  • This study concerns the performance of boiling heat transfer in two-phase closed thermosyphons with various helical grooves. Distilled water, methanol, ethanol have been used as the working fluids. In the present work, a copper tube of the length of 1200 mm and 14.28 mm of inside diameter is used as the container of the thermosyphon. Each of the evaporator and the condenser section has a length of 550 mm, while the remaining part of the thermosyphon tube is adiabatic section. A experimental study was carried out for analyzing the Performances of having 50, 60, 70, 80 and 50 helical grooves. A Plain thermosyphon having the same inner and outer diameter as the grooved thermosyphons is also tested for comparison. The type of working fluid and the numbers of grooves of the thermosyphons with various helical grooves have been used as the experimental parameters. The experimental results have been assessed and compared with existing theories. The results show that the number of grooves and the type of working fluids are very important factors for the operation of thermosyphons. The helical grooved thermosyphons having 50 to 60 grooves in water, 60 to 70 grooves in methanol and ethanol shows the best heat boiling heat transfer coefficient.

  • Background: Steam generator (SG) is one of the significant components in the nuclear steam supply system. A variety of SGs have been designed and used in nuclear reactor systems. Every SG has advantages and disadvantages. A brief account of some of the existing SG designs is presented in this study. A high surface to volume ratio of a SG is required in small modular reactors to occupy the least space. In this paper, performance improvement for SGs of integral small modular reactor is proposed. Aims/Methods: For this purpose, cross-grooved microfins have been incorporated on the inner surface of the helical tube to enhance heat transfer. The primary objective of this work is to investigate thermal-hydraulic behavior of the proposed improvements through modeling in RELAP5-3D. Results and Conclusions: The results are compared with helical-coiled SGs being used in IRIS (International Reactor Innovative and Secure). The results show that the tube length reduces up to 11.56% keeping thermal and hydraulic conditions fixed. In the case of fixed size, the steam outlet temperature increases from 590.1 K to 597.0 K and the capability of power transfer from primary to secondary also increases. However, these advantages are associated with some extra pressure drop, which has to be compensated.

  • An experimental study on evaporative heat transfer characteristics in micro-fin tubes before and after expansion process has been performed with R-22. Single-grooved micro-fin tubes with outer diameter of 9.52 mm were used as test sections, and it was uniformly heated by applying direct current to the test tubes. Experiments were conducted at mass flow rates of 20 and 30 kg/hr. For each mass flow rate condition, evaporation temperature was set at 5 and $15^{\circ}C$and heat flux was changed from 6 to 11 kW/$m^2$ The evaporative heat transfer coefficient of micro-fin tubes after expansion is decreased because of the crush of fins and enlargement of inner diameter compared to that before expansion. Convective boiling effect decreased remarkably at higher quality range in the micro-fin tube after expansion, and the difference of the heat transfer coefficient in micro-fin tubes before and after expansion was greater for higher quality region. The evaporative heat transfer coefficient of the micro-fin tube after expansion was 19.9% smaller on the average than that before expansion.

  • This study investigated heat transfer characteristics between absorber and heat pipe used to extract heat from concentric evacuated tubular collectors. In order to experiment, T-type thermocouples are attached to a evaporator of heat pipe and absorber of inner tube. A wall temperature distribution of absorber and heat pipe were carried out by experimental method under actual various ir-radiance and outdoor conditions. As a result, As to increase an irradiance, a wall temperature of absorber and heat pipe is gradually increased. The heat pipe was required about 20min to obtain steady state operation after start up and operates stable during various irradiance conditions. And the collector efficiency was about $50{\sim}70%$ when a mass flow rate is about $1.3{\ell}/min$.

  • The two-phase closed thermosyphon is a heat transfer device capable of transfer large quantities of heat from a source to a sink by taking advantage of the high heat transfer rates associated with the evaporation and condensation of a working fluid within the device. A study was carried out with the performance of the heat transfer of the thermosyphon having 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 internal micro grooves in which boiling and condensation occur. A plain thermosyphon having the same inner and outer diameter as the grooved thermosyphon is also tested for comparison. Water, methanol and ethanol have been used as the working fluids. The liquid filling as the ratio of working fluid volume to total volume of thermosyphon, the inclination angle, micro grooves and operating temperature have been used as the experimental parameters. The heat flux and the boiling and the condensation heat transfer coefficient and overall heat transfer coefficient at the condenser and evaporator zone are estimated from the experimental results. The experimental results have been assessed and compared with existing correlations. Imura's and Kusuda's correlation for boiling showed in good agreement with experimental results within ${\pm}20$% in plain thermosyphon. The maximum heat transfer rate was obtained when the liquid fill ratio was about 25%. The high heat transfer coefficient was found between 25o and 30o of inclination angle for water and between 20o and 25o for methanol and ethanol. The relatively high rates of heat transfer have been achieved in the thermosyphon with internal micro grooves. The micro grooved thermosyphon having 60 grooves shows the best heat transfer coefficient in both condensation and boiling. The maximum enhancement (i.e. the ratio of the heat transfer coefficients of the micro grooved thermosyphon to plain thermosyphon) is 2.5 for condensation and 2.3 for boiling.

In the present model, boiling of liquid pool in the evaporator is considered for the heat transfer mechanism of the thermosyphon. And also the effects of the number of grooves, the operating temperature, the heat flux are brought into consideration. A good agreement between the boiling heat transfer coefficient of the thermosyphon estimated from experimental results and the predictions from the present mathematical model is obtained. The experimental results show that the number of grooves and the amount of the working fluid are very important factors for the operation of thermosyphons. The two-phase closed thermosyphon with copper tubes having 60 internal grooves shows the best boiling heat transfer performance.
