Degradation of Volatile Hydrocarbons Using Continuous-Flow Photocatalytic Systems with Enhanced Catalytic Surface Areas

  • Limited information is available on the degradation of volatile hydrocarbons determined via the use of plate-inserted photocatalytic reactors. This has led to the evaluation of surface areas of cylindrical continuous-flow photocatalytic reactors for the degradation of three selected aromatic hydrocarbons. Three types of reactors were prepared: a double cylinder-type, a single cylindrical-type without plates and a single cylindrical-type with inserted glass tubes. According to diffuse reflectance, FTIR and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy, the surface characteristics of a coated photocatalyst were very similar to those of raw $TiO_2$, thereby suggesting that the coated photocatalyst exhibited the same photocatalytic activity as the raw $TiO_2$. The photocatalytic degradation efficiencies were significantly or slightly higher for the single cylinder-type reactor than for the double cylinder-type reactor which had a greater catalytic surface area. However, for all target compounds, the degradation efficiencies increased gradually when the number of plates was increased. Accordingly, it was suggested that the surface area being enhanced for the plate-inserted reactor would elevate the photocatalytic degradation efficiency effectively. In addition, this study confirmed that both initial concentrations of target compounds and flow rates were important parameters for the photocatalytic removal mechanism of these plate-inserted photocatalytic reactors.

SiC single crystal grown on a seed with an inserted epitaxial layer for the power device application

  • SiC single crystal Ingots were prepared onto different seed material using sublimation PVT techniques and then their crystal quality was systematically compared. In this study, the conventional SiC seed material and the new SiC seed material with an inserted SiC epitaxial layer on a seed surface were used as a seed for SiC bulk growth. The inserted epitaxial layer was grown by a sublimation epitaxy method called the CST with a low growth rate of $2{\mu}m/h$ N-type 2"-SIC single crystals exhibiting the polytype of 6H-SiC were successfully fabricated and carrier concentration levels of below $10^{17}/cm^3$ were determined from the absorption spectrum and Hall measurements. The slightly higher growth rate and carrier concentration were obtained in SiC single crystal Ingot grown on new SiC Seed materials with the inserted epitaxial layer on the seed surface, maintaining the high quality.

  • The effects of an inserted coil on flow patterns and heat transport performance for a horizontal rotating heat pipe have been studied experimentally. Especially, the present study is to see an internally inserted helical coil inside a RHP would lead to the same kind of results as internal fins. Visualization test conducted for an acryl tube, charged water with at a volumetric rate of 20%. When the flow kept pool regime at a low RPM(less than 1,000 RPM), the movement of coil forced the water to flow in axial direction. But this pumping effect of coil disappeared, when the pool regime changed to annular one which could be created by increasing RPM. The pumping effects for RHP with an inserted coil resulted enhancement both in condensation heat transfer coefficient and heat transport limitation, as obtained in case of using internal fins. But all these effects became negligible in the range of higher RPM(above 1,000∼1,200) with the transition of flow regime to annular flow.

Unusual Orientation of cDNAs Found in a cDNA Library

  • Many cloning vectors in which cDNAs can be inserted to the sense orientation have been developed. Uni-ZAP XR vector (Stratagene) should contain clones that are oriented to sense direction with respect to T3 RNA polymerase primer. Unexpectedly, large portions of cDNAs in Chinese cabbage cDNA library showed unusual insertions, antisense orientation and a hybrid of two different clones. Using two clones, 4H03 and 53-B10, derived from different cDNA libraries, we proposed and demonstrated the possibility of unusual-construct formation by in vitro translation and northern blot analysis. The 4H03 clone was inserted with inverse direction, and its transcript and translation product could be produced by T7 RNA polymerase, indicating that this clone is definitely inserted into inverse orientation. The 53-B10 that contains two independent genes was turned out to be a hybrid in which two genes are inserted to opposite direction each other. All unusual constructs might be due to the presence of small fragments of DNA, like adapter. However, the mechanism underlined the formation of unusual constructs is still remain to be solved.

평활관 및 와이어코일을 삽입한 열전달촉진관에서 액체질소의 흐름비등열전달 특성 (Flow Boiling Heat Transfer Characteristics of Liquid Nitrogen in Plain and Wire Coil Inserted Tubes)

  • Boiling heat transfer characteristics of liquid nitrogen in a stainless steel plain tube and wire coil inserted tubes were investigated. The test tubes, which had an inner diameter of 10.6 m and a length of 1.65 m, were horizontally located. Five wire coils having different pitch and thickness were inserted into the plain tube. The pitches of the wire coils were 18.4, 27.6, and 36.8 m, and the thickness was 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 mm respectively. Tests were conducted at a saturation temperature of $-191^{\circ}$, mass fluxes from 58 to 105 kg/$m^2s$, and heat fluxes from 22.5 to 32.7 kw/$m^2$. A direct heating method was used to apply heat to the test section. The boiling heat transfer coefficients of liquid nitrogen were represented as a function of vapor quality, which showed significant drop at the dryout vapor quality. The maximum heat transfer enhancement using the wire coil inserted tubes over the plain tube was $174\%$ for 'Wire 3' having a thickness of 2.5 mm and a pitch of 18.4 mm.

  • In the very high temperature reactor (VHTR), which is a next generation nuclear reactor system, ceramics are used as a fuel coating material and graphite is used as a core structural material. Even if a depressurization accident occurs and the reactor power goes up instantly, the temperature of the core will change only slowly. This is because the thermal capacity of the core is so high. Therefore, the VHTR system can passively remove the decay heat of the core by natural convection and radiation from the surface of the reactor pressure vessel. The objectives of this study are to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of natural convection of a one-side heated vertical channel with inserted porous materials of high porosity and also to develop the passive cooling system for the VHTR. An experiment was carried out using a one-side heated vertical rectangular channel. To obtain the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of the vertical channel with inserted porous material, we have also carried out a numerical analysis using a commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code. This paper describes the thermal performances of the one-side heated vertical rectangular channel with an inserted copper wire of high porosity.

나노급 Au층 삽입 니켈실리사이드의 미세구조 변화 (Microstructure Evaluation of Nano-thick Au-inserted Nickel Silicides)

  • Thermally evaporated 10 nm-Ni/1 nm-Au/(30 nm-poly)Si structures were fabricated in order to investigate the thermal stability of Au-inserted nickel silicide. The silicide samples underwent rapid thermal annealing at $300{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ for 40 seconds. The sheet resistance was measured using a four-point probe. A scanning electron microscope and a transmission electron microscope were used to determine the cross-sectional structure and surface image. High-resolution X-ray diffraction and a scanning probe microscope were employed for the phase and surface roughness. According to sheet resistance and XRD analyses, nickel silicide with Au had no effect on widening the NiSi stabilization temperature region. Au-inserted nickel silicide on a single crystal silicon substrate showed nano-dots due to the preferred growth and a self-arranged agglomerate nano phase due to agglomeration. It was possible to tune the characteristic size of the agglomerate phase with silicidation temperatures. The nano-thick Au-insertion was shown to lead to self-arranged microstructures of nickel silicide.

Channel Transfer Function Estimation based on Delay and Doppler Profile for Underwater Acoustic OFDM Communication System

  • In this paper, we proposed Channel Transfer Function estimation based on Delay and Doppler Profile for underwater acoustic OFDM communication system. It improved the estimation accuracy of the channel transfer function by linear time interpolation the change of Scattered Pilot (SP) insertion frequency in the time direction and the time by Delay and Doppler profile that analyzes the multipath situation of the channel investigated the performance of interpolation by simulation and report it. Previous works is inserted SP every 4 OFDM. It was effective under the environment without multipath, but it has observed that the effect of CTF compensation has been lowered in multipath channel condition. In addition to be better when inserted SP every 2 OFDM. But the amount of sending data will be decrease. Therefore, we conducted research to improve 4 OFDM with new interpolator. A computer simulation was performed as a comparison of SP inserted every 4 OFDM, SP inserted every 2 OFDM, and 4 OFDM with new interpolator. the performance of the proposed system is overwhelmingly improved, and the performance is slightly improved even 64 QAM.

강판 보강 집성재 보의 휨성능 평가 연구 (Evaluation on Flexural Performance of Steel Plate Reinforced GLT Beams)

  • In this study, we will develop a hybrid cross-sectional shape of steel inserted type glued-laminated timber that can improve the strength of structural glued-laminated timber and maximize the ductility by using steel plate with excellent tensile and deformation ability. A total of three specimens were fabricated and the flexural performance test was carried out to evaluate the structural performance of the steel inserted type glued-laminated timber. In order to compare the effect of steel inserted glued-laminated timber, one structural glued-laminated timber test specimen composed of pure wood was manufactured. In addition, in order to evaluate the adhesion performance of the steel inserted, one each of a screw joint test specimen and a polyurethane joint test specimen was prepared. As a result, all the specimens showed the initial crack in the finger joint near the force point. This has been shown to be a cause of crack diffusion and strength degradation. The use of finger joints in the maximum moment section is considered to affect the strength and ductility of the glued-laminated timber beam. Polyurethane-adhesive steel inserted glued-laminated timber showed fully-composite behavior with little horizontal separation between the steel plate and glued-laminated timber until the maximum load was reached. This method has been shown to exhibit sufficient retention bending performance.
