  • Seashore landfill projects use undersea pump dredging method for construction of airport and factory site. Coarse grain soil from the dredging is considered for use at inland. West sea shore bottom consists of primarily coarser grained silt-sand and this component contains far more percentage than is the case with East sea and South sea area. This soil shows very different characteristic at consolidation and compaction behavior. This research targets to utilize this type of dredging soil. Test specimen is from West sea (Saemangum) dredged soil landfill site. Model analysis is done for getting prediction of original soil relative density and N-value from dynamic compaction energy variance. Dynamic compaction energy is calculated for efficient foundation design.

  • In order to evaluate prevalence and perception on the intestinal trematodes of inhabitants at Docho-island, Shinan-gun, Chollanam-do, a questionnaire survey for the epidemiological study and stool examination for the detection of the eggs of the trematodes were done on 224 individuals at the island from January to February, 2000. The results were as follows: 1. Egg positive rate of the intestinal trematodes was 21.0%. 2. The egg positive rate has revealed significantly higher in the elderly over age 70 than other ages, higher in seashore villagers than inland ones, and higher in persons who had a rural and/or marine ph than persons with other jobs, respectively(P<0.05). 3. The egg positive rate of alcoholic drinkers was higher than non-alcoholic persons, and the rate was also higher in smokers than non-smokers. It was statistically significant(P<0.05). 4. The egg positive rate was shown to be significantly higher in inhabitants who ate raw mullet that was well known to be the source of infection with the intestinal trematodes than people who did not eat the raw marine fishes(P<0.01). 5. The egg positive rate was also significantly higher in humans who had the complaints of frequent abdominal pain and diarrhea than healthy people(P<0.05). In conclusion, the prevalence of intestinal trematodes at the island located in the south and west area in Korea was too high to eradicate the parasitic infections. So a special program is necessary for the control of the trematode infections in many adjacent islands at Chollanamdo.

  • Five representative reference evapotranspiration(RET) equations were selected, and these equations were compared with pan evaporation by correlation analysis. Pan coefficients were also estimated. Furthermore, five selected RET equations were compared to find the similarity among those at the 21 meteorological stations located in South Korea. Five RET equations selected from 4 different category were Penman(combination approach), FAO Penman-Monteith(FAO P-M) (single source approach), Makkink and Priestley-Taylor (radiation approach) and Hargreaves(temperature approach) equations. In this study, the geographical and topographical conditions were considered for the selection of study stations. The daily meteorological data measured from 1970 at an interval of 5 years were applied in this study. The evapotranspiration estimates obtained by applying evapotranspiration equations were evaluated with numerical and graphical methods. The correlation coefficients between pan evaporation and RET in study stations were above 0.9 indicating very high correlation; however, the slopes of the individual regression lines show the values greater or less than 1.0. Hargreaves equation(temperature approach) shows the most similar evapotranspiration estimates to those of FAO P-M equation from 12 study stations, which are located near to seashore except Daegu station. On the other hand, Priestley-Taylor equation(radiation approach) shows the most similar evapotranspiration estimates to those of FAO P-M equation from 8 study stations, which are located in inland.
