Review : The Advanced Inkjet Printing Technology - UV curable Jet Ink - (총설 : 최신 잉크제트 인쇄기술 - UV 경화형 제트잉크 -)

  • The aim of this reviews is to introduce the information concerning design of the UV-curable jet ink composition in order to provide a good adhesive property on non-porous surface. In order to clarify the viscosity dependence of flying speed for the UV curable jet ink, rheological analysis and observation of the flying state of the ink were carried out. The relationship between ink formulas and adhesive property on non-porous surface was investigated. It was examined the adhesive property of radical polymerization type UV curable jet ink included hydrogen abstraction type photo-initiator, it was expected that the strong adhesive strength can be obtained between the ink and non-porous surface in this study. UV curable jet ink with a slight amount of water was prepared. Optimum ratio of the cationic polymerization type UV curable jet ink shows an adequate adhesive strength towards two kinds of non-porous surface such as glass, poly(vinyl chloride) when tests were conducted on the ink jet-printing test machine.

Rheological Properties According to the Pigment Concentration of Ink (안료 함량에 따른 잉크의 레올로지 성질의 변화)

  • Printing inks are mainly composed of pigment and vehicles. Among these components, the Vehicle affect the rheologic property of the ink the most but pigment content or characteristic also affect to the fluidity property not less than the vehicle. In the study, with the same vehicle on each sample, by making the sample to increase pigment content gradually. It can be examined the influence of the pigment to the fluidity of ink. In result we found that the viscosity value of the low shear rate rang has relatively higher value with increasing the pigment content in the ink. According to higher pigment content, yield stress and thixotropy index increases gradually. Structure recovery of the ink is that, the higher pigment content's ink, the less changing shear rate, and it takes less time to recover.

  • Printing inks are mainly composed of pigment and vehicles. In the study, It is tested effect to the ink fluidity and structure recovery according to change the pigment particle size. The ink fluidity have been observed by using rheometer at the various conditions and it has been tested to observe what the ink fluidity has different means. In result We have found that the viscosity value of the low shear rate range has relatively higher value with decreasing the pigment particle size in the ink. Also, it has been found that when the pigment particle size decreases, the yield stress gradually increase. In the case of ink's structure recovery, when the pigment particle size decreases in the ink, the less changing shear rate, and it takes less time to recover.

  • Ink-jet printing techniques with ceramic ink, which contains ceramic pigments as colorant, are in increasingly use in the ceramic industry. Generally, ceramic pigments that are produced by conventional method show diameters of several micrometers; these micrometer sized particles in the ink-jet printing process can cause undesirable behavior such as print head nozzle clogging. To prevent this problem, a particle size reduction process is required. In this study, CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) pigments were synthesized via solid state method. Each pigment particle was milled to submicron size by an attrition mill. The effects of micronizing on the morphology, mechanical property, crystal structure and color property of the CMYK ceramic pigments were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), particle size analysis (PSA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and CIE $L^{\ast}a^{\ast}b^{\ast}$.

  • In technology of ink-jet coating, Image quality from correlation between paper and ink depends on the properties of printer and ink as well as those of paper material. Generally, According to the quality of ink that consists of colorants from 5 to 20 percent, It seems that absorption behavior of each ink is different. In this study, we studied to estimate the effects of dye and pigment ink on the absorption and printing properties using 2-type papers on the market and 3-type silica-based coated papers whose pore structure is different. Using the theory of contact angle to evaluate the absorption property, it was possible to measure the baseline length between paper and ink, volume of droplet as well as contact angle. Also, It was possible to calculate wetting energy(mN/m) and spreading coefficient(mN/m) using the surface tension of each ink. These measurements were available to estimate ink-jet qualities.

  • The print quality of a ink jet printer is generally affected by three major components of the printing process: printer, ink formulation, and paper. The result of this study indicated that the surface sized paper with oxidized starch and cationic starch differed ink jet print quality in terms of ink spread and black optical density of the print image. Paper properties, like air permeability and siting degree, which may influence the ink jet printing were also measured. It was found that black print quality was controlled by starch level and ionic charge on the paper surface. Cationic surface sizing starch improved black ink jet print quality.

  • In this paper, PVA(polyvinylalcohol), oxidized starch and SBR latex were used as binders for ink-jet printing papers, and their effects of the type and blending ratio of binders on ink-jet printing properties were compared. In case of coating color using PVA mainly used for a binder in ink-jet printing, spreading of printed letters decreased and excellent images were manifested resulting from strong hydrophilic of PVA. However, increasing solids content of coating color was somewhat limited because of the interaction of PVA and functional groups in silica as well as high molecular weight of PVA. When oxidized starch and SBR latex were mixed with PVA at desirable ratio to solve these problems, runnability in coating process was improved and good printing properties were shown. Gloss was improved when latex was used along with PVA as a binder because of the thermoplastic property of the latex. From this result, possibilities of high solids content and high gloss ink-jet printing papers were investigated.

  • The drying speed of gravure ink are very fast because of evaporation drying type. The gravure ink are fitly selected variety resin and solvent for a wide range printing are adopted. Moreover, after-manufacture handling is necessary to various purposes. Though composition of gravure ink are same those of another printing ink, the viscosity of it are vary low compare with another printing inks. As property of variety printed matters, improvement of performance of printing layer and suitable after-manufacture handling, the more research of gravure ink are to be continue for development of printing technology. Generally, the gravure ink are made up resin, pigment, solvent and additive. Especially solvent are fitly selected for solution of resin, viscosity, and drying speed. Furthermore, it tis care of bad smell of remaining resin, poison and danger of fire of it. Because of the prevention of air pollution as restriction deflation of solvent, custody of dangerous object and improvement of work environment as labor safety hygiene and fire-low, the environment restriction of printing business become strict. This study has purpose of development of gravure ink of involved 30% below of alcohol is used for PVC film printing.

  • This study is about the effect from properties of coated paper and ink dispersion to the printed mottle. Ink receptivity would be expected that it is mainly effected by roughness of coated paper Because the transfer of ink can not be uniform with rough surface, it will cause the optical appearance such like printed mottle. And also it may be able to cause the printed mottle from uneven transfer of ink due to absorption property of based paper, depend on size degree, by using dampening in Off-set printing. Each different specific of surface and ink dispersion could cause printed mottle. Therefore this study was carried out by using densitometer and image analysis to show the interaction between properties of domestic coated paper and ink dispersion.

  • Copper nano particles have been considered as the materials for conductive ink due to its good thermal, electrical conductivity and low cost. However, copper nanoparticles oxidize easily, decreasing dispersion stability and electrical conductivity. Therefore, it is important to develop a method to minimize oxidation of copper nano particles to improve its dispersion stability property in copper nano ink. In this study, copper nano particles were coated with 1-Octanethiol VSAM(Vaporized Self Assembled Multilayers) to prevent oxidation and coated copper powders were dispersed in conductive ink successfully by studying its relationship of different chain length of solvents to 1-Octanethiol coating layer to fabricate nano ink. Various alcohol solvents, such as 1-Hexanol, 1-Octanol, and 1-Decanol were used. The coating layer was observed using FESEM and TEM. Furthermore, dispersion of copper nano particles in nano inks, was characterized using Turbiscan analyzer, viscometer, and contact angle measurement tool.
