dynamometer experiments demonstrated the fuel economy improvement of over 2.5% with rapid increase in the ATF temperature.

  • The syngas produced from coal gasification is cooled down for gas cleaning by a syngas cooler that produces steam. Due to the presence of fly slag in the syngas, erosion, slagging and corrosion especially in the upper part of the syngas cooler may cause major operational problems. This study investigates the flow, heat transfer and particle behaviors in the syngas cooler of a 300MWe IGCC plant by using computational fluid dynamics. For various operational loads and geometry, the gas and particle flows directly impinged on the wall opposite to the syngas inlet, which may lead to erosion of the membrane wall. In the evaporate channels inside the syngas cololr, the particle flows were concentrated more on the outer channel where slagging becomes more serious. The heat transfer to the wall was mainly by convection which was larger on the side wall below the inlet level.

  • Linear motors can drive a linear motion without intermediate gears, screws or crank shafts. Linear motors can successfully replace ball lead screw in machine tools because they have a high velocity, acceleration and good positioning accuracy. On the other hand, linear motors emit large amounts of heat and have low efficiency. In this paper, the thermal behavior of a synchronous linear motor with high velocity and force is analyzed. To improve the thermal characteristics of the linear motor, structure of linear motor and cooler is changed. Some effects of an integrated cooler, an U-cooler and a thermal symmetrical cooler are presented.

  • This paper deals with optimum PI controller design using genetic algorithm to improve control performance and robustness for an oil cooler system. The optimum PI gain was found to minimize an object function, integrated absolute error, and to satisfy control design specifications such as overshoot and settling time based on practical transfer function of the oil cooler system. The control performance and robustness were investigated by comparing indicial responses and Bode diagram analysis with respect to three kinds of PI gains obtained from different gain decision manners. Moreover, the robustness against to input disturbances, sinusoidal wave form and abrupt single pulse, was evaluated. The computer simulation results showed that the suggested optimum gain can establish desirable control performance and strong robustness with easy design process.

  • This paper presents some measures far the optimization of the thermal behavior of linear motors, which are used as a high speed feed mechanism in machine tools. Thermo-Sandwich-Construction using two cooling circuits and an insulation layer shows an effective cooling system for linear motors. Conducting sheet can be also used to reduce heat flow from linear motor to machine table. Cooling pipe is a simple and effective cooling system for the secondary part of synchronous linear motor. Through the combination of the Thermo-Sandwich-Construction, conducting sheet and cooling pipe the thermally optimized linear motor shows a well improved thermal behavior in comparison with the prototype motor.

  • Global air traffic is forecast to grow at an average annual rate of around 5% in the next 20 years. The continuous growth of air traffic and raised environmental awareness put increasing pressure on aero engine manufacturers to reduce fuel burn and emissions. NEWAC are a new integrated program of the European Union with focus on innovative core engine concepts to achieve this problem. In this paper, Within NEWAC, active core engine configurations will be investigated. the investigation is focused on the optimal design of the CAC heat exchanger for active core. For optimal design of he CAC heat exchanger, the HTFS of basic design of heat exchanger are analyzed so as to proceed an optimization routines based on Response Surface Method(RSM) and Design of Experiment(DOE). As a result, CAC heat exchanger optimized by 1.0314 lb/s mass flow rate and 3.9058 mm TP of tube layout and 206.8181 mm height of heat exchanger and 918 tube number for heat transfer and pressure drop. We confirm the design optimization using RSM and DOE is useful on complex structure of heat exchanger.

  • In this study, a $CO_2$ air-conditioning system was investigated with different types of electrically driven compressors, parallel flow type gas cooler, four-pass type evaporator, internal heat exchanger integrated with accumulator, and electric expansion valve. The experimental study was conducted under various operating conditions (ie., different rotational compressor speeds, air inlet temperatures and air velocity coming into heat exchangers). The experimental results showed the cooling capacity was 3.5kW at $35^{\circ}C$ ambient temperature when the vehicle was idle (ie., the worst condition for cooling off the gas cooler). In terms of performance effect of the compressor, the e-RP model had a slightly better cooling capacity and coefficient of performance than the e-GR model under the same test conditions. An experimental equation for optimum cooling-performance control was also suggested based on the results. A high-pressure control algorithm for the super critical cycle was determined to achieve both maximum cooling performance and efficient energy consumption. The results from the experimental equation coincided with those of previous experimental studies.
