  • The exact partial discharge pulse should be measured in order to estimate the discharge source in the solid insulation and diagnose the degree of deterioration. Partial discharges generated in the insulation occur in the internal voids or at the edge of the insulation, have unique characteristics following the type and location. When external voltage is applied, Partial discharges occurred in the restrictively presented voids increase the quantity of electrical charge at the discharge onset voltage. The discharge characteristics have remained constant as space is filled by the impurity such as a compound of gases accompanied with discharge. In this study, How to design the insulation about the problems of the built-in diagnostics in the transformer is discussed by the interpretation of electric field.

  • The monitoring and assessment on the insulation condition of generator stator windings have been an important task of utility companies. The interest for the assessment of insulation condition has been increasing due to the need to keep old generating equipment reliable in order to extend the equipment life and to increase the generating capacity. Even though many developments and research activities for the condition assessment of generator insulation have been performed for decades, the assessment criterion in order to consistently predict the actual insulation condition is still in question. In this paper, the correlation between the parameters and the insulation condition is analyzed through the various non-destructive diagnostic tests in order to establish the assessment criterion on insulation deterioration of generator stator windings. By analyzing the correlation, PDI(Partial Discharge Index) as a novel parameter for the assessment criterion on insulation diagnosis of stator winding is proposed and verified.

  • The Polarization and Depolarization Current (PDC) measurement is an efficient and effective diagnostic technique based on time domain measurement, for evaluating the high voltage insulation condition. This paper presents a review and comparison results from several published papers on the application of the PDC method to finding the conductivity and moisture content of various types of insulators. For solid insulation, the study was focused on cable insulation, electric machine stator insulation, and paper insulator in transformer insulation with different conditions. For liquid insulation, the review and comparison was done on biodegradable and mineral transformer oils, with fresh oil condition, and aged condition. The results from previous researchers tests were complied, analyzed and discussed, to evaluate the application of the PDC method to monitor the conductivity and moisture of HV equipment insulation systems. From the review results, the PDC technique successfully gives an indication of the conductivity and moisture level of high voltage insulation.

  • This test was performed to assess the insulation condition of the stator winding of 3.45kV hydro generator in insulation deterioration condition which was due to long service period(30years) since installed We extracted 12 stator wingdings from the hydro generator core, cut the stator windings into three parts(Middle winding part, slot winding part, end wingding part), and evaluated the insulation condition to know the deterioration condition of each parts. This insulation diagnostic tests include AC current, dissipation factor, and partial discharg test.

  • In recent years, it is strongly required to supply high quality electrical power without insulation failure in distribution power cables. Therefore the exact measurement and judgment ar out deterioration degree of cables are essential to increase that supplying reliability. This paper will introduce various diagnostic methods of off-line and live-line cables also propose the judgement criteria and newly trend of diagnostic technique at present.

  • We have done the insulation diagnostic test of generators in domestic five power plants since 1987 and tested A.C. current increasing rate($\Delta$I), $\Delta$tan$\delta$ and partial discharge in generator winding insulation. This study is described the correlation between nondestructive result(A.C. current increasing rate, $\Delta$tan$\delta$ and partial discharge) and lapse of time in generators.

  • Several off-line diagnostic tests which include the insulation resistance(IR), polarization index(PI), low-voltage AC, and recurrent surge oscillograph(RSO) tests were performed to assess the condition of generator rotor windings. The low-voltage AC and the RSO tests were performed on the gas turbine generator rotor winding to detect shorted turns. Before intentionally applying artificial shorted faults, it was confirmed by the low voltage AC and the RSO tests that the winding was in sound condition. For simulated shorted rotor winding turns, the RSO test detected the fault in the winding. The RSO test was capable of identifying the number and pole location of the shorted turns for a number of simulated shorted coils.

  • Insulation breakdown of water-cooled generator stator windings occurs frequently due to leakage of cooling water and absorption into the insulation material. Leakage and absorption problems of water-cooled stator windings are often found during regular preventive maintenance. To evaluate cooling water leakage and absorption, diagnostic tests were performed on two water-cooled turbine generators, which have been in service for 13 and 17 years, respectively. The test results of the measured electrical properties such as dissipation factor($tan{\delta}$), capacitance and AC leakage current for water-cooled generator stator windings with wet bars are reported in this paper.

  • This paper dealt with the measurement and analysis of electromagnetic waves generated by partial discharges in insulation oil to develop insulation diagnostic techniques for power transformer. Two types of narrow-band monopole antennas with the resonant frequency of 500 MHz and 1 GHz were designed and fabricated. We simulated defects which consist of a needle electrode with curvature radius of 10 ${\mu}m$ and a plane electrode with diameter of 60 mm in insulation oil. From the experiment, the maximum output voltage of the fabricated antennas was measured; 620 $mV_{max}$ for 500 MHz resonant frequency and 920 $mV_{max}$ for 1 GHz resonant frequency.

  • The various degradation phenomena, such as the evolution of gases, tan e, moisture content and total acid number in insulation oils of power transformer have been measured and analyzed as a function of aging temperatures and periods. The insulation oils have been degraded at laboratory in the period of 17, 34, and 72 days. We have also extracted the insulation oils from the working power transformers. The dissolved gases (such as CO, CO2, H2, CH4 C2H2---), tane, moisture content and total acid number in laboratory samples and field samples have been measured and characterized. It has been found that gases increase with degradation temperature and tane increases with total acid number while the moisture content does not increase with tane.
