  • In earthquake engineering area, the critical excitation method is an approach to find the most severe earthquake subjected to the structure. However, given some earthquake constraints, such as intensity and power, the critical excitations have spectral density functions that often resonate with the first modes of the structure. This paper presents a non-stationary critical excitation that is capable of exciting the main modes of the structure using a non-uniform power spectral density (PSD) that is similar to natural earthquakes. Thus, this paper proposes a new method to estimate the power and intensity of earthquakes. Finally, a new method for the linear seismic design of structures using a modified non-stationary critical excitation is proposed.

  • Passive velocity field control (PVFC) was previously developed for fully mechanical systems, in which the motion task was specified behaviorally in terms of a velocity field, and the closed-loop was passive with respect to a supply rate given by the environment input. However the PVFC was only applied to a single manipulator, the proposed control law was derived geometrically, and the geometric and robustness properties of the closed-loop system were also analyzed. In this paper, we propose a method to apply a decentralized control algorithm to cooperative 3-wheeled mobile robots whose subsystem is under nonholonomic constraints and which convey a common rigid object in a horizontal plain. Moreover it is shown that multiple robot systems ensure stability and the velocities of augmented systems convergence to a scaled multiple of each desired velocity field for cooperative mobile robot systems.

  • Collision avoidance for the aircraft can be stated as a problem of maintaining a safe distance between aircrafts in conflict. Optimal collision avoidance problem seeks to minimize the given cost function while simultaneously satisfying the constraints. The cost function can be a function of time or input. This paper addresses the trajectory time-optimization problem for collision avoidance of the unmanned aerial vehicles. The problem is difficult to handle, because it is a two points boundary value problem with dynamic environment. Some simplifying algorithms are used for application in on-line operation. Although there are more complicated problems, by prediction of conflict time and some assumptions, we changed a dynamic environment problem into a static one.

  • In this paper, we proposed static output feedback model predictive control for Wiener models. We adopted polytopic uncertainty description of Wiener Model Predictive Control (WMPC) algorithms for considering output nonlinearities. Robust stability conditions have been presented under which the closed loop stability of static output feedback MPC is guaranteed. The proposed control law is determined from the static output feedback WMPC based on the current estimated state with explicit satisfaction of input constraints.

  • The dual-mode strategy has been adopted in many constrained MPC methods. The size of stabilizable regions of states of MPC methods depends on the size of underlying feasible and positively invariant set and number of control moves. These results, however, could be conservative because the definition of positive invariance does not allow temporal leave of states from the set, In this paper, a concept of periodic invariance is introduced in which states are allowed to leave a set temporarily but return into the set in finite steps. The periodic invariance can defined with respect to sets of different state feedback gains. These facts make it possible for the periodically invariant sets to considerably larger than ordinary invariant sets. The periodic invariance can be defined for systems with polyhedral model uncertainties. We derive a MPC method based on these periodically invariant sets. Some numerical examples are given to show that the use of periodic invariance yields considerably larger stabilizable sets than the case of using ordinary invariance.

  • An observer-based fault tolerant control (FTC) method is proposed for constrained switched systems (CSS) with input constraints. A family of Lyapunov-based bounded controllers are designed to ensure that, whenever actuator faults occur at the dwell time period of each continuous mode, the mode is always within its corresponding stability region. A set of switching laws are designed to guarantee the asymptotic stability of the overall CSS. The fixed stability regions on which the FTC method is based are also relaxed by the proposed variable stability regions. An example of CPU processing illustrates the effectiveness of proposed method.

  • Motions of animals and gymnasts in the air as well as free flying space robots without thruster are subject to nonholonomic constraints generated by the law of conservation of angular momentum. The interest in nonholonomic control problems is motivated by the fact that such systems can not stabilized to its equilibrium points by the smooth control input. The purpose of this paper is to derive analytical posture control laws for free flying objects in the air. We propose a control method using bang-bang control for trajectory planning of a 3 link mechanical system with initial angular momentum. We reduce the DOF (degrees of freedom) of control object in the first control phase and determine the control inputs to steer the reduced order system from its initial position to its desired position. Computer simulation for a motion planning of an athlete approximated by 3 link is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the Proposed control scheme.

  • The robust controller for the nuclear reactor power control system is designed. The reactor model is set up by use of the point kinetics equations and the singly lumped energy balance equations. Since the model is different from the actual plant, the controller which makes the system robust is necessary. The perturbation of the actual plant is investigated with respect to several possible sources of uncertainty. Then the overall system is configured into the two port model and the $H_{\infty}$ controller is designed. The loop shaping and the permissible control rod speed are considered as the design constraints. The designed $H_{\infty}$ controller provides the sufficient margins for the robustness, and the system output as well as the control input satisfy their relevant requirements.

  • This paper discusses two algorithms for recommending notebook computer (NBC) and workstation adjustments so that the user can assume an ergonomic seated posture during NBC operation. Required input data are the user's anthropometric data and physical dimensions of the NBC and the workstation. The first algorithm is based on an assumption that there are no workstation constraints while the second algorithm considers the actual seat height and work surface height. The results from the algorithms include recommendations for adjusting the NBC (tilt angle of the NBC base unit, angle between the base and screen units, and base support height) and the workstation (heights of seat support and footrest, and distance between the body and the NBC).

  • The design of flow control protocols for integrared networks with complete voice traffic on the data link level is investigated. The class of admissible flow control policies analyzed maximized the average data link throughput subject to an average system time delay constraints a finite intervals (O,s). In particular, it is shown that the optimum control law is bang-bang (window flow mechanism). The window size L can be analytically derived from maximum tolerated time delay T, the input arrival C of the queueing system, the duration of the time interval S, the initial number of packets in the queue.
