  • COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) is a geostationary satellite and has been developing by KARI for communication, ocean observation and meteorological observation. Conventional thermal control design, using MLI (Multi Layer Insulation), OSR (Optical Solar Reflector), heater and heat pipe, is utilized. Ka-band components are installed on South wall, while other equipment for sensors are installed on the opposite side, North wall. High dissipating communication units are located on external (surface) heat pipe and are covered by internal insulation blankets to decouple them from the rest of the satellite. External satellite walls are covered by MLI or OSR for insulation from space and for rejection internal heat to space. The ocean and meteorological sensors are installed on optical benches on the top floor to decouple thermally from the satellite. Single solar array wing is adopted in order to secure clear field of view of radiant cooler of IR meteorological sensor. This paper presents principles of thermal control design for the COMS.

  • KEPCO is now promoting the new project of upgrading its highest system voltage from 345kV to 765kV. The main reason of this project is an insurance of bulk power transmission from power complexes at coast to power demand center at Kyoung-In area. The new system needs a careful approach to basic design to secure its reliability and to reduce the increase of investment cost. So, We introduced the basic philosophy of insulation design in spring meeting of this transaction. This paper, after preceding paper, deals with the insulation design example for 765kV transmission lines.

식물성절연유를 사용한 친환경 주상변압기 설계를 위한 절연파괴 특성 (Breakdown Properties for Insulation Design of the Environment-Friendly Pole Transformer using the Vegetable Insulating Oil)

  • In recent years, environmental concerns have been raised on the use of poorly biodegradable fluids in electrical apparatus in regions where spills from leaks and equipment failure could contaminate the surroundings. The newly invented vegetable insulating oil is highly biodegradable and have negligible impact on the environment, human health and the ecosystem. For development of the environmental-friendly pole transformer using vegetable insulating oil, the dielectric constructions of the pole transformer were discussed in this paper. Depending on the dielectric constructions, the AC breakdown characteristics of the Nomex insulating papers and the vegetable insulating oil were studied by simulated electrode systems. Based on the experimental results, the maximum design stress($E_{max}$) for insulation design of the environmental-friendly pole transformer were suggested.

  • This paper presents experimental data from model windings with different arrangement of coil in order to provide information to design a 22.9kV class HTS transformer. Before experiment, the composite insulation of two different type of HTS transformers are investigated. The first basic of investigation is a breakdown characteristic of liquid nitrogen and flashover characteristic on the GFRP surface under ac and impulse, The second investigation is insulation design, manufacture and test of model windings. These include a AC withstand voltage test of 50 kV rms and a lighting impulse test of 150 kV at peak.

  • Insulation aging diagnosis system provides early warning regarding electrical equipment defect. Early warning is very important in that it can avoid great losses resulting from unexpected shutdown of the production line. Since relations of insulation aging and partial discharge dynamics are non-linear, it is very difficult to provide early warning in an electrical equipment. In this paper, we propose the design method of insulation aging diagnosis system that use a magnetic wave and acoustic signal to diagnoses an electrical equipment. Proposed system measures the partial discharge on-line from DAS(Data Acquisition System) and acquires 2D patterns from analyzing it. For filtering the noise contained in sensor signals we used ICA algorithms. Using this data, design of the neuro-fuzzy model that diagnoses an electrical equipment is investigated. Validity of the new method is asserted by numerical simulation.

  • The double-walled steel vessel with powder insulation in the space between the walls is used to minimize heat transfer by radiation and conduction in cryogenic storage tank. The vacuum required the insulation is much less extreme than with high-vacuum or multilayer insulations. The solid supports are used to bear the weight of the inner container. Thermal and structural analysis of the tank have been carried out to study the effect of vacuum and weldment geometry of the internal supports. Heat flux in wall is increased with increasing of thermal conductivity of perlite. Heat flux and stress of support is not affected by weldment geometry.

  • The sound insulation performance of walls and floors for air-borne and structure-borne sounds in an apartment building is an important environmental factor which should be contemplated at the intial design stage for their thorough control. Recent increasing residents' demands for quality living spaces strongly urge the development of more accurate and efficient measurement and evaluation methods for the control of air-borne and structure-borne sound insulation. However, steel-structured apartment buildings, recently emerged as new building structures in the market, have not been thoroughly examined. The present work carried out an extensive survey for steel-structured apartment buildings, in an attempt to provide useful design data, and their sound insulation performances were compared with those of R.C. apartment buildings.

  • The manufacturing technology of XLPE power cable ( e.g. gas curing, triple common extrusion, clean room, super-clean compound, etc.) had been developed in 1960's and the design parameter of insulation thickness for EHV XLPE power cable at present was determined in 1960's. But, the quality of XLPE power cable has been improved up to now. The re-evaluation of design parameter for insulation thickness reductions is required and so we performed weibull plotting test using model cable. This paper describes the evaluation details of the insulation characteristics according to weibull plotting test.

  • In this study, a rational procedures for estimation of insulation thickness of a vertical wall for condensation control or personnel protection has been investigated. Design parameters are height of the wall, thermal conductivity, emissivity, and operating temperatures. The results indicated that the surface emissivity plays a very important role in the design of insulation for the purpose of surface temperature control, especially in natural convection situation. radiation heat transfer coefficients for some new insulation material surface, such as elastomers, estimated to be more than 90% of the total surface heat transfer coefficient.

Mechanical Properties of PPLP Material at Cryogenic Temperature

  • In power cables as one of the important power applications adopting HTS tapes, a good insulation should be kept at its optimum performance. As an insulation material for superconducting device applications, polypropylene laminated paper (PPLP) is now widely used instead of the conventional Kraft paper. In addition to its dielectric property, the insulation material should also possess superior mechanical property at cryogenic temperatures and operability that is necessary for the insulation winding process. This study aims to evaluate the mechanical property of the PPLP material at ambient and cryogenic temperatures. At cryogenic temperature, the failure stress of PPLP increased significantly as compared with that at ambient temperature. The failure stress at both temperatures depended upon the sample orientation to the load application.
