An numerical investigation of the flow characteristics inside a diffusing S-duct inlet with and without vortex generators(VGs) was conducted. The primary discussion herein focuses on development of secondary flow in the S-duct with and without VGs, pressure recovery and distortion at the exit are also discussed. Full three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are solved using finite volume method and $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model is employed. In order to validate the credibility of the numerical methods, predicted results of surface pressure are compared with flight test for the S-duct inlet without VGs, and it shows fairly good agreement. The result shows that VGs alter the flow characteristics in the S-duct and are effective in reducing distortion and ineffective in improving pressure recovery.
Performance characteristics of an axial flow fan having distorted inlet flow have been investigated using numerical analysis as well as experiment. Two kinds of hub-cap, round shape and right-angled front shape, are tested to investigate the effect of inlet flow distortion on the fan performance. In case of right-angled front shape, axisymmetric distorted inflow is induced by flow separation at the sharp edge of hub-cap, and the characteristics of the inflow depends on the distance between hub-cap and blade leading edge. Flow analysis of the blade passage is peformed by solving the three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. numerical solutions are validated in comparison with experimental data measured by a five-hole probe downstream of the fan rotor. It is found from the numerical results that non-uniform axial inlet velocity profile near the hub results in the change of inlet flowangle. The changed inlet flow angle near the hub invokesa flow separation on the blade surfaces, thus deteriorating the fan efficiency. The effect of the distance between hub-cap and blade leading edge on the efficiency is also discussed.

A series of numerical simulations are carried out to analyze a supersonic inlet buzz, which is an unsteady pressure oscillation phenomenon around a supersonic inlet. A simple but efficient geometry, experimentally adopted by Nagashima, is chosen for the analysis of unsteady flow physics. Among the two sets of simulations considered in this study, the effects of various throttling conditions are firstly examined. It is seen that the major physical characteristic of the inlet buzz can be obtained by inviscid computations only and the computed flow patterns inside and around the inlet are qualitatively consistent with the experimental observations. The dominant frequency of the inlet buzz increases as throttle area decreases, and the computed frequency is approximately 60Hz or 15% lower than the experimental data, but interestingly, this gap is constant for all the test cases and shock structures are similar. Secondly, inviscid calculations are performed to examine the effect regarding angle of attack. It is found that patterns of pressure oscillation histories and distortion due to asymmetric (or three-dimensional) shock structures are substantially affected by angle of attack. The dominant frequency of the inlet buzz, however, does not change noticeably even in regards to a wide range of angle of attacks.
Flush inlet, which has been chosen for modem air vehicles to take advantage of structure compactness and small RCS, gives rise to some aerodynamic problems such as flow separation and distortion due to vortices which deteriorate the performance of both inlet and engine. In this study, pressure recoveries at inlet exit plane were evaluated through numerical analyses of 3D turbulent flow for various inlet shapes and flight conditions. Inlet shape was controlled by changing ramp angle and width of throat, and effects of mass flow rate and angle of attack were investigated.
It is absolutely necessary to measure the inlet pressure and temperature of a turbine or a compressor to evaluate the performance of it. And to measure the representative-averaged pressure and temperature of turbine inlet flow, rake is normally used. Rake has several elements for temperature and pressure and several rakes are installed at the inlet to average the radial and circumferential distribution of inlet flow. However the rakes cause unexpected losses and flow distortion at the turbine inlet which make the measured rake data different from true inlet value. So the evaluation of a turbine or a compressor performance becomes not accurate. This study suggest a correlation method which measure the loss by inlet rake and incorporates it in evaluating the performance of turbomachinery.
Performance characteristics of an axial flow fan having distorted inlet flow have been investigated using numerical analysis as well as experiment. Two kinds of hub-cap, rounded and right-angled front shape, are tested to investigate the effect of inlet flow distortion on the fan performance. Numerical solutions are validated in comparison with experimental data measured by a five-hole probe downstream of the fan rotor. It is found from the numerical results that non-uniform axial inlet velocity profile near the hub results in the change of inlet flow angle. Large recirculation flow upstream the fan rotor for the right-angled hub-cap induces a negative incidence, thus invokes separated flow on the blade surfaces and deteriorates the performance of fan rotor.

The attachment of inducer in front of main impeller is a powerful method to improve cavitation performance. Cavitation surge oscillation, however, often occurs at partial flow rate and extremely low suction pressure. As the cavitation surge oscillation with low frequency of about 10 Hz occurs in a close relation between the inlet backflow cavitation and the growth of blade cavity into the throat section of blade passage, one method of installing an axi-asymmetrical plate upstream of inducer has been proposed to suppress the oscillation. The inlet flow distortion due to the axi-asymmetrical plate makes different elongations of cavities on all blades, which prevent the flow from becoming simultaneously unstable at all throat sections. In the present study, changes of the suppression effects with the axial distance between the inducer inlet and the plate and the changes with the blockage ratios of plate area to the cross-sectional area of inducer inlet are investigated for helical inducers with tip blade angles of $8^{\circ}$ and $14^{\circ}$. Then a conceivable application will be proposed to suppress the cavitation surge oscillation by installing axi-asymmetrical inlet plate.
Pressure characteristics according to the duct shapes of turbo blowers connected in serial have been performed to reduce pressure loss in the piping system. To analyze three-dimensional flow field in the turbo blower system, general analysis code, CFX, is introduced in the present work. SST turbulence model is applied to estimate the eddy viscosity. Throughout the numerical simulation for the turbo blower system having a various shape of a inlet guide, optimal inlet guide can be selected. It is found that the pressure loss in the piping system having the optimal inlet guide can be reduced by minimizing the inflow distortion at the upstream of the impeller. Detailed flow analysis of the blower system serially connected is also performed and analyzed.

In many military aircraft, s-shaped diffusers are used to prevent the fan blades of the turbofan engine from being exposed to the outside. The inlet configurations of the air intakes for military aircraft vary, such as the rectangular intake of the F-22, the crescent-like intake of the F-16, elliptical intake of the MQ-25. In this study, the aerodynamic performance of s-shaped diffusers with various inlet configurations was evaluated using numerical analysis. In addition, the configuration of the middle section of an s-shape duct was changed to the crescent shape, and the effects on its aerodynamic performance were investigated. As a result, there was a slight difference in total pressure recovery according to various inlet configurations with ellipse-shaped middle sections. Also, the total pressure distortion was the lowest in the rectangular inlet shape. When the configuration of the middle section was changed from an ellipse to a crescent shape, the total pressure recovery remained at a high level, except for the ellipse-shaped inlet configuration. In terms of total pressure distortion, the duct with the crescent-shaped middle section showed a significantly more uniform pressure distribution than that with the ellipse-shaped middle section.
