This paper described the effect of the multiple injections on the emission characteristics and combustion stability in a common rail diesel engine. In order to investigate the influence of multiple injections in a passenger car diesel engine, the injection strategy was varied with pilot injection, post injection and one main injection at various conditions. Based on the experimental results, the combustion and emissions characteristics were analyzed for the various injection strategies such as main, pilot-main, double-pilot-main, double- pilot-main-post injection strategy. It is revealed that the $NO_X$, HC and CO emissions are reduced by double pilot and post injection at medium load, however, soot emission is increased. Also, in the case of multiple injection, the combustion pressure is increased smoothly near the TDC and the coefficient of variation and fuel consumptions are decreased.
This study proposes a control strategy of the common rail pressure with a fuel injection limitation algorithm to reduce particulate matter (PM) emissions under transient states. The proposed control strategy consists of two parts: injection quantity limitation and rail pressure adaptation. The injection limitation algorithm determines the maximum allowable fuel injection quantity to avoid rich combustion under transient states. The fuel injection quantity is limited by predicting the burned gas rate after combustion; however, the reduced injection quantity leads to deterioration of engine torque. The common rail pressure adaptation strategy is designed to compensate for the reduced engine torque. An increase of the rail pressure under transient states contributes to enhancement of the engine torque as well as reduction of PM emissions by promoting atomization of the injected fuel. The proposed control strategy is validated through engine experiments. The rail pressure adaptation reduced the PM emission by 5-10% and enhanced the engine torque up to 2.5%.
This work was investigated 2-stage injection strategy on combustion and emissions in a direct injection compression-ignition engine fueled with DME. Single cylinder engine was equipped with common rail. Injection pressure was 700bar, dSOI between the main injection and the pilot injection was varied. Diesel was used as compared fuel of DME in all cases. The results was shown that maximum pressure was higher than all cases and its amount of DME and diesel was similar. Regardless the pilot injection, the main fuel injection timing was same. The heat release rate of the main injection for diesel was high while that of pilot injection for DME was high. The THC was very low regardless of the fuel type and injection strategy. In the single injection, NOx was increased to retard of main injection timing regardless of the fuel type. NOx emissions was decreased with the retardation of the main injection timing regardless of the fuel type in the case of 2-stage injection strategy.
Recently, the important issues of gasoline engine are to reduce the fuel consumption and emission. Thus, many researchers are studying the technology to solve these problems. One approach of these issues is to achieve homogeneous charge combustion and stratified change combustion with various injection strategy. In this study, the combustion characteristics of DISI engine accrding to injection strategy were examined. The effect of injection timing on lean limit A/F were investigated using dual DISI single cylinder. The results show that the engine operation region of dual DISI type engine is larger than that of PFI and DISI type engine cases. Especially, late injection is very effective to extend the operation region more than any other injection timings. In addition, the results show that when the DISI injection ratio is increase, leam limit A/F is improved. It means that the dual injection system car meet with emission regulations and reduce the fuel consumption. Also, combustion pressure of dual injection system is much higher than PFI and DISI injection.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of fuel injection strategy and engine load on the structure and emissions characteristics of a DI diesel engine with 1.6L of piston displacement. In order to analyze the particulate matter (PM) and exhaust emissions characteristics in a direct injection diesel engine, the quantity of PM and exhaust emissions (including HC, CO and $NO_X$) were investigated under various injection strategies and engine loads. Two different injection strategies (one pilot/main injection and two pilots/main injection) was investigated under the various engine loads. A thermophoretic sampling method with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to obtain the PM morphology (including primary particles, the size of the agglomerates, the number of agglomerates, the fractal dimension). The quantity of soot gradually increased with increasing engine load at both injection strategies. The primary particles in the PM agglomerates indicate that the average of the primary particle and radius of gyration increased as the engine load increased.
The technologies employing spray-guided type combustion system for ultra-lean combustion direct injection engine is focused as a promising technology for satisfying emission regulations and improving fuel economy. In the present study, control and design optimization of lean-burn LPG direct injection engine was carried out with control strategy and injection position changes. Inter-injection spark ignition strategy was applied and the effect of the strategy was assessed at relatively higher load operation condition than previous researches. In order to create richer mixture in the vicinity of spark plug electrode, relative distance between the dead-end of injector and the electrode of spark plug was changed.

As part of an evaluation for an in-vessel severe accident management strategy, a coolant injection into the reactor vessel under depressurization of the reactor coolant system (RCS) has been evaluated in detail using the SCDAP/RELAP5 computer code. A high-pressure sequence of a small break loss of coolant accident (SBLOCA) has been analyzed in the Optimized Power Reactor (OPR) 1000. The SCDAP/RELAP5 results have shown that safety injection timing and capacity with RCS depressurization timing and capacity are very effective on the reactor vessel failure during a severe accident. Only one train operation of the high pressure safety injection (HPSI) for 30,000 seconds with RCS depressurization prevents failure of the reactor vessel. In this case, the operation of only the low pressure safety injection (LPSI) without a HPSI does not prevent failure of the reactor vessel.
This paper describes the effects of injection rate shaping on the combustion, fuel consumption and emission of $NO_x$ and soot of a medium duty diesel engine. The focus is on the influence of four different injection rate shapes, square type 1, square type 2, boot and ramp, with a variation of maximum injection pressure and start of injection (SOI). The experiments were carried out on a 1 liter single cylinder research diesel engine equipped with an amplifier-piston common rail injection system, allowing the adjustment of the injection pressure during the injection event and thus injection rate as desired. Two strategies to maintain the injected fuel mass constant were followed. One where rate shaping is applied at constant injection duration with different peak injection pressure and one strategy where rate shaping is applied at a constant peak injection pressure, but with variable injection duration. Injection rate shaping was found to have a large effect on the premixed and diffusion combustion, a significant influence on $NO_x$ emissions and depending on the followed strategy, moderate or no influence on soot emission. Only small effects on indicated fuel consumption were found.
A hybrid safety injection tank (H-SIT) can enhance the capability of an advanced power reactor plus (APR+) during a station black out (SBO) that is accompanied by a severe accident. It may a useful alternative to an electric motor. The operations strategy of the H-SIT has to be investigated to achieve maximum utilization of its function. In this study, the master logic diagram (i.e., an analysis for identifying the differences between an H-SIT and a safety injection pump) and an accident case classification were used to determine the parameters of the H-SIT operation. The conditions that require the use of an H-SIT were determined using a decision-making process. The proper timing for using an H-SIT was also analyzed by using the Multi-dimensional Analysis of Reactor Safety (MARS) 1.3 code (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, Daejeon, South Korea). The operation strategy analysis indicates that a H-SIT can mitigate five types of failure: (1) failure of the safety injection pump, (2) failure of the passive auxiliary feedwater system, (3) failure of the depressurization system, (4) failure of the shutdown cooling pump (SCP), and (5) failure of the recirculation system. The results of the MARS code demonstrate that the time allowed for recovery can be extended when using an H-SIT, compared with the same situation in which an H-SIT is not used. Based on the results, the use of an H-SIT is recommended, especially after the pilot-operated safety relief valve (POSRV) is opened.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas(LPG) has attracted attention as a alternative fuel. The lean-burn LPG direct injection engine is a promising technology because it has an advantage of lower harmful emissions. This study aims to investigate the effect of combustion strategy and excess air ratio on combustion and emission characteristics in lean-burn LPG direct injection engine. Fuel consumption and combustion stability were measured with change of the ignition timing and injection timing at various air/fuel ratio conditions. The lean combustion characteristics were evaluated as a function of the excess air ratio with the single injection and multiple injection strategy. Furthermore, the feasibility of lean operation with stratified mixture was assessed when comparing the combustion and emission characteristics with premixed lean combustion.
