  • The position of propeller fan from duct inlet is one of basic parameters for the design of propeller fan. To investigate the effect of its position on fan characteristics, the inlet flow fields and relative flow angles were measured by a 5-hole pitot tube. The experimental results indicate that the ratio of radial flow introduced from propeller circumference to total inlet flow increases with the increase of propeller distance from duct inlet. When fan operates without duct, the total flow rate and the radial flow ratio are higher than those of any other positions of propeller relative to duct inlet. The radial flow ratio decreases as a flow coefficient and the propeller distance decrease. Therefore the front flow fields can be adjusted in some extent by varying the propeller distance according to a fan loading. The inlet flow angles are decreasing a little as a rotational speed and the propeller distance decrease. In the present case it was judged that the deviation angle of outlet flow became negative owing to a flow separation near a trailing edge.

  • This paper is the second of 2 companion papers which investigate in-cylinder swirl generation characteristics according to inlet valve angle. Two DOHC 4 valve engines, one has wide intake valve angle and the other has narrow valve angle, were used to compare the characteristics of swirl motion generation in the cylinder. One intake port was deactivated to induce swirl flow. A PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) was applied to measure in-cylinder velocity field according to inlet valve angle during intake stroke. The results show that the flow patterns of narrow valve engine are much more stable and well arranged compared with the normal engine over the entire intake and compression stroke except early intake stage, and very strong swirl motion is generated at the end of compression stage in this engine nevertheless using straight port which is unfavorable for swirl generating. In the wide valve angle one, however, strong swirl motion induced during intake stroke is destroyed as the compression progresses.

  • Flow distribution and pressure drop analysis for an inlet plenum of a Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) have been performed using Computational Fluid Dynamics. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations have been solved in conjunction with $k-{\epsilon}$ model as a turbulence closure. Non-uniformity in flow distribution is assessed for the reference case and parametric studies have been performed for rising channels diameter, Reynolds number and angle between the inlet ports. Also, two different shapes of the inlet plenum namely, rectangular shape and oval shape, have been analysed. The relative flow mal-distribution parameter shows that the flow distribution in the rising channels for the reference case is strongly non-uniform. As the rising channels diameter decreases, the uniformity in the flow distribution as well as the pressure drop inside the inlet plenum increases. Reynolds number is found to have no effect on the flow distribution in the rising channels for both the shapes of the inlet plenum. The increase in angle between the inlet ports makes the flow distribution in the rising channels more uniform.

  • In the present study, the heat and flow characteristics of a parallel-flow heat exchanger are numerically analyzed by using three-dimensional turbulent modeling. Heat transfer rate and pressure drop are evaluated using the concept of the efficiency index by varying the locations, the shapes and angles of inlet/outlet, and the protrusion height of flat tube. It is found that negative angle of the inlet improves the heat transfer rate and pressure drop. Results show that the locations of the inlet and outlet should be toward the right side and the left side to the reference model, respectively, in order to enhance the heat transfer rate and pressure drop. Increasing the height of the lower header causes pressure drop to decrease and yields the good flow characteristics. The lower protrusion height of flat tube shows the improvement of the heat transfer rate and pressure drop. The heat transfer rate is greatly affected by the parameters of outlet side such as the location and angle of the outlet. However, the pressure drop is influenced by the parameters of inlet side such as the location and angle of inlet and the height of the header.

  • Three-dimensional flow characteristics in a liquid fuel ramjet combustor were investigated using the PIV method. The combustor has two rectangular inlets that loin a 90-degree angle each other. Three cases of test combustors are made in which those inlet angles are 30 degree, 45degree and 60 degree. The experiments were performed in a water tunnel test with the same Reynolds number as Mach 0.3 at the inlet. PIV software was developed to measure the characteristics of the flow field in the combustor. Accuracy of the developed PIV program was verified with a rotating disk experiment and standard data. The characteristics of the internal flows of the combustor are large swirling flows which appear symmetric with respect to the symmetric section. This is attributed to the fact that the flows introduced from the right and left intakes collide with each other, thus forming symmetrically large vortices. A large and complex three-dimensional recirculating flow was measured behind the intakes. An inlet angle of 30 degrees is the most suitable angle as a frame he]der in the performed experimental ranges.

  • In order to improve the performance of cross-flow hydro turbine, detailed examination of the effect of the turbine configuration on the performance is needed necessarily. Therefore, this study is aimed to investigate the effect of blade angle on the performance of the cross-flow hydro turbine. Analysis of the turbine performance with the variation of the blade angle has been made by using a commercial CFD code. The results show that inlet and outlet angles of runner blade give considerable effect on the performance of the turbine. Pressure on the surface of the runner blade changes remarkably by the blade angle both at the Stages 1 and 2. Moreover, relatively small blade inlet angle is effective to produce higher value of output power. Recirculating flow in the runner passage causes remarkable hydraulic loss.

  • A numerical simulation of brushless DC motor is performed to elucidate thermo-flow characteristics in winding and bearing with heat generation. Rotation of rotor and blades drives influx of ambient air into the rotor inlet. Recirculation zone exists in the tiny interfaces between windings. The flow separation causes poor cooling performance in bearing part and therefore the redesign of the bearing groove is required. The design parameters such as the inlet location, geometry and bearing groove threshold angle have been selected in the present simulation. As the inlet location moves inward in the radial direction, total incoming flow rate and heat transfer rate are increased. Total incoming flow rate is increased with increasing the inlet inner length. The effect of the bearing groove threshold angle on the thermal performance is less than that of other design parameters.

  • Effects of Injector nozzle geometry and operating pressure conditions such as opening pressure, ambient pressure. and injection pressure on the transient fuel spray behavior have been examined by experiments. In order to clarify the effect of internal flow inside nozzle on the external spray, flow details Inside model nozzle and real nozzle were alto investigated both experimentally and numerically. for the effect of injection pressures, droplet sizes and velocities were obtained at maximum line pressure of 21 MPa and 105 MPa. Droplet sizes produced from the round inlet nozzle were larger than those from the sharp inlet nozzle and the spray angle of the round inlet nozzle was narrower than that from the sharp inlet nozzle. With the increase of opening pressure, spray tip penetration and spray angle were increased at both lower ambient pressure and higher ambient pressure. The velocity and size profiles maintained similarity despite of the substantial change in injection pressure, however, the increased injection pressure produced a higher percentage of droplet that are likely to breakup.

PIV software was developed to measure the characteristics of the flow field in the combustor. A large and complex recirculating flow was measured in the dome area with 4 different dome size. Experimental results shows that 1/3 dome size of combustor diameter is suitable and smaller inlet angle provide large recirculation flow at the dome of combustor as a frame holder in this experimental ranges but need to consider secondary recirculation flow in a junction region to optimize the configuration of ramjet combustor.

  • Vacuum pump transfers waste that is pulverized by integrated macerator. For this reason, unlike ordinary pump systems, there is a rotating macerator ahead of impeller for pulverizing. It is hard to predict numerical solution because area of Inlet flow path changes according to the rotation angle of the integrated macerator. So, in this study, the verification of performance evaluation method of Marine vacuum pump were numerically studied by commercial ANSYS CFX 13.0 software. We select a model of performance evaluation for study, and we analyze change of inlet flow path of integrated macerator according to rotation angle. We generate 5 model sets according to rotation angle of the integrated macerator. And we evaluate their performance by numerical analysis. Then, we analyze internal flow field and performance according to rotation angle of the integrated macerator based on numerical analysis result. In addition, we compared with experimental data for validity of numerical result by using steady state analysis.
