  • A series of fire tests involving realistic solid combustible materials was conducted to quantify the heat release rate and investigate the fire growth characteristics during the initial fire growth stage. For these tests, single/double wood cribs, urethane cushion having polypropylene covers and wood crib on nylon carpet with urethane carpet padding were used as a fuel source. The fire growth coefficient of the solid combustible materials was quantified and the fire growth characteristics were compared with the $t^2$ fire scenario. The mean effective heat of combustion was evaluated by the total mass loss of fuel and total energy release concept and examined the effect of the ventilation and fire condition. The present study provides the practical information on the fire growth characteristics of solid combustible material to design to a set of fire scenarios for the fire risk analysis.

  • We have grown vertically aligned carbon nanotubes in a large area of Co-Ni codeposited Si substrates by the thermal CVD using $C_2$H$_2$gas. Since the discovery of carbon nanotubes, Synthesis of carbon nanotubes for mass production has been achieved by several methods such as laser vaporization, arc discharge, and pyrolysis. In particular, growth of vertically aligned nanotubes is of technological importance for applications to FED. Recently, vertically aligned carbon nanotubes have been grown on glass by PECVD. Aligned carbon nanotubes can be also grown on mesoporous silica and Fe patterned porous silicon using CVD. Despite such breakthroughs in the growth, the growth mechanism of the alignment are still far from being clearly understood. Furthermore, FED has not been clearly demonstrated yet at a practical level. Here, we demonstrate that carbon nanotubes can be vertically aligned on catalyzed Si substrate when the domain density reaches a certain value. We suggest that steric hindrance between nanotubes at an initial stage of the growth forces nanotubes to align vertically and then nanotubes are further grown by the cap growth mechanism.

  • This study examines the differences in the various characteristics of the firms along their growth stage based on the survey data of 2,515 Korean ventures. Venture characteristics include KSFs(Key Success Factors), environment attributes of their product markets, CEO roles, the use of OPR(Other Peoples Resource). Growth stage of the ventures are classified by their dominant management problems: foundation, the market launch of the first proprietary product or service, The Outset of second generation product or service, and the Initial Public Offering (IPO) and stabilization. The results of this study show substantial differences in many aspects among firms at different growth stages. Although common KSFs exist, KSFs are changing as the venture evolves. Differences in KSFs and environmental attributes along growth stage require CEO to do different role in business process. Different kinds and amounts of external resources are needed according to their growth stage. However, almost all of external resources are offered to ventures in later stage. Entrepreneurs need to change their role, as their firms grow, from visioning and strategic role to marketing and production emphasized role. Based on the results, this study suggests a number of new government policies and future research ideas. Other implications and limitations of this study are also noted.

  • Plant-derived natural products have been and will continue to be valuable sources. Elicitors have been employed to modify cell metabolism in order to enhance the productivity of useful metabolites in plant cell/tissue cultures. In this study, several elicitors were used to improve the productivity of useful metabolites and to reduce culture time for archiving high concentration in P. ginseng hairy root cultures. The addition of chitosan, chitosan oligosaccharide and alginate oligosaccharide to the culture of P. ginseng hairy roots caused growth to be inhibited with the increase in elicitor concentration. The usage of the chitosan elicitor and D-glucosamine caused a slight decrease in hairy root growth, whereas total ginseng saponin accumulated slightly with the increase in elicitor concentration. When gel beads were added to the culture medium at the initial period, hairy root growth was enhanced. The maximum growth was 1.35 times higher than that of the control at $1\%$ (w/v). Total ginseng saponin content decreased due to the addition of alginate beads. This would result in consistent diffusion of lower levels of calcium ions during the culture period that promotes biomass growth.

  • Nucleate pool boiling experiments with constant heat flux condition were performed using pure R11 and R113 for various surface angles under saturated pool condition. A circular heater of 1 mm diameter, with artificial cavity in the center, fabricated using MEMS technique and the high-speed controller were used to maintain the constant heat flux. Images of bubble growth were taken at 5,000 frames per second using a high-speed CCD camera. The bubble geometry was obtained from the captured bubble images. The effects of surface angles on the bubble growth behaviors were analyzed as dimensional scales for the initial and thermal growth regions. The parameters for the bubble growth behaviors were bubble radius, bubble growth rate, sliding velocity, bubble shape and advancing and receding contact angles. These phenomena require further analysis for various surface angles, but this study will provide good experimental data with constant heat flux boundary condition for such works.

  • The 125kW external reforming (ER) type molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) system for developing a commercial prototype has been operated at Boryeong thermal power plant site since the end of 2009. The system consists of 125kW stack with $10,000 cm^2$ effective area, mechanical balance of plant (MBOP) with anode recycle system, and electrical balance of plant (EBOP). The 125kW MCFC stack installed in December, 2009 has been operated from January, 2010 after 20 days pre-treatment. The stack open circuit voltage (OCV) was 214V at initial load operation, which approaches the thermodynamically theoretical voltage. The stack voltage remained stable range from 160V to 180V at the maximum generating power of 120 kW DC. The stack has been operated for 3,270 hours and operated at rated power for 1,200 hours.

  • The orientational cross-over phenomena in an RF sputtering growth of TiN films were studied in an in-situ, real-time synchrotron x-ray scattering experiment. For the films grown with pure Ar sputtering gas, the cross-over from the more strained (002)-oriented grains to the less strained (111)-oriented grains occurred as the film thickness was increased. As the sputtering power was increased, the cross-over thickness, at which the growth orientation changes from the <002> to the <111> direction, was decreased. The addition of $N_2$ besides Ar as sputtering gas suppressed the cross-over, and consequently resulted in the (002) preferred orientation without exhibiting the cross-over. We attribute the observed cross-over phenomena to the competition between the surface and the strain energy. The x-ray powder diffraction, the x-ray reflectivity, and the ex-situ AFM surface topology study consistently suggest that the microscopic growth front was in fact always the (002) planes. In the initial stage of growth, the (002) planes were aligned to the substrate surface to minimize the surface energy. At later stages, however, the (002) growth front tilted away from the surface by about $60^{\circ}$ to relax the strain, which caused the cross-over of the preferred growth direction to the <111> direction.

  • Marginal soils such as BRlS (Beach Ridges Interspersed with Swales) soils and ex-tin mining land make up approximately 0.5 million ha or about 2% of Malaysia's land area. In the coastal areas of the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia impoverished sandy BRIS dominates the landscape with most lying idle as there is no national management plan for their utilization. A field study was carried out to see whether mycorrhizal application had any effect on the growth of three exotic Acacia spp., i.e. Acacia auriculiformis, A. mangium and Acacia hybrid (A. auriculiformis ${\times}$ A. mangium) on BRIS soils. Two types of mycorrhizal inoculum, namely, a commercially available arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculum marketed as $MycoGold^{TM}$ and an indigenous ectomycorrhizal Tomentella sp. inoculum were tested. In the initial six months, height growth of all three tree species inoculated with the arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculum was significantly improved compared to the ectomycorrhizal inoculated and uninoculated control plants. The mycorrhizal effect was not evident thereafter and repeated application of the arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculum may be necessary for continued growth enhancement. Of the three species, A. mangium had the highest relative height growth rate over the 24 months on BRlS soils.

  • Purpose : To assess the height growth of children with epilepsy receiving antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and the related factors. Methods : The subjects were 148 children diagnosed with epilepsy at Pusan National University Hospital between January 1996 and December 2003, who received AEDs for more than 3 y. We measured height at the initiation of AED medication and at the last visit during AED medication. We analyzed the mean height standard deviation score (SDS) according to several factors, including sex, age at initial medication, seizure type, underlying causes of epilepsy, seizure frequency before AED medication, seizure control, number of AEDs, height SDS before medication, and duration of medication. Results : In the total population, height SDS at initial therapy and last follow-up were $-0.06{\pm}1.39$ versus $0.10{\pm}1.12$ (P=0.09). Children with controlled seizures showed a significant increase in height SDS, from $-0.12{\pm}1.39$ to $0.10{\pm}1.09$ (P=0.04), and children on medication for less than 6 y showed a significant increase in height SDS, from $-0.09{\pm}1.54$ to $0.21{\pm}1.07$ (P=0.03). Also, children with negative initial height SDS showed a significant increase in height SDS (P<0.05). No height SDS changes were observed in any of the other groups, regardless of sex, seizure type, underlying causes of epilepsy, or age at initial medication. Conclusion : Neither epilepsy nor AED medication affects long-term height growth. Controlled seizure and short duration of AED medication are positive factors for height growth in children with epilepsy.

  • A micromechanical model is presented for superplasticity in which heterogeneous microstructures are coupled with deformation behavior. The effects of initial distributions of grain size, and their evolutions on the mechanical properties can be predicted by the model. Alternative stress rate models such as Jaumann rate and rotation incremental rate have been employed to analyze uniaxial loading and simple shear problems and the appropriate modeling was studied on the basis of hypoelasticity and elasto-viscoplasticity. The model has been implemented into finite element software so that full process simulation can be carried out. Tests have been conducted on Ti-6Al-4V alloy and the microstructural features such as grain size, distributions of grain size, and volume fraction of each phase were examined for the materials that were tested at different strain rates. The experimentally observed stress-strain behavior on a range of initial grain size distributions has been shown to be correctly predicted. In addition, the effect of volume fraction of the phases and concurrent grain growth were analyzed. The dependence of failure strain on strain rate has been explained in terms of the change in mechanism of grain growth that occurs with changing strain rate.
