  • This study is about the impact of a technology-based start-ups' patent-related activities on early stage company performance. Technology-based start-ups are closely related to the intellectual property rights, particularly patents that they aim the pursuit of new products or production methods and pioneer the introduction of market based on innovative technology, and that is a key role in such companies established and operating, hence the research of patent-related activities in technology-based start-ups has important implications. In most previous studies, the impact of the company's patent related activities on the performance of corporate management is determined by using quantitative patent indicators. Therefore, through this study, causal relationships leading to business performance through the development of new products, which includes technology performance and product performance, and the patent-related activities including the company's patented technology support activities, creating the right activities, infringement response activities, base activities validated as follows. First, the patent-related activities have a positive impact on technological and products achievements. In other words, the various activities involved in the acquisition and utilization of the patent have a positive impact on the performance of company's new product development, particularly developing new technologies or patent acquisition rate. Second, the technology have a positive impact on the performance of the products, not on the business performance. However, the empirical results shows that it has indirectly impacts on business performance through the product performance. Third, product performance have a positive impact on business performance. In conclusion, patent-related activities affects the performance of the company's management, and the maintenance of the company's business performance depends on the developing and selling product based on the customers needs, besides the technology performance such as the patents and the development of technology.

  • Purpose - As Korea is reaching a post-aged society, the number of chronic illness is increasing, and the demand for rehabilitation medical device is growing. Although there is high potential for the growth in rehabilitation industry, because most of the related companies in Korea are relatively small, lacking capital or R&D resource, it is difficult for them to create an innovative product, and currently most of the high-tech equipments are imported. Therefore a medical device cluster, where business, research, medical institutes and universities may work cooperatively to enhance research development and solve issues is necessary for future development. Research design, data, methodology - In this method we have done a literature review of the rehabilitation industry and industrial cluster. Based on the studies, we have conducted an exploratory factor analysis by studying examples of foreign and domestic medical clusters and drawing success factors in forming a medical cluster. Next based on the studies we have conducted a survey to domestic medical device companies to find their difficulties and needs to form a successful medical device cluster. Results - This paper provides both theoretic review on success factors of forming a medical device cluster and practical analysis using case study and survey. Conclusion - The significance of this paper is that based on the literature review, we have compared actual examples of domestic/foreign medical clusters and drawn difference and coincidence between literature and actual cluster success factor. We were also able to conduct a survey on actual medical device companies and through the results we were able to search difficulties and necessities of medical device companies.

  • This study aims to analyze the potential and limitations of using traditional men's suits as upcycled materials by examining case studies of deconstructed and reassembled designs. The research explores the potential of upcycled suit design and proposes data to guide future directions in upcycling. A literature review was conducted, revealing that upcycled designs are often created through deconstruction, within the framework of Jacques Derrida's deconstructionist philosophy. The study examined 10 brands that focused on suit-based upcycled designs across two or more seasons, resulting in 202 upcycled suit products for analysis to identify key design characteristics. Upcycle suits have been shown to be disordered decentralized properties through deformation, discontinuity through deformation, and damage through reconstruction of existing suits. First, deformation was expressed in the design of a typical dressing, asymmetry, overlap, distortion, and repetition. Second, deformation mainly appeared as a method of omission, heterogeneous insertion, material conversion, and separation. Third, damage appeared as a doodle, tear, and incomplete up-cycle design method. Using these methods, three decentralized upcycle suit designs were developed, and a new direction of upcycle design was suggested. The study concludes that upcycled suit design can contribute to sustainable fashion by achieving zero waste, developing refined sewing techniques, pursuing diverse design methods, and promoting transparency in production. This research offers insights into innovative and diverse product development through the reinterpretation of discarded suits.

  • Companies' interest in developing AI-based intelligent new products is increasing. Recently, the main concern of companies is to innovate customer experience and create new values by developing new products through the effective use of Artificial intelligence technology. However, due to the nature of products based on radical technologies such as artificial intelligence, intelligent products differ from existing products and development methods, so it is clear that there is a limitation to applying the existing development methodology as it is. This study proposes a new research method based on KANO-TOPSIS for the successful development of AI-based intelligent new products by using car voice assistants as an example. Using the KANO model, select and evaluate functions that customers think are necessary for new products, and use the TOPSIS method to derives priorities by finding the importance of functions that customers need. For the analysis, major categories such as vehicle condition check and function control elements, driving-related elements, characteristics of voice assistant itself, infotainment elements, and daily life support elements were selected and customer demand attributes were subdivided. As a result of the analysis, high recognition accuracy should be considered as a top priority in the development of car voice assistants. Infotainment elements that provide customized content based on driver's biometric information and usage habits showed lower priorities than expected, while functions related to driver safety such as vehicle condition notification, driving assistance, and security, also showed as the functions that should be developed preferentially. This study is meaningful in that it presented a new product development methodology suitable for the characteristics of AI-based intelligent new products with innovative characteristics through an excellent model combining KANO and TOPSIS.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analysis sectoral patterns of technological innovation in Korean manufacturing sector. Pavitt(1984) put forward a well-known taxonomy that industries three groups of industries characterized by markedly different innovative modes, namely science-based, production-intensive and supplier-dominated industries. Using Pavitt's taxonomy as a framework, we try to explain similarities and differences among sectors in the sources and impact of innovations. Based on a sample of 2,371 firms in manufacturing industry, this paper investigated its relevance to explain the sources and directions of innovative activities in Korean industries. Empirical study shows that in supplier dominated firms most process innovations come from suppliers of equipment and materials. In science-based firms product innovation is produced internally, based on the rapid development of the underlying sciences in the universities and research institutes. It also shows that production-intensive firms have a positive association between innovativeness and customer collaboration. This explanation has implications for our understanding of the sources and directions of technical changes, the formation of technological advantages at the level of both region and country.

  • Owing to the rapid growth of hypermarket/discount store formats since 1996, Korean retailing has suddenly attracted the significant attention from researchers. Before the emergence of large scale retailers such as E-Mart, Lotte Mart and Tesco Korea, there were the two retail formats who led the Korean retailing in the modern retailing history: department store and supermarket formats. Nevertheless, there has been little literature concerned about the two retail formats as a case study, while some authors have paid their attention to hypermarket/discount store formats. In addition, when mentioning the development process of retailing history, it is less likely that authors have made an effort to illustrate supermarket retailing history. In order to regard supermarket retailing as part of the Korean retailing, it is interesting to look at a representative supermarket retailer, Haitai, who was one of the subsidiaries of Haitai chaebol. Based on supermarket retailing, the company which was established as a joint venture in 1974 led a supermarket retailing in the Korean modernised retailing history. Before analysing whether Haitai failed or not, the definition of failure should be illustrated. With regard to the term, failure, in the academic world, authors have interchangeably used the following terms: failure, divestment, closure, organisational restructuring, and exit. To collect research data as a case study, the author adopted an in-depth interview method. The research is based on research interviews with 13 ex-staff who left after Haitai went bankruptcy, from store management department to merchandise department. By investigating Haitai's experiences through field interviews, the research found that Haitai restructured organisational decision-making process at the early stage when companies started to modernise organisational charts, benchmarking sophisticated retailing knowledge through the strategic alliance with a Japanese retailer. In respect of buying system, the company established firmly buying functions by adopting central buying system, and further, outstandingly allocated considerable marketing resources to the development of retailer brands with the dedicated team of retailer brand development. In the grocery retailing, abandoning a 'no-frill' packaging concept, the introduction of retailer brand packaging equal to, or better than national brand packaging design, encouraged other retailers to change their retailer brand development strategies. In product sourcing ways, Haitai organised for the first time the overseas sourcing team with the aim of improving the profit margins of foreign products and providing exotic products for customers, followed by other retailers. Regarding distribution system, the company introduced the innovative idea which delivered products ordered by stores directly to each store withboth its own vehicles and its own warehouse in which could deal with dry foods, chilly foods, frozen food, and non-foods, and even, process produce. In addition, Haitai developed many promotional methods to attract more customers like 'the guarantee of the lowest price', and expanded its own business to US in 1996, although withdrew, because of bankruptcy in 1997. Together with POS introduction in 1994, Haitai made a significant contribution to the development of the Korean retailing, influencing other retailers in many aspects. As a case study, the study has provided a number of lessons from Haitai's experiences for academicians and practitioners, suggesting that its history should be involved in the Korean modernised retailing.

  • With the technology of the 4th Industrial Revolution integrated into the industry as a whole, digital transformation (DT) is becoming an innovative and essential element of corporate survival in the fashion industry, and it is expected that the paradigm shift in shopping will become an unavoidable reality, especially based on the AR. Therefore, in this study, the characteristics of augmented reality were presented separately as perceived realism, interaction, pleasure, and usability, and the influence of augmented reality by immersion parameters on the user's satisfaction and intended to reveal the relationship between satisfaction and usage through the characteristics of augmented reality. For the purpose of this study, a structured questionnaire was conducted, and the available 209 responses were collected and used for empirical analysis. The results of the empirical analysis are as follows. First, while immersion has the greatest effect on satisfaction, the effect on use intention has a stronger effect on satisfaction than immersion. This indicates that purchase occurs when the user's immersion leads to satisfaction, and when the satisfaction falls, the intention to use is also lowered. Second, interactivity, enjoyment, and ease of use among the various characteristics of fashion applications have a positive effect on immersion. Among them, ease of use had a strong effect on immersion. In light of this, it can be seen that ease of use should be considered first when creating an application based on augmented reality in the future fashion industry. However, the perceived reality is low in the degree of immersion, and the effect on satisfaction is also lowered, so it is difficult to be connected to intention. Considering that this study was conducted through indirect experience through video viewing, this study expects the development of research through a more practical research model in the future, as the impact is considered to be a relatively low measurement.
