  • Purpose: This study was done to examine the relation of self-reported adult attachment style, perceived parental rearing styles and anger in undergraduate students. Method: The six hundred and fifty undergraduate students participating in this descriptive correlational design study were conveniently sampled from K University and S College located in Seoul, Korea. The instruments were Spielberger's state-trait anger expression inventory - Korean version(Chon, Han, Lee & Spielberger, 1997), the instrument for measuring attachment styles by Hazen and Shaver (1987), and Hong's instrument for measuring parental rearing style(2001). Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, $X^2-test$, ANOVA, and cluster analysis using pc-SAS(version 8.0e) program. Results: The mean scores for trait anger and anger-in were higher in undergraduate students with insecure and ambivalent attachment style compared to students with a secure attachment style. The mean score for anger-control was highest in undergraduate students with a secure attachment style. The parental rearing styles by cluster analysis were grouped as Neglect, Permissive, Democratic, and Protective-control. The mean scores for trait anger, anger-in, and anger-out were higher in undergraduate students with 'Neglect' parental rearing style than in those with 'Democratic' and 'Protective-control' rearing styles. Conclusion: Trait anger and anger expression might be related to an attachment style and/or a parental rearing style.

  • The purpose of this research is to empirically validate the IIPS (Interior Image Preference Scale) which is a newly developed visual instrument for evaluating the environmental disposition inherent to individuals especially one's interior image preferences. The questionnaire survey was used. The data were collected from Oct. 10th 1997 to Nov. 14th 1997. The subjects were 399 undergraduate students and 30 professor of Dep. of Interior Design. With respect to content validity and construct validity of IIPS discrimination and similarity structure of scales and characteristics of 12 prototype interior images were examined in comparison with the originals. 429 questionnaires were analyzed using frequency percentage mean and Multi-Dimensional Scales. The major results were as follows (1) All 80 items of IIPS were discriminated by 3 criteria such as Traditionalism·Modernity(TM) Masculinity·Femininty (MF) and Simplicity·Complexity (SC) as expected at the time of the instrument development stage.(2) 12 prototype interior images of the IIPS showed tendency to be accord with descriptors to express them in comparison with the originals (3) All 90 items of IIPS showed a cluster distribution according to the similarity structure of scales. Three subscales of IIPS(e . g. TM MF and SC) were structured pretty well by those 3 dimensions. This research revealed the IIPS to have content validity and construct validity for evaluating of preference of three properties of interior image in empirical research. The IIPS was found to be potential objective tool to measure the interior image preferences.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore clusters of married woman based on family differentiation and family rules originating from their family of origin, and to examine family strength according to clusters. The research instrument comprised of a questionnaire completed by 269 married women that investigated family differentiation and family rules based on family origins, and the comparative strength of their nuclear family. Analysis of subgroups was based on four representative categories differentiating family rule patterns. Cluster analysis demonstrated that the higher family differentiation level and lower-mid family rules level were related to greater family strength. As a subgroup, lowest levels of family strength were associated with lower family differentiation and lower family rules in all clusters. Findings supported the efficacy of a typological approach for investigation of experiences of married women based on family origin.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to develop visual complexity metrics based on theoretical bases. Background: With the development of IT technologies, drivers process a large amount of information caused by automotive human-machine interface (HMI), such as a cluster, a head-up display, and a center-fascia. In other words, these systems are becoming more complex and dynamic than traditional driving systems. Especially, these changes can lead to the increase of visual demands. Thus, a concept and tool is required to evaluate the complicated systems. Method: We reviewed prior studies in order to analyze the visual complexity. Based on complexity studies and human perceptual characteristics, the dimensions characterizing the visual complexity were determined and defined. Results: Based on a framework and complexity dimensions, a set of metrics for quantifying the visual complexity was developed. Conclusion: We suggest metrics in terms of perceived visual complexity that can evaluate the in-vehicle displays. Application: This study can provide the theoretical bases in order to evaluate complicated systems. In addition, it can quantitatively measure the visual complexity of In-vehicle information system and be helpful to design in terms of preventing risks, such as human error and distraction.

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate depression prevalence and related factors of depression in Jeju Province. Methods: The study sample selected using randomized cluster sampling method, and the unit of cluster was 25 households. Data were collected from 1275 adults in 723 households through home visit interview. The response rate was 89.4%. The instrument used for measuring depression was CES-D, the cut-off score was 21. Data were analyzed using Chi-square test and logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of depression in Jeju was 18.1%. The significant differences were found with depression prevalence rate by the group of gender, age, inhabited area, marital status, educational status, monthly household income, life satisfaction, socioeconomic status, perceived health status, morbidity during last 2 weeks, perceived stress, perceived fatigue, participation in social activities, and family life satisfaction. The most predictive factors among those variables were perceived fatigue with 17.93 of odds ratio, family life satisfaction with 9.86 odds ratio, and perceived stress with 9.66 of odds ratio. Conclusion: The prevention and management of depression program development was suggested and mental health promotion program for the prevention of depression was suggested.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the attitude of housewives towards the elderly people. Three hundred and eighty-one housewives were selected, and a set of questionnaire was used to collect data. The Instrument for this study consisted of 20 item semantic differential format. The results are as follows: Housewives hold a slightly negative attitude towards the old. The main reasons for that were significantly different according to their educational level, religion, economic level, and marital satisfaction. By using a cluster analysis, the housewives could be divided into four groups. Among them, a group with positive attitudes towards the old had an experience living with parents. Based on the results of this study, it is revealed that the data on the attitudes of housewives towards the elderly will offer valuable information in developing education programs to change their negative attitudes.

  • This study was done to describe health behavior and determine affecting factors in Korean adults, based on the Health Behavior Assessment tool. The subjects were sample of 298 adults from five cities. The instrument for this study were Health Behavior Assessment tool (30 items, 4 scale). Frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOVA, cluster analysis with SPSS program were used to analyze the data. The results of the study are as follows ; 1) The average item score for health behavior was 2.56, the highest score on the subscale was limitation of liking(M=3.16), followed by stress management (M=2.98), nutrition(M=2.82), energy conservation (M=2.67). 2) A significant difference between age, sex, perception of health, and health behavior were found. 3) Pattern of health behavior among Korean adults focused on stress management in order to obtain emotional stability, and balance and harmony in dietary life, and energy conservation. Patterns of health behavior in Korean adults is unique in each individual. Therefore nursing intervention skill for health promotion have to be developed based on the health behavior in each individual.

  • Recently there has been increase in need for high precision and high speed machining due to economic and environmental reasons. It is a very important issue that determines the optimal preload that is to be applied to bearings in order to satisfy the performance required in bearings according to its operation conditions. This study introduces a variable preload device that can automatically adjust the preload applied in a machine tool spindle using centrifugal force as opposed in existing rubber instrument. In this study, the deformation of the rubber device by the centrifugal force is analyzed and it is discussed that the proposed device can be worked properly through changes of the collar density.
