C-Hook is a kind of conveyer system for transporting steel coil in POSCO. To detect the current position and the trajectory of steel coils in a plant, C-Hooks are tracked by an inspection system based on PLC. The inspection system detects transit of C-Hooks by monitoring a physical contact between steel bars on a C-Hook and the inspection sensors. However, this system is not reliable because of the abrasion, damage and aging. Moreover, the number of distinguishable C-Hooks is limited by the number of combination of steel bars on a C-Hook. It means that more steel bars should be installed for distinguishing the more C-Hooks. Therefore, the conventional system is difficult and expensive to maintain. To overcome these problems, we propose a C-Hook identification system that uses RFID which is a non-contact type identification system, and evaluate its performance and applicability from a new monitoring program that operates along with the conventional system in the real environment of POSCO.

This study investigates the applicability and design scheme of fieldbus network in the measurement system used for precise and safe construction as well as efficient maintenance of bridges. In order to maximize the function and performance of bridge monitoring system, this study introduces the CAN(Controller Area Network), one of the fieldbus protocols, in the measurement system of bridges. This study presents the implementation method of CAN on the monitoring system of bridge, and also proposes a bandwidth allocation scheme for the design of network. The validity of the proposed CAN design method is verified through a simulation experiment. It is shown that the CAN can be readily applicable to the measurement system of bridges.

The continuing development of the sensors for the measurement of the safety of structures has been making a turning point in measuring and evaluating the larger civil structural system as well. However, there are still remaining problems to be solved for the extremely large structure because the natural damages of those structures are not so simple to be monitored for the reason of their locational and structural conditions. One of the most significant problems is that a number of cables which connect the measuring system to the analyzer are liable to distort actual data. This paper presents a new monitoring system for large structures by means of a local wireless communication technique which would eliminate the possibility of the distortion of data by noise in cables. This new monitoring system employs the wireless system and the software for data communication, along with the strain sensor and accelerometers which have been already used in the past. It makes it possible for the data, which have been chosen by the central controling system from the various sensors placed in the large civil structures, to be wirelessly delivered and then analyzed and evaluated by decision making system of the structures.
A remote controlled mobile robot system has been developed and tested to monitor the radiation area in the nuclear power plant. The mobile robot system operates according to car-driving-like commands and is capable of radiation measurement and visual inspection in unmanned situations under radiation. The robot system is equipped with a radiation sensor and two cameras with appropriate illumination set-ups. The camera with auto-focus function and 8-times zoom lens is mounted on the pan/tilt rotational base and the other is mounted on the front panel of the robot system. All commands regarding the motion of the mobile robot and various sensors are given through the monitoring system which is designed to provide an integrated man-machine interface.

Manufacturing data analysis and its applications are getting a huge popularity in various industries. In spite of the fast advancement in the big data analysis technology, however, the manufacturing quality data monitored from the automated inspection system sometimes is not reliable enough due to the complex patterns of product quality. In this study, thus, we aim to define the level of trusty of an automated quality inspection system and improve the reliability of the quality inspection data. By correlation analysis and feature selection, this paper presents a method of improving the inspection accuracy and efficiency in an SVM-based automatic product quality inspection system using thermal image data in an auto part manufacturing case. The proposed method is implemented in the sealer dispensing process of the automobile manufacturing and verified by the analysis of the optimal feature selection from the quality analysis results.

Nondestructive inspection and accompanying life analysis based on fracture mechanics were the major conventional methods for evaluating remaining life of critical high temperature components in power plants. By using these conventional methods, it has been difficult to perform in-service inspection for life prediction. Also, quantitative damage evaluation due to unexpected abrupt changes in operating temperature was almost impossible. Thus, many efforts have been made for evaluating remaining life during operation of the plants and predicting real-time life usage values based on the shape of structures, operating history, and material properties. In this study, a core software for on-line life monitoring system which carries out real-time life evaluation of a critical component in power boiler(high temperature steam headers) is developed. The software is capable of evaluating creep and fatigue life usage from the real-time stress data calculated by using temperature/stress transfer Green functions derived for the specific headers and by counting transient cycles. The major benefits of the developed software lie in determining future operating schedule, inspection interval, and replacement plan by monitoring real-time life usage based on prior operating history.
Development and application of structural health monitoring system in Korea have become active since the early 1990's. In earlier applications, health monitoring systems were installed in several existing bridges in order to collect initial field data by full scale load capacity test for design verification and subsequently monitor long-term performance and durability of the bridge as part of an inspection and maintenance program. Recently, modem and integrated monitoring systems have been introduced in most of the newly constructed long-span bridges since the design stage. This paper outlines the progresses and applications of monitoring systems in Korea for both existing and newly constructed bridges and describes their aims and characteristics.

In order to introduce remote monitoring system for effective safety management of electrical facilities for general use, which the most of electrical fires and non-inspection problems due to absence are generated development of local device model considering cost and installation is requested. This paper presents local device models for remote electrical safety inspection of electrical facilities for general use and in order to rational model according to installation place of electrical facilities for general use, compare and analysis cost, installation and communication method of local device models. The results show that rational model for remote safety inspection of electrical facilities located in houses, which occupy the must of electrical facilities for general use, is to give safety monitoring ability to low voltage remote meter reading(or automatic meter reading: AMR).
Gears are essential elements for mechanical power transmission. Geometric precision is the main factor for characterizing gear grade and qualify. Gear pitch is one of the crucial measurements, which is defined as a distance between two adjacent gear teeth. It is well-known that variability in gear pitches may causes wear-out and vibration noise. Therefore maintaining pitch errors at a low level plays a key role in assuring the gear quality to customers. This paper is concerned with a case study, which presents a computerized system for Inspecting pitch errors in a gear machining process. This system consists of a PC and window-based programs. Although the start and stop is manually accomplished, the process of measuring and analyzing pitch data is automatically conducted in this system. Our purpose lies in reducing inspection cost and time as well as Increasing test reliability. Its operation is briefly illustrated by example. Sometimes a strong autocorrelation is observed from pitch data. We also discuss a process monitoring scheme taking account of autocorrelations.
Purpose: Analyze the results of on-site inspection of the tunnel structure maintenance management monitoring and suggest improvement plans. Method: We investigate and analyze the problems of various items on maintenance monitoring of tunnel structure of 14 subway lines of Seoul subway in downtown area. Result: The maintenance monitoring items, measurement quantity and installation location are classified into open tunnel and excavation tunnel and improvement plans are suggested respectively. Various durability criteria of the measuring instruments were examined, and durability confirmation method suggested improvement measures such as approval, inspection, inspection and testing, calibration of monitoring sensors. Conclusion: Applying the improvement measures of the tunnel structure maintenance monitoring to the construction site will increase the efficiency of the maintenance monitoring and contribute to the development of construction monitoring technology.
