세계선도 중소기업의 혁신 성공요인 분석 (Analysis of Success Factors for Innovation of Global Leading SMEs)

  • 중소기업의 성장은 국가혁신체제(National Innovation System: NIS)에서 핵심적인 요소로서 그 중요성이 지속적으로 강조되고 있다. 최근, 작지만 강한 기업인 히든챔피언에 대한 관심이 증대되고, 이에 대한 성공모델을 제시함으로써 중소기업의 성공을 도모하려는 연구들이 확산되고 있다. 그러나 히든챔피언에 대한 정성적인 연구는 많은 반면, 정량적으로 분석한 연구는 미흡하기 때문에, 본 연구에서는 그와 유사한 세계선도 중소기업을 선정하여 기술혁신활동조사 자료를 통해 정량적인 방법으로 다른 유형의 중소기업과의 차이점을 분석하고, 혁신 성공요인을 도출하고자 한다. 이를 위해 첫째, 선행연구들을 통해 세계선도 중소기업의 혁신 성공요인 변수를 도출하고, 둘째, t검정, 카이스퀘어검정, 그리고 로지스틱회귀분석을 통해 정량적인 성공요인을 도출한다. 결과적으로, 중소기업은 정부기관과 박람회 같은 외부정보를 활용하여 시장추세와 비즈니스 기회를 파악하고, 정부에서는 중소기업 지원을 활발히 하여 세계선도 중소기업을 육성할 수 있을 것이다.

우리나라 기업의 산업표준 획득과 기술개발과의 관계 (The Relationship between Industrial Standards Acquisition and the Technological Development of Korean Enterprises)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify in two aspects the relationship between standardization activities and technological development at the firm level. The first aspect is to analyze the relationship between the current Korean industrial standards system and the firm's technological development vis-a-vis quality standards. The analysis reveals that even if Korean firms recognize the importance of standards, the level of product quality of the KS mark is still lower compared to the average world level. The survey also reveals that the reasons for acquiring ISO and KS marks are mainly aimed at enforcing company image and increasing quality management mind, rather than to foster technological innovation. The second aspect explores how much Korean industrial standards (KS marks) affect the firm's technological development in the Process of standards acquisition activities. The survey results show that standardization activities have a less positive impact on technological innovation than on the maintenance of consistent production works.

Effects of Embeddedness and Structural Holes on Innovation Performance: The Moderating Role of Environmental Uncertainty

  • Purpose: The ability of a firm to acquire resources through marketing networks is crucial for its competitiveness. Nonetheless, the influence of these networks on the performance of a firm's innovation is still uncertain, particularly in the face of environmental uncertainty. This research investigates the impact of marketing networks, specifically network embeddedness and structural holes, on the performance of innovation in situations characterized by environmental uncertainty. Research design, data and methodology: The empirical examination was carried out within the framework of internal network entities, specifically the manufacturer-supplier-sub supplier relationships, involving the primary suppliers of a Korean engineering firm. Construct measures utilized in this study were derived from existing measures and prior research. A questionnaire survey was conducted with a major first-tier supplier of a Korean engineering firm. Proposed hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. Results: The survey findings suggest that only network embeddedness has an impact on the perception of major first-tier suppliers regarding the buyer's innovation performance. Conclusions: To strengthen the empirical evidence regarding the effects of marketing networks on innovation performance, future research should take into account cultural factors such as collectivism, which is indicative of the distinctive business-to-business marketing relationships observed in the Korean context.

Networks and Innovative Performance of the Korean Manufacturing Firms

  • This paper estimates the effect of networks on innovative performance at the firm level , using Korean Innovation Survey (KIS) dataset Product innovation, product improvement , and process innovation are used as proxies for innovative activity. The explanatory variables such as firm size, market concentration ratio, lagged profitability, foreign ownership, export ratio, firm's age, formal R&D activity, and industrial R&D intensity are yet other considerations. With two year-long (2000 and 2001) data from 1,124 Korean manufacturing firms, we estimated the logistic regression model. The research finding indicates that the external networks have a strong positive effect on innovative output regardless of type of innovation. However, the network effects by partner (other firms or research institutions) vary across the type of innovation. Especially, we found that the user-supplier linkage plays an important role in product ion innovation, product improvement, and process innovation.

제조업 기업의 기술혁신 형태와 결정요인 : 기업규모와 기술혁신 (Firm Size and Innovation : A Probit Analysis)

  • This study empirically investigates innovative behaviors of the firm. In so doing, a Probit was employed and estimated. We used the raw data of the "corporate innovation survey"(CIS), which, in consent with OECD efforts, is regularly undertaken by the Science and Technology Policy Institute(SIEPI). The data set includes more than 3400 firms in the manufacturing sector. Three types of innovation, i.e., new product, product improvement and process innovation, are studied, assuming that determinants of innovation are firm′s age. number of employees as the size of firm, ratio of foreign ownership and innovation costs. To investigate the relationship between firm′s innovation behavior and the size, we estimate the Probit including the quadratic term of the firm size. Empirical findings showed that the sign of the quadratic term of the firm size turned out to be negative. It means that the probability of firm's making innovation shows the inversed-U relationship with the firm size. Such an empirical result may have a significant implication for the industrial policy.

  • A key factor of competitiveness of a firm is technology innovation including product and process innovation. This paper explores the importance and performance of innovation in IT industry across manufacturing and service business. Using importance-performance analysis based on a survey of Korean manufacturing and service firms, we find the characteristics of innovation in IT under the context of industry difference. Out study indicate that Korean IT firms need to recognize the importance of technology innovation and enhance the performance in some areas. In future research, we will expand the boundary of innovation into non-technology innovation as well as service-specific innovation.

Government Support Mechanisms and Open Innovation: An Empirical Look at Korean Manufacturing Firms

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine how a broad palette of government support measures and firms' membership in government-developed clusters are related to firms' openness in innovation processes. Design/methodology/approach - Empirically, this study analyzes the Korea Innovation Survey 2018 data on the innovation activities of 1,450 Korean R&D-active manufacturing firms in a three-year period from 2015 through 2017. Findings - The results suggest that firms engage in open innovation to a greater extent--as measured by the breadth of external collaborating partners and of the utilized external sources of knowledge--when they are provided with a broader palette of government support measures and are located in government-developed clusters. However, the effect of diverse government support measures is attenuated for firms located in these clusters. Research implications or Originality - This study contributes to the innovation literature by illuminating how firms' open innovation can be understood in a national innovation system. Moreover, it provides valuable implications for firms seeking to obtain government support and collaborate with others.

The Effect of Interactivity between KIBS Firms and Customers on Innovations in KIBS Firms

  • In today's dynamic and hypercompetitive business environment, knowledge and innovation have emerged as bases for sustained competitive advantage. This paper addresses two specific research questions. First, we ask, "What is the effect that firm interactivity has on various types of innovation?" As we address this question, we explain that interactivity helps firms create knowledge, which then promotes and enables innovation. Second, we ask, "How do the various types of innovation impact firm performance?" We develop a research model and a set of hypotheses from the basis of organizational knowledge creation theory and the knowledge-based view of the firm. We test this model using survey data, and find that interactivity is positively associated with innovation. We also find that several types of innovation, including service innovation, process innovation, and organizational innovation have a positive impact on firm performance.

과학기술연구개발활동조사의 개선방안 -기업부문을 중심으로- (Policies for Improving the Survey of Research and Development in Science and Technology: The Case of Industrial Sector)

  • The survey of research and development (R&D) in science and technology (S&T) covers the current status of R&D activities in S&T in Korea, and provides a basis for decision making regarding S&T policy. Continuous improvement of the survey is widely needed to present reliable national basic statistics. Therefore, the purpose of the study is two-fold: to introduce sampling survey method in industrial sector and to make statistical technique to deal with non-response data from industrial sector. To these ends, first, case studies of the United States and Japan are illustrated. A new sampling design for the R&D survey is proposed and implementing stratified random sampling scheme is suggested. Moreover, statistical analysis of the non-response data is dealt with. Based on several screening criteria, we develop a new imputation method suitable for the R&D survey and also provide more detailed implementation plan. Various solutions to a problem arising from non-response item are also presented. Finally, some implications of the results are discussed.

지역-산업 통합분류법에 의한 국내 기술체제 분석: 2016년 한국기업혁신조사 제조업 부문을 중심으로 (An Analysis of The Technological Regime by an Integrated Taxonomy of Region-Industry: Focusing on the Manufacturing Sector of the 2016 Korean Innovation Survey)

  • 본 연구는 혁신조사를 이용하여 기술체제를 파악하고 기업의 혁신활동 양상을 유형별로 분류하는 방법으로써 지역과 산업을 통합적으로 활용하는 방안을 제안한다. 기존의 연구는 기술체제의 구성요소에 따라 혁신활동을 판별하고 산업분류별로 이를 집계하는 방식을 사용해 왔으나 이러한 방식은 고도화되는 환경에서 산업 내 이질성을 충분히 반영할 수 없다. 이에 본 연구에서는 지역과 산업을 기준으로 기업군을 나눈 뒤 기술체제의 구성요소별 혁신활동 비중에 대한 군집분석을 수행하여 총 네 개의 혁신유형을 도출하였다. 2016년 한국기업혁신조사를 이용하여 제조업의 혁신유형을 분류한 결과 서울, 부산, 인천, 충남/세종/대전을 중심으로 혁신활동이 집중되는 가운데 지역별로 산업별 편차가 다르게 나타남을 확인하였다. 지역별 기업 활동을 가중치로 한 산업 혁신활동 집계 결과는 석유화학제품, 의료·정밀·광학기기 및 시계제조업 등 일부 제조업의 혁신활동 수준은 높지만 제조업 내 다른 부문에서의 혁신 수준은 전반적으로 낮은 것으로 나타났다.
