Stringent emission regulations and increasing demands on reductions of noise and vibration of common rail direct injection (CRDI) diesel engines lead to the advent of piezo-actuated injectors. Compared with solenoid-actuated injectors, piezo-actuated injectors generate greater force and give faster response time, resulting in more accurate and faster injections. The accurate and fast response of an injector can offer an opportunity to control the combustion process and pollutant formation. In this study, the mathematical model of a piezo-actuated injector is developed. An estimator of the injection rate of the piezo-actuated injector is designed based on this model. The sliding mode theory is applied to the estimator design in order to overcome model uncertainties. The injector model and the estimator are verified by the injection experiments in an injector test bench. The simulation and the experimental results show that the proposed sliding mode observer can effectively estimate the injection timing and the injection rate of the piezo-actuated injector.
Fuel injection system greatly affects the performance of a direct injection diesel engine. A common rail injection system was introduced to satisfy the stringent emission standards, low fuel consumption, and low noise in recent years. The performance of a common-rail fuel injection system is strongly influenced by the injector characteristics. The common rail injector has evolved in order to improve its injection performance. The piezo-actuated injector is more suitable for common rail injection system due to its fast response and is expected to replace current solenoid-operated injector. In this study, nonlinear mathematical models are proposed for the solenoid-operated and the piezo-actuated injectors for control applications. Based on these models, the injection rate, which is one of the most important factors for the injection characteristics, is estimated using sliding mode observer. The simulation results and the experimental data show that the proposed sliding mode observers can effectively estimate the injection timing and the injection rate for both common-rail injectors.
Recently GDI(Gasoline Direct Injection) engine is spot-lighted to achieve higher thermal efficiency under partial loads and better performance at full loads. To realize this system, it is essential to make both stratified combustion and homogeneous combustion. Spray pattern must be optimized according to injection timing because ambient pressure in combustion chamber is varied with crank angle. In this experimental study, two types of visualization system such as laser scattering method and schlieren method were developed to clarity the spray behavior during on intake stroke. As the ambient pressure increases, thepenetration length and spray angle show a tendancy to decrease due to rising resistance caused by the drag force of the ambient air. Distribution of injected fuel on intake stroke has a significant effect on homogeneous mixture in the cylinder. These results provide the information on macroscopic wall-wet growth in the cylinder and design factors for developing GDI injector.
The common-rail injection systems, as a new diesel injection system for passenger car, have more degrees of freedom in controlling both the injection timing and injection rate with the high pressure. In this study, a piezo-driven injector was applied to a high pressure common-rail type fuel injection system for the control capability of the high pressure injector's needle and firstly examined the piezo-electric characteristics of a piezo-driven injector. Also in order to analyze the effect of injector's needle response driven by different driving method on the injection, we investigated the diesel spray characteristics in a constant volume chamber pressurized by nitrogen gas for two injectors, a solenoid-driven injector and a piezo-driven injector, both equipped with the same injection nozzle with sac type and 5-injection hole. The experimental method for spray visualization was based on back-light photography technique by utilizing a high speed framing camera. The macroscopic spray propagation was geometrically measured and characterized in term of the spray tip penetration, spray cone angle and spray tip speed. For the evaluation of the needle response of the above two injectors, we indirectly estimated the needle's behavior with an accelerometer and injection rate measurement employing Bosch's method was conducted. The experimental results show that the spray tip penetrations of piezodriven injector were longer, on the whole, than that of the solenoid-driven injector. Besides we found that the piezo-driven injector have a higher injection flow rate by a fast needle response and it was possible to control the injection rate slope in piezo-driven injector by altering the induced current.
In the DI diesel engine of passenger cars, common rail injection system have been used to improve the engine performance and reduce the exhaust emission by controlling injection timing, injection pattern, and injection duration. In case that common rail injection system is applied to high speed DI diesel engine, it is necessary to have high response and good repetition characteristics. These characteristics of injector depend on the characteristics of solenoid. Thus, to apply the common rail injection system in the high speed diesel engine, we had designed and made a multi-pole solenoid, and carried out repetition, response test to compare the multi-pole solenoid with the gasoline Injector solenoid. The result shows that repetition and response characteristics of multi-pole solenoid have better characteristics than the gasoline injector solenoid.
The kicker modulator was upgraded and installed in 1995. The PLS-II injection kicker modulator is configured with series resonant circuit. A total of four kicker magnets are used to distribute the normal storage ring beam orbit toward the septum magnet wall. Only one kicker modulator is used to drive the four kicker magnets. It is not adjust the current magnitude and timing of magnets. During the kicking, the beam has oscillation of 2 mm horizontal direction and $200{\mu}m$ vertical direction in present injector system. Our goals is to decrease the oscillation less than $300{\mu}m$. To give balanced current for all four magnets and to have precise timing between magnet current, we have plan to divide kicker power supply into four individual power supply. In this paper, the design of new individual kicker power supply and Fabrication of the new injector system is presented.
Performance of DI diesel engine with high fuel injection method is directly related to the emission characteristics and fuel consumption. At present, diesel injection system with piezo element is replacing conventional solenoid type due to their faster electro-mechanical properties. In this study, it was investigated the sensitivity characteristics regarding internal hydraulic modeling based on the AMESim environment of piezo-driven injector The analytic parameter for this study defined such as In/Out orifice, injection hole's diameter and driven voltage on piezo stack. As the results, it was shown that these parameter influence on a fast response characteristics of piezo-driven injector. Also we found fuel pressure recovery time is faster about 0.1 ms due to larger IN orifice diameter. And larger OUT orifice diameter occurs maximum pressure drop with faster its timing of about 0.2 ms.
The effect of the intake flow on the spray structure of a high pressure 11-hole fuel injector were examined in a single cylinder optical direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engine. The effects of injection timing and in-cylinder charge motion were investigated using the 2-dimensional Mie scattering technique. It was confirmed that in the homogeneous charge mode, the in-cylinder swirl charge motion played a major role in the fuel spray distribution during the induction stroke rather than the tumble flow. But, in the stratified charge mode, the effect of the in-cylinder charge was not so large that the injected spray pattern was nearly maintained and the increase of in-cylinder pressure by the upward moving piston reduced the fuel spray penetration.
The spray characteristics of a high pressure 6-hole injector were examined in a single cylinder optical direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engine. The effects of injection timing, in-cylinder charge motion, fuel injection pressure and coolant temperature were investigated using the 2-dimensional Mie scattering technique. It was confirmed that the in-cylinder charge motion played a major role in the fuel spray distribution during the induction stroke while the propagation of fuel spray was restrained during the compression stroke by the increasing pressure and the upward moving piston. In additions, it was confirmed that the liquid fuel droplets existing at the sprays edges were vaporized by the increase of the coolant temperature.
The effect of injector geometries including the injection angle and number of nozzle holes on homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine combustion has been investigated in an automotive-size single-cylinder diesel engine. The HCCI engine has advantages of simultaneous reduction of PM and NOx emissions by achieving the spatially homogenous distribution of diesel fuel and air mixture, which results in no fuel-rich zones and low combustion temperature. To make homogeneous mixture in a direct-injection diesel engine, the fuel is injected at early timing. The early injection guarantees long ignition delay period resulting in long mixing period to form a homogeneous mixture. The wall-impingement of the diesel spray is a serious problem in this type of application. The impingement occurs due to the low in-cylinder density and temperature as the spray penetrates too deep into the combustion chamber. A hole-type injector (5 holes) with smaller angle ($100^{\circ}$) than the conventional one ($150^{\circ}$) was applied to resolve this problem. The multi-hole injector (14 holes) was also tested to maximize the atomization of diesel fuel. The macroscopic spray structure was visualized in a spray chamber, and the spray penetration was analyzed. Moreover, the effect of injector geometries on the power output and exhaust gases was tested in a single-cylinder diesel engine. Results showed that the small injection angle minimizes the wall-impingement of diesel fuel that results in high power output and low PM emission. The multi-hole injector could not decrease the spray penetration at low in-cylinder pressure and temperature, but still showed the advantages in atomization and premixing.
