  • Pd-doped $SnO_2$ thick film with a pure tetragonal phase was prepared on patterned Pt electrodes by an ink dropping method. Nanostructured $SnO_2$ powder with a diameter of 10 nm was obtained by a modified hydrazine method. Then the ink solution was fabricated by mixing water, glycerol, bicine and the Pd-doped $SnO_2$ powder. When the Pd doping concentration was increased, the grain size of the Pd-doped $SnO_2$ thick film became smaller. However, an agglomerated and extruded surface morphology was observed for the films with Pd addition over 4 wt%. The orthorhombic phase disappeared even at a low Pd doping concentration and a PdO peak was obtained for a high Pd doping concentration. The crack-free Pd-doped $SnO_2$ thick films were able to successfully fill the $30{\mu}m$ gap of the patterned Pt electrodes by the optimized ink dropping method. The prepared 3 wt% Pd-doped $SnO_2$ thick films showed monoxide gas responses ($R_{air}/R_{CO}$) of 4.0 and 35.6 for 100 and 5000 ppm, respectively.

  • Inkjet printing technology is used to mass-produce displays and electrochemical sensors by dropping tens of pico-liters or less of specific-purpose ink through nozzles, just as ink is sprayed and printed on paper. Unlike the deposition method for vaporizing material in a vacuum, inkjet printing technology can be used for processing even under general atmospheric pressure and has a cost advantage because the material is dissolved in a solvent and used in the form of ink. In addition, because it can only be printed on the desired part, masks are not required. However, a technical shortcoming is the difficulty for commercialization, such as uniformity for forming the thickness and coffee ring effect. As sizes of devices decrease, the need to print electrodes with precision, thinness, and uniformity increases. In this study, we improved the printing and processing conditions to form a homogeneous electrode using Ag ink (DGP-45LT-15C) and applied this for patterning to fabricate a heat sensor. Upon the application of voltage to the heat sensor, the model with an extended width exhibited superior heat performance. However, in terms of sheet resistance, the model yielded an equivalent value of 21.6 Ω/□ compared to the ITO.

  • In this paper, two methods of making the Pd-added $SnO_2$ ($Pd-SnO_2$) powder with pure tetragonal phase by the hydrazine method were suggested and compared in terms of crystal structure, surface morphology, and alcohol gas response. One of the addition methods is to use $PdCl_2$ as a Pd source, the other is to use Pd-based organic with oleylamine (OAM). When Pd concentration was increased from 0 to 5 wt%, the average grain size of $Pd-SnO_2$ made with Pd-OAM were decreased from 32 to 12 nm. In the case of using with $PdCl_2$, grain size of the $PdCl_2$ fell to less than 10 nm. However, agglomerated and extruded surface morphology was observed for the films with Pd addition over 4 wt%. The crack-free $Pd-SnO_2$ thick films were able to successfully fill the $30{\mu}m$ gap of patterned Pt electrodes by optimized ink dropping method. Also, the 2 wt% $Pd-SnO_2$ thick film made with PdCl2 showed gas responses ($R_{air}/R_{gas}$) of 3.7, 5.7 and 9.0 at alcohol concentrations of 10, 50 and 100 ppm, respectively. On the other hand, the prepared 3 wt% $Pd-SnO_2$ thick film with Pd-OAM exhibited very excellent responses of 3.4, 6.8 and 12.2 at the equivalent measurement conditions, respectively. The 3 wt% $Pd-SnO_2$ thick film with Pd-OAM has a specific surface area of $31.39m^2/g$.
