  • Recently, the efforts to improve fuel economy and to reduce pollutant emission have become the main subject in the development of a gasoline engine. A lean combustion engine admitted as the best alternative is relatively lower fuel consumption rate and exhaust emissions. In this study, it is focused on intensifying intake flow field as one of methods to improve the performance of the lean combustion. First, three different types of suitable swirl control valve(SC7) with high swirl and tumble ratio are selected through steady flow experiment, being installed in a spark ignition engine. The relationship between lean misfire limit and torque was investigated with injection timing and spark ignition timing. Also, the effect of intensified swirl new on the combustion Stability and exhaust emissions was experimently examined by the measuring in-cylinder pressure and combustion variation. The results show that the engine with swirl control calve is superior to other conventional engine on the lean misfire limit, specific torque, combustion variation and emission, and the appropriate injection timing and spark ignition timing exist according to the type of swirl control valve.

  • This experimental study was mainly investigated on the swirl flow characteristics in the cylinder generated by a helical intake port. LDA system was used for the measurement of in-cylinder velocity fields. Tangential and axial velocity profiles, with varying valve lifts, valve eccentricity ratios and axial distance, were measured. When the intake valve was set in the cylinder center, we could find that in-cylinder swirl flow fields were composed of a forced vortex motion and a free vortex motion in the vicinity of the cylinder center and the cylinder wall respectively. In case of valve eccentricity ratio, N$_{y}$ = 0.45, the vortex flow which rotates to the opposite direction of a main rotating flow in the cylinder was found. And the reverse flow toward the cylinder head surface was also found in axial velocity profile and it showed the tendency of the linear decrease in the region of 0.leq.Y/B.leq.1.2.2.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of the gas flow in the engine cylinder under various intake flow conditins. The particle tracking velovimetry(PTV) was used to anlayze the gas flow pattern and flow field in the cylinder. Effects of tumble intensifying valve(TIV), swirl intensifying valve(SIV) and one-valve deactivated condition on in-cylinder flow patterns were compared with the baseline engine udner 600rpm motoring condition. In addtion, tumbel ration was estimated rwith results of in -cylinder flow fields. Base on experimental results, the tumble ration of in-cylinder flow field has the maximum value at the bottom dead center for the different four inlet conditions. In TIV condition, the tumble ration is 1.35 times larger than that of baseline engine and 1 intake valve deactivated condition is effective to improve in-cylinder swirl motion.

  • In this study, the variations of swirl center according to evaluating position have been investigated in a steady flow bench of SI engine. For the experiments, two engine heads with different intake valve angles ($11^{\circ}$ and $26^{\circ}$) were tested in the flow bench by varying the evaluating position (1.75~6.0B) and valve lift (2~10 mm). Particle image velocimetry was used to measure the velocity field inside the engine cylinder. The swirl center position is found with a critical point theory and the intensity of turbulence is calculated from PIV velocity data. The results show that the center of swirl is located closer to the center of cylinder and turbulence intensity is lower, when the intake valve angle is the smaller. It is conventional to evaluate the swirl ratio at 1.75B position in the steady flow bench of SI engine. At this position, however, the distance of swirl center from the cylinder center scatters significantly for the variation of valve lift, and the turbulence intensity is much stronger regardless of the valve angle. Thus, to estimate the flow at the end of compression stroke in a real engine from the data in the steady flow experiments, the evaluation position should be moved further downstream more than 4.5B.

  • A multidimensional simulation of turbulent flow and combustion with swirl in the cylinder of SI engine is implemented to clarify the effects of swirl. present simulation employs the ICED-ALE numerical technique, the skew-upwind difference scheme, a modified k_.epsilon. turbulence model, a combustion model of Arrhenius type and turbulence-mixing-control type. First, the calculations for swirling flow in an axisymmetric cylinder are carried out. The results are compared with the experimental data to validate the numerical analysis. Second, the calculations for intake, compression and combustion processes in an axisymmetric cylinder are performed. The effects of swirl on turbulent flow and combustion are examined through the parametric study of swirl number 0.0, 0.6, 1.2 and 2.4. As a result, it is numerically shown that the turbulent kinetic energy and the swirl velocity, which are produced during the intake process, affect the combustion process.

  • The performance improvement and emission reduction in a turbocharged D.I. diesel engine was studied experimentally in this paper. The system of intake port, fuel injection and turbochager are very important factors which have influence on the engine performance and exhaust emission because the properties in the injected fuel depend on the combustion characteristics. Through these experiments it can be expected to meet performance and emission by optimizing the main parameters; the swirl ratio of intake port, fuel injection system and turbocharger. The swirl ratio of intake port was modified by hand-working and measured by impulse swirl meter. Through this steady flow test, we knew that the increase of swirl ratio is decreasing the mean flow coefficient, whereas the gulf factor is increasing. And the optimum results of engine performance and emission are as follows; the swirl ratio is 2.43, injection timing is BTDC 13。 CA, compression ratio is 16, combustion bowl is re-entrant 5$^{\circ}$, nozzle hole diameter is $\Phi$0.28*6, turbocharger is GT40 model which are compressor A/R 0.58 AND turbine A/R 1.19.

  • Recently, HSDI (High Speed Direct Injection) diesel engine has been spotlighted as a next generation engine because it has a good potential for high thermal efficiency and fuel economy. This study was carried out to investigate the in-cylinder flow characteristics generated in a 4-valve small diesel cylinder head with a tangential and helical intake port. The flow characteristics such as coefficient of flow rate(Cf), swirl ratio (Rs), and mass flow rate (ms) were measured in the steady flow test rig using the impulse swirl meter and the analysis of in-cylinder flow field was conducted by experiment using the PIV and calculation using the commercial CFD code. As the results from steady flow test indicate, the mass flow rate of the cylinder head with a short distance between the two intake ports is increased over 13% than that of the other head. However, the non-dimensional swirl ratio is decreased approximately 15%. From in-cylinder flow characteristics obtained by PIV and CFD calculation, we found that the swirl center was eccentric from the cylinder center and the velocity distribution became uniform near the TDC. In addition, the results of the calculation are good agreement with the experimental results.

  • The in-cylinder flow field of gasoline engine comprises unsteady compressible turbulent flows caused by the intake port, combustion chamber geometry and the change of the spatial shape. Thus the quantitative analysis of the in-cylinder bulk flow plays an important role in the improvement of engine performances and the reduction of exhaust emission. The influences of tumble intensifying valve (TIV) and swirl intensifying valve (SIV), and various intake-flow conditions are compared with the tumble ratio obtained by the measured results of the in-cylinder gas flow. In order to obtain the quantitative analysis of the in-cylinder gas flows of gasoline engine this investigation applied the particle tracking method to the analysis of gas flow characteristics. Various intake conditions such as tumble and swirl intensifying valve, the deactivated condition of one valve among two intake valves, and the other factors of gas flow are considered.
