Flush inlet, which has been chosen for modem air vehicles to take advantage of structure compactness and small RCS, gives rise to some aerodynamic problems such as flow separation and distortion due to vortices which deteriorate the performance of both inlet and engine. In this study, pressure recoveries at inlet exit plane were evaluated through numerical analyses of 3D turbulent flow for various inlet shapes and flight conditions. Inlet shape was controlled by changing ramp angle and width of throat, and effects of mass flow rate and angle of attack were investigated.
It is absolutely necessary to measure the inlet pressure and temperature of a turbine or a compressor to evaluate the performance of it. And to measure the representative-averaged pressure and temperature of turbine inlet flow, rake is normally used. Rake has several elements for temperature and pressure and several rakes are installed at the inlet to average the radial and circumferential distribution of inlet flow. However the rakes cause unexpected losses and flow distortion at the turbine inlet which make the measured rake data different from true inlet value. So the evaluation of a turbine or a compressor performance becomes not accurate. This study suggest a correlation method which measure the loss by inlet rake and incorporates it in evaluating the performance of turbomachinery.
Purpose: Methods: Three-dimensional CFD modeling was conducted to analyze the flow structure and discharge flow rate corresponding to the variation in the geometry of the flow channel in a microtube. Additionally, experiments were carried out, and the discharge flow rate was measured at various inlet pressures and inclination angles of the microtube. Results: The quantitative data of velocity distribution and discharge flow rate were obtained. As the width and length of the microtip increased, the discharge flow rate decreased significantly because of the increase in the loss of pressure along the microtube. As the depth of the microtip increased, the flow rate also increased because of the reduction in the flow resistance. However, in this analysis, the variation in the angle of the microtip did not influence the flow rate. From the experimental results, it was observed that the flow rate increased linearly with the increase in the inlet pressure, and the effects of the inclination angle were not clearly observed in those test cases. The values of the flow rate obtained from the experiments were significantly lower than that obtained from the CFD analysis. This is because of the distortion of the shape of the flow path inside the microtube during the fabrication process. The distortion of the flow path might decrease the flow cross-sectional area, and it would increase the flow resistance inside the microtube. The variation in the flow rate corresponding to the variation in the inlet pressure showed similar trends. Conclusions: Therefore, the results of the numerical analysis obtained from this study can be efficiently utilized for optimizing the shape of the microtip inside a microtube.

In this study, the affect of mounting axisymmetrical supersonic inlet to airfoil, which has 65 degree swept angle was numerically investigated. The parameter for this calculation are tree stream Mach number M=2.0 and 2.5, the distance between inlet spike and airfoil lower surface $L_{sw}$/$R_{cowl}$ = 1.21-1.54 and angle of attack to the airfoil 0-4. The mass capture ratio improved 3points in M=2.0 condition and 1points in M=2.5 while the mass capture ratio without airfoil surface was 57% and 71 % for each case. These are the result from increase of density and change of velocity deflection by the shock wave structure formed between inlet and airfoil surface. On the other hand, the distortion of Mach number at cowl lip plane increased by 13% in M=2.0, 3% in M=2.5 condition. The effects of the angle attack on the mass capture ratio is greater than that of the shock wave interaction between inlet and cowl, but the effects to the distortion is smaller in the range of this calculation condition. In the condition of M=2.0 with 4 degrees of angle of attack, inlet distortion of Mach number is mainly caused by the affects of the shock wave interaction between inlet and airfoil surface, while the largest angle of the velocity vector in the radial direction at cowl lip plane is caused by the affect of angle of attack. This large velocity vector made the flow inside the cowl subsonic and caused spillage, which interfere with the boundary layer of airfoil surface.

A series of numerical simulations are carried out to analyze a supersonic inlet buzz, which is an unsteady pressure oscillation phenomenon around a supersonic inlet. A simple but efficient geometry, experimentally adopted by Nagashima, is chosen for the analysis of unsteady flow physics. Among the two sets of simulations considered in this study, the effects of various throttling conditions are firstly examined. It is seen that the major physical characteristic of the inlet buzz can be obtained by inviscid computations only and the computed flow patterns inside and around the inlet are qualitatively consistent with the experimental observations. The dominant frequency of the inlet buzz increases as throttle area decreases, and the computed frequency is approximately 60Hz or 15% lower than the experimental data, but interestingly, this gap is constant for all the test cases and shock structures are similar. Secondly, inviscid calculations are performed to examine the effect regarding angle of attack. It is found that patterns of pressure oscillation histories and distortion due to asymmetric (or three-dimensional) shock structures are substantially affected by angle of attack. The dominant frequency of the inlet buzz, however, does not change noticeably even in regards to a wide range of angle of attacks.

The attachment of inducer in front of main impeller is a powerful method to improve cavitation performance. Cavitation surge oscillation, however, often occurs at partial flow rate and extremely low suction pressure. As the cavitation surge oscillation with low frequency of about 10 Hz occurs in a close relation between the inlet backflow cavitation and the growth of blade cavity into the throat section of blade passage, one method of installing an axi-asymmetrical plate upstream of inducer has been proposed to suppress the oscillation. The inlet flow distortion due to the axi-asymmetrical plate makes different elongations of cavities on all blades, which prevent the flow from becoming simultaneously unstable at all throat sections. In the present study, changes of the suppression effects with the axial distance between the inducer inlet and the plate and the changes with the blockage ratios of plate area to the cross-sectional area of inducer inlet are investigated for helical inducers with tip blade angles of $8^{\circ}$ and $14^{\circ}$. Then a conceivable application will be proposed to suppress the cavitation surge oscillation by installing axi-asymmetrical inlet plate.
Pressure characteristics according to the duct shapes of turbo blowers connected in serial have been performed to reduce pressure loss in the piping system. To analyze three-dimensional flow field in the turbo blower system, general analysis code, CFX, is introduced in the present work. SST turbulence model is applied to estimate the eddy viscosity. Throughout the numerical simulation for the turbo blower system having a various shape of a inlet guide, optimal inlet guide can be selected. It is found that the pressure loss in the piping system having the optimal inlet guide can be reduced by minimizing the inflow distortion at the upstream of the impeller. Detailed flow analysis of the blower system serially connected is also performed and analyzed.

Aircraft needs an inlet duct to supply the airflow to engine face. A fighter aircraft that requires low radar observability has to hide the engine face in the fuselage to reduce the Radar Cross Section(RCS). Therefore, the flow path of the inlet duct is changed into S-shape. The performance of the aircraft engine is known to be influenced by the shape and the centerline curvature of the S-Duct. In this study, CFD analysis of the RAE M 2129 S-Duct has been performed to investigate the influence of aspect ratio of inlet geometry. The performance of the S-Duct is evaluated in terms of the distortion coefficient. To simulate the flow under adverse pressure gradient better, $k-{\omega}SST$ turbulence model is employed. The computational results are validated with the ARA experimental data. The secondary flow and the flow separation are observed for all computational cases, while the semi-circular geometry has been found to produce the best results.
Air intakes are an essential component of aircraft engines. They are mainly used to offer uniform airflows to engine faces. Fighter aircraft have to mask the engine face inside the fuselage in order to reduce the Radar Cross Section(RCS). Therefore, offset intakes like a S-Duct are one of promising components for this purpose. During a fight, it is unavoidable that the flow will enter the intakes at some face angles other than zero. In this case, the performance of the aircraft engine will be influenced to the angle of incidence. In this study, the CFD analysis of the semi-circular S-Duct with AR(0.5,0) is performed to investigate the influence of the angle of incidence on the performance of the S-Duct using a distortion coefficient. To consider the adverse pressure gradient, a $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model is employed. The secondary flow and flow separation are observed for all computational cases. It is found that the positive incidence angle produces the best performances.
The developing Smart UAV in KARI supposes high speed flight as like a conventional plane, as well as vertical takeoff and landing as like a helicopter. Therefore, the air intake system should be designed to provide the sufficient air flow to the engine and the maximum possible total pressure recovery at the engine intake screen over a wide range of flight conditions. For this purpose, we designed the intake system using a pitor type intake model and plenum chamber. In this paper, we designed the intake model and analyzed the performance of designed intake system using the general-purpose commercial CFD code, CFD-ACE+. The analysis results of the total pressure variation and the velocity distribution were illustrated in this paper. The pressure recovery and distortion coefficient at a plane coincident with the compressor inlet were calculated and streamline variation through the intake system was investigated at the worst flight condition as well as the standard flight condition.
