Reflection and Future Directions: ISD from the Perspective of Intercultural Communication

  • This study purports to contribute in deepening our understanding of ISD (instructional systems design/development) from Edward Hall's concept of intercultural communication. Renowned anthropologist Edward Hall introduced three concepts of cultural differences: time, space, and context. This paper explores how theses cultural dimensions - time, space and context- are reflected in ISD and compares the cultural differences between the east and the west that emerge in the process of applying ISD.

  • The purpose of this study is the construction and internal validation of DT ISD model that incorporates Design Thinking process into Instructional Systems Design. The study proceeded in 3 steps. Firstly, literature review was conducted to examine the process and components of Instructional Systems Design model such as ADDIE. Design Thinking models were also reviewed to determine the probability of integrating Design Thinking with ISD. Secondly, DT ISD model was constructed by adopting 3 principles of Design Thinking to ISD process. Thirdly, the internal validation research was conducted through 3 rounds delphi study and DT ISD model was finally validated by experts of instructional technology and lifelong education. DT ISD model is based upon constructionism in learning theory rather than behavioral or cognitive learning theory such as ADDIE. Hence, DT ISD model is an effective instructional design model for adult lifelong education program. It is suggested that action research is necessary to examine the external validation of DT ISD model.

  • The objective of this study is to develop an IS curriculum and its action plan for footwear industry based on the Instructional System Design(ISD) that is widely used in curriculum developments. To this end, six steps, including a goal setting, analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation are employed. Firstly, the explicit goal of IS curriculum development is defined and demands of IS education from the footwear companies are identified with questionnaires and interviews. In the design stage, the IS curriculum map is presented. With this map, the specific IT courses are established, classified by a type of industry, a function, and a level of skills. For the implementations, such particular actions as a selection of textbooks, places, managing trainees, and a training support plan are explained. Finally, the various evaluation methods are presented. The suggested IS curriculum can be applied to IS educations for the footwear companies and other related industries.

  • e-Learning content can be defined as digital content to achieve educational goals. Since it is an educational material that can be distributed in offline, online, and mobile environments, it is important to create content that meets the learner's education environment and educational goals. In particular, if the learner is a public official, the vision, philosophy, and characteristics of each local government must reflect. As non-face-to-face online education expands further due to the COVID-19 pandemic, local governments that have relied on onsite education in the past urgently require developing strong basic competency education and special task competency content that reflect regional characteristics. Such e-learning content, however, hardly exists and the ability to independently develop them is also insufficient. In this circumstance, this case study describes the process of self-production of e-learning content suitable for Busan's characteristics by the Human Resource Development (HRD) Institute of Busan City, a local government. The field of instructional design and instructional technology is always evolving and growing by blending technological innovation into instructional platform design and adapting to the changes in society. Busan HRD Institute (BHI), therefore, tried to implement blended learning by developing content that reflected the recent trend of micro-learning in e-learning through a detailed analysis. For this, an e-learning content developer with certain requirements was selected and contracted, and the process of developing content through a collaboration between the client and developer was described in this study according to the ADDIE model of Instructional Systems Development (ISD).

Play and Education Program Development Based on the Instructional Systems Development (교수체제개발에 기초한 놀이교육 프로그램 개발)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop play education programs based on the instructional systems development (ISD). To achieve the goal, play education programs for elementary school students were developed based on the ADDIE model. Internal researchers, teaching design experts, and subject matter expert reviewed, modified, and developed play and education programs having three modules: design and scheduling, making a model, and preparing an exhibition. Students set up a program to realize the play space they want through collaboration with their peers. The program was applied to fifth grade elementary school students in Chungju for verification of the play and education program. At the end of the play education program, the FGI was conducted on 13 students to measure the overall value of the play education program, including its sustainability. Through these processes, we drew the effects and implications of the play education program and presented future research directions of play education and projects for elementary school students.

  • The 21st century is called “an era of creation” or “an era of speed.” These are flat expressions requiring a fierce competition between individuals, corporations and nations. In a reality in which we should make new things continuously within a short period of time, the world best benchmarking can become a good alternative. The world best practice can be called “a mode of operation” that has created the world's best performance in a particular field of managerial activities. It is very meaningful for the nations' corporations, which have a lower competitiveness than world-class ones and weak points in the area of human resources development, in particular, to benchmark the world-class corporations' best practices of HRD. Therefore, this study is conducted in conformity with a model of the Instructional Systems Designs for the Total Quality Education that brings the structure of the world-class corporations' best practices of HRD into line with that of the Total Quality Management. That is, analysis, design, development, implementation and assessment are included in this study.

Application of the Rapid Prototyping Instructional Systems Design in Meridianology Laboratory (경혈학실습 체제적 교수설계를 위한 RPISD 모형 적용 연구)

  • Objectives : Instructional design is the systematic approach to the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation of learning materials and activities. We aimed to apply the rapid prototyping to instructional systems design (RPISD) in meridianology laboratory, a subject in which students train acupuncture to develop lesson plan. Methods : The needs of the stakeholders including client, subject matter expert and students were analyzed using the performance needs analysis model. Task analysis was implemented by observation and interview. First prototype was drafted and implemented in meridianology laboratory class once. The second prototype was modified from the first, by usability evaluation of the stakeholders. Results : The client requested an electronically documented manual to improve the quality of acupuncture training. The learner requested an extension of practice time and detailed practice guidelines. The main problems of students' performance were some cases of violation of clean needle technique, the lack of communication between the operator and recipient in direct, and lack of confidence in their own performance. Stakeholders were generally satisfied with the proposed first prototype. Second prototype of lesson plan was produced by modifying some contents. Conclusions : A lesson plan was developed by applying the systematic RPISD model. It is expected that the developed instructional design may contribute to the quality improvement of meridianology laboratory education.

  • Within a context of rapid technological change and shifting market conditions, the education environment requires new paradigm of education delivery In accordance of such a technological progress, distance education system, which makes the loaming take place at anytime anywhere, overcoming barriers of time, or distance, is emerging as a mainstream of education delivery replacing the convectional one way delivery system from instructor to learners. This Paper aims to introduce the development principle and algorithm about Instructional System Design(ISD) module, a part of a total solution for distance education services. It was developed on Linux, a free Unix-type operating system. Linux supports so various network protocols, sharing the network resources in a smooth way, that it is able to integrate with other operating system very easily, especially with Windows NT or Windows 2000 servers. In terms of quality, it never falls behind the windows products which are commercially available only, It is a right operating system for the such a school environment that is usually limited in budgets. The development environment of the distance education solution to which ISD module belongs is composing of Apache server for web server, Java bean based on components for ISD module, PHP, server-side scripting language, for HTML documents and MySQL for DBMS.
