  • The recent patent wars in the information technology (IT) industry demonstrate the strategic importance of IT patents in the industry. In this paper, we adopt the lens of real options to study the value of IT patents for IT firms. Specifically, we examine the relationship between IT patents and firms' market performance. We also consider the moderating effect of the innovation orientation of firms' patent portfolios (exploitative vs. explorative). Based on a large panel dataset consisting of 697 firms in US IT industries, our results suggest that the impact of IT patents on firm value (as measured by Tobin's q) is positive and significant. Further, we find that this impact varies, depending on the innovation orientation of firms' patent portfolios. IT patent portfolios with higher levels of an exploitative orientation are associated with higher firm value, compared to those with a lower exploitative orientation. This study highlights the value of employing real options theory as the underlying mechanism in understanding the impact of patents on firm valuation. Future researchers can adopt the real options lens to identify and empirically examine the role of other factors that may affect the value of patents and other investments exhibiting real option characteristics. While our paper answers some questions about the value of patents in the IT industry, it also raises a number of additional new questions. As such, we hope that it will generate more research on this important topic.

  • In this paper, factors affecting intra-organizational diffusion of Big Data systems from the perspective of the Big Data system vendors have been analyzed. In particular, the theory of resistance against innovation that exists in some form before the adoption or rejection of innovation has been focused on. In order to do that, the resistance has been divided into three categories : postponement, rejection and opposition. The variables affecting each type are also divided into four independent variables : perceived risk, innovation characteristics, user attributes, and organizational attributes. As a result of the survey, it was confirmed that the influences of each variable are different according to the type of resistance. As the strength of the resistance was increased, the influence of the trialability was increased as well. As the strength of the resistance was decreased, the satisfaction with the existing system became more influential on the resistance. The time risk and the satisfaction with the existing system were found to affect all types of resistance. From the vendor's point of view, strategic implications are presented in terms of marketing or system development for diffusion, depending on the degree of resistance of the adopter.

  • Regional innovation and cluster policies are the new agenda of regional policy, an agenda that began to spread over recent years throughout different countries and regions. In this context, our main question arises: how are we going to evaluate regional innovation and cluster policies? What models and methods are we going to use? Since 1990, regional and national governments have put more emphasis on evaluation as a tool directed to produce knowledge to design better policies. The objective of this article is to summarise the main challenges arising from the evaluation of regional innovation and cluster policies and make some methodological proposals that can contribute to produce better evaluations. In the first section, there is a brief presentation of regional innovation and cluster policies, followed by a more detailed analysis, in the second section, of their principal characteristics and of the main challenges posed by their evaluation. In the third section, some evaluation proposals that can help to improve current evaluation practice are presented. The paper concludes with a short number of general recommendations that we should bear in mind when designing an evaluation of regional innovation and cluster policies.

  • This article discusses the innovation activities of firms that aim for system transformation from the perspective of 'Transformative Innovation Policies'. Here, for the sustainable transformation of our society, a firm that finds the 'purpose' of business activities in solving social problems and implements a new business model is defined as a 'transition-oriented firm'. The main characteristics of a transition-oriented firm are examined in terms of 1) transition vision and mission setting, 2) business model innovation for transition, 3) network formation for system transition, and 4) securing legitimacy of transition. And through case studies, the approach, significance, and limitations of the transition-oriented corporate innovation theory are discussed. The case study is from a Eisai Korea, which aims for an integrated prevention, treatment, and care system centered on residents and citizens.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore consumption status of scented textile products and to determine differences in consumption behaviors of scented textile products among subject groups separated by demographic (sex, age) and lifestyle (health concern, fashion involvement, innovativenss) characteristics. A total of 530 consumers who had used scented textile products participated in the web survey for the study. Consumer data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, chi-square test, factor analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and LSD test. In the results, the most often used products were small commodities, socks, bedding, and underwear of hub and flower scents. Consumers considered a product test as the most crucial information source and scent as the most significant decision making factor for purchase. Demographic and lifestyle group differences were found in some of the product types in use as well as in purchase behaviors (total spending amount, purchase venue, information source, considering factors when purchasing). The applicability of the study result to the theory of innovation adoption was discussed. Marketing implications were suggested based on the study results.

  • Purpose - This study uses the 'Galapagos Effect' theory proposed by Japanese researchers to investigate if there is a basis for applying the theory to South Korea, specifically in the High-Tech Service area. Research Design, Data, and Methodology - The underlying characteristics of Japanese business environment that led to the Galapagos Effect are identified, and then Korea is investigated to see if these characteristics are also evident. The case studies of three South Korean companies are explored to see if they can be considered as examples of the Galapagos Effect Results - The findings illustrate that some evidence for the existence of the Galapagos Effect does exist in Korean companies, but more research is required to systemize the phenomenon. Conclusions - The study concludes that proactive measures at a Government and business level should be implemented to mitigate the effects of the Galapagos Effect in Korea. The existence of evidence suggests that there may be grounds for more comprehensive studies in order to try and make a generalization. In addition, more study needs to be done to establish exactly which kinds of high-tech service companies are most likely to hit barriers due to the Galapagos Effect as it is not clear from the existing evidence.

  • This study aims to explore factors of Assimilation Gap(AG) which is proposed and illustrated by Fichman and Kemerer(1997). AG is defined as the time delay between adoption and deployment and mainly studied at the organizational level. This study derives the factor affecting AG through a review of technology acceptance models and agency theory. The research model consists of three groups of independent variables(IT knowledge burden, Individual characteristics, and organization characteristics) and a moderator, which is goal incongruence. Using multiple regression analyses, four groups of hypotheses are tested with data of 221 knowledge workers from various organizations through e-mail survey. The result shows that radicalness(a dimension of knowledge burden), personal innovativeness, self-efficacy, and organizational support are statistically significant factors while complexity, experience, and perceived critical mass are not supported. The moderator effects of goal incongruence are found in personal innovativeness and organizational support. The results of this study demonstrate that agency theory is a useful perspective to deal with AG, especially in radical innovation. In addition, IT practitioners should consider not only user training but also incentives and possible organizational controls in implementing a new information technology.

  • In the 1970s, the term Post - Modernism came into use to lable work of graphic design who broke up the Swiss style that had defined clarity and order. The characteristics of Post - Modernism graphic design include pluralistic and eclectic style. Those innovation of graphic design concerned with our social, political. cultural, and econonic changes. Deconstruction is one of the theory of Post-structualism. Deconstruction refers to the breaking down of metaphysics, rationalism, totality and so on. Deconstructive graphic design destroys traditional harmony even more than Marinetti's claim. Totality in graphic design seems to be ignored. Post - Modernism in architecture appears as historical revivalism and pluralism. The eclectic revivals and eccentric reinventions in graphic design are far too pluralistic and diverse to fit such as a simplistic system of style. Another innovation in graphic design occurs by electronic revolution. The impact of computer upon graphic design is becoming even more pronounced. Most importantly, Post-Modernism can consider the rediscovered freedom in graphic design. Graphic design is undergoing profound changes. But the essence of graphic design as com$$\mu$ication tools will remain unchanged.

  • Having the characteristics of public goods, Radio Spectrum had been controlled by Government Authorities. In the past, technological side of spectrum, such as cross protection, was the main concern, but as the telecommunication industry is developing gradually, economic side of spectrum is becoming an important part. To uplift the Economic efficiency of spectrum management policy, clarifying the basic value of spectrum is one of the most important things. Also, both government authorities and spectrum licensees will have to choose license or investment under uncertainties such as license timing, time to market, technology standard, and so on. Considering all things, this paper gives the value to the spectrum by real options theory, which is a powerful method concerning uncertainty, especially for government, And we applied it to a specific spectrum band for the portable Internet in Korea. These results can provide information about the technological standard, optimal market-entry time as well as the value of spectrum for the portable Internet.

  • The researches on cyclical patterns of R&D investment has a long history in developed economies since the Schumpeterian hypothesis that long-term productivity-enhancing innovative activities increase during recession. But in Korea the cyclical patterns of R&D investment is one of the unexplored academic areas. Unlike theoretical explanation of R&D's cyclical pattern, empirical results has shown that R&D investment is procyclical to business cycles in developed countries. This paper investigates whether Korean R&D investment show procyclical or countercyclical pattern to business cycles. The empirical results show that Korean R&D investment in private area is procyclical to business cycles with statistical significance, which confirms the credit-constraint theory's prediction, while public area's is not sensitive to them. Public R&D investment has long-term investment characteristics and can be utilized to stabilize procyclically-fluctuating private R&D investment.
