  • This paper proposes a lightweight trace-driven Processing-In-Memory (PIM) simulator, TP-Sim. TP-Sim is a General Purpose PIM (GP-PIM) simulator that evaluates various PIM system performance-related metrics. Based on instruction and memory traces extracted from the Intel Pin tool, TP-Sim can replay trace files for multiple models of PIM architectures to compare its performance. To verify the availability of TP-Sim, we estimated three different system configurations on the STREAM benchmark. Compared to the traditional Host CPU-only systems with conventional memory hierarchy, simple GP-PIM architecture achieved better performance; even the Host CPU has the same number of in-order cores. For further study, we also extend TP-Sim as a part of a heterogeneous system simulator that contains CPU, GPGPU, and PIM as its primary and co-processors.

  • This study is to investigate an effective instruction for female students in an engineering classroom through gender -sensitive teaching strategies by analysing recorded classroom instruction, reflective journals of professor, and mentoring instructions of A professor teaching "non-steel materials and design" in an engineering classroom. This study which used a qualitative approach for data collection and analysis showed changes of A professor in his way of teaching. The changes are: making rough lesson plan ${\rightarrow}$ making detailed lesson plan being satisfied with his teaching skills ${\rightarrow}$ trying to improve his teaching skills, using negative feedback ${\rightarrow}$ using positive feedback, pointing weaknesses as pre-engineers ${\rightarrow}$ providing detailed information needed to be engineers. This paper deals with the theory comparison between a conventional engineering education and new engineering education, in which conventional models may fail to give satisfactory results. Finally, we provide real application examples to evaluate the feasibility and generality of the proposed method in this paper.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the paper model of protein synthesis process in order for students to learn more effectively the protein synthesis, and to examine learning effects of instruction using it in high school biology. For this study, 117 students of 12th grade were sampled from a high school in Daejeon metropolitan city. The students were divided into two groups; the control group(n=58) were taught the protein synthesis by explanation-based traditional teaching method, and the experimental group(=59) were taught them by using protein synthesis model. Instruction using the model of protein synthesis process was more effective in improving the students' academic achievements and motivating interests in their learning than the traditional intruction. The class using the models can be another effective teaching method to teach students abstract and complicated concepts like protein synthesis process.

  • This study is to point out importance of narrative as a way of learning values and interests for learners. Thus, geography value instruction models with narrative was developed and applied to teaching model. The results are as follows: First, narrative is useful to value education. Because narrative includes the contextual information, leaners are able to make a moral decision in respect of socio-cultural approach and to reach more truthful and practical decision with empathic understanding. Second, comparing with an expository text, the narrative text is more interesting, understandable, and preferred. Third, Web of meaning, one of scaffolding skills, is helpful to expand the scope of learner's thinking and group activity. Fourth, learner's awareness toward the topic changes. However, it is required to develop a practical method for elaborate assessment tool and for learners' active participation.

  • Smart education is defined as creating new values through connecting educational elements based on smart devices and infrastructure. In the study, we propose a theoretical and procedural framework for developing smart learning activities, which is considered characteristic of smart education, as well as environments in smart schools of Sejong Special Autonomous city. In addition, we discuss an instructional model developed from the framework. A smart learning activity as a basic unit in instruction is represented as a block when design and instruction focuses on smart learning activities. The block consists of components from learning activities, motivation, information activities, and tools when a teacher has smart learning ideas. Based on the theoretical and procedural framework, the thought-sharing model (i.e., that learners share ideas and opinions with classmates, review classmates' work, and enhance their own work) is an instructional model that leads to smart education. We discuss considerations for developing instructional models using the framework.

  • We have been setting in The age of Ubiquitous that people are able to connect networks whenever and wherever by developing network. We can take any classes anytime we want even right checking out the result of a test through the internet with the spread of networks. The development of net-works has created WBI(Web Based Instruction) which has covered the limit of conservative education for instance, there are some content differences whenever a teacher teaches for each class, it is hard to take a lesson after having a certain period, the process of the class is changed as time goes by and so on. As the study of WBI is actively being worked in this moment, a various of class models are showing and materializing. In WBI, the exiting Objective Checking Assessment is applicable, some of the Performance Assessment which inspects and judges students' actual performance is Working whereas teachers who actually give them points don't have a embodied Performance Assessment Program. In this paper, I will present a Performance Assessment to use conveniently Performance Assessment Program not just students carrying out Performance Assessment using the internet but also teachers dealing with actual administrative works.

  • SVLIW processor architectures can resolve resource collisions and data dependencies between the instructions while scheduling VLIW instructions at run-time. As a result, long NOP word instructions can be removed from the object code produced for the processor. Thus, the occurrence of cache misses on the SVLIW processor would be lesser than that on the same cache size VLIW processor. Less frequent cache misses on the SVLIW processor would incur less frequent memory access, and thus, the total execution cycles to complete an application would be shortened compared with cases on the VLIW processor. Such a feature eventually compromises effects of longer instruction pipeline stages than those of the VLIW processor. In this paper, we formulate and compare two execution cycle models of the two architectures. A simulation results show that the longer memory access cycles when cache miss occurs, the total execution cycles of SVLIW processor would be shorter than those of VLIW processor.

  • In this paper, we describe gesture recognition algorithm using computer vision sensor and HMM. The automatic hand region extraction has been proposed for initializing the tracking of the tele-operation gestures. For this, distance informations(disparity map) as results of stereo matching of initial left and right images are employed to isolate the hand region from a scene. PDOE(positive difference of edges) feature images adapted here have been found to be robust against noise and background brightness. The KNU/KAERI(K/K) gesture instruction set is defined for tele-operation in atomic electric power stations. The composite recognition model constructed by concatenating three gesture instruction models including pre-orders, basic orders, and post-orders has been proposed and identified by discrete HMM. Our experimental results showed that consecutive orders composed of more than two ones are correctly recognized at the rate of above 97%.

Abstract This research presents a novel analytic model to predict the instruction execution rate of superscalar processors using the queuing model with finite-buffer size and synchronous operation mode. The proposed model is also able to analyze the performance relationship between cache and pipeline. The proposed model takes into account various kinds of architectural parameters such as instruction-level parallelism, branch probability, the accuracy of branch prediction, cache miss, and etc.. To prove the correctness of the model, we performed extensive simulations and compared the results with the analytic model. Simulation results showed that the proposed model can estimate the average execution rate accurately within 10% error compared to simulation results. The proposed model can explain the causes of performance bottleneck which cannot be uncovered by the simulation method only. The model is also able to show the effect of the cache miss on the performance of out-of-order issue superscalar processors, which can provide an valuable information in designing a balanced system.

  • Circular motion has been one of the most difficult concepts for students to understand. To facilitate for students to form scientific mental models about circular motion, this study developed 4M learning cycle teaching model based on the integrated mental model theory and strategies. For this study, fifty-three eleventh graders at a technical high school in Inchon were taught for 3 class hours. We conducted tests of basic physics concept and mental model of circular motion before, after, and two months after instruction. In results, we found that there were statistically significant improvement in the test of basic physics concept and mental model related with circular motion after instruction. Especially, this teaching model affected learning effectiveness of Correctness and Coherence of mental model.
