  • This paper presents the optimal design of BLDC motor keeping the average torque and cogging toruqe of the initial model while minimizing the volume of magnet pole by FEM and Taguchi method. Experimental tests are performed by Finite element method, and the second order polynomial equations are obtained from FEM results due to design parameter variation referred to orthogonal arrays by Taguchi. The presented optimization shows a big reduction of computation time and a largely reduced volume of magnet pole.

  • The performance of dynamic path following of a wheeled mobile robot with nonholonomic constraints has some drawbacks such as the influence of the initial state. The drawbacks can be overcome by the temporary path generator and modified output. But with the previous input-output linearization method using them, it is difficult to tune the gains, and if there are some modeling errors, the low gain can make the system unstable. And if a high gain is used to overcome the model uncertainties, the control inputs are apt to be large so the system can be unstable. In this paper. an H$_{\infty}$ controller is designed to guarantee robustness to model parameter uncertainties and to consider the magnitude of control inputs. And the solution to Hamilton Jacobi (HJ) inequality, which is essential to H$_{\infty}$ control design, is obtained by nonlinear matrix inequality (NLMI).

  • Control system by means of fuzzy theory has demonstrated its robustness in applying to the high-order and nonlinear dynamic system in that it can utilizes the human expert knowledges in system design. In this paper, first, the design methodology of HFC combined PID controller with fuzzy controller by membership function of weighting coefficient is proposed. Second, Second, an auto-tuning algorithms utilizing the simplified reasoning method and genetic algorithms is presented to improve the performance of hybrid fuzzy controller. Especially, in order to obtain the optimal scaling factors and PID parameters of HFC using GA based on advanced initial individual, three kinds of estimation modes such as basic, contraction, and expansion mode are effectively utilized. The proposed HFC is evaluated and discussed in ITAE, overshoot and rising time to show applicability and superiority with simulation results.

  • Crown parameters are important roles in tree species identification, because the canopy is the aggregate of all the crowns. However, crown measurements with spaceborne image data have remained more difficult than on aerial photographs since trees show more structural detail at higher resolutions. This recognized problem led to the initiation of the research to determine if high resolution satellite image data could be used to identify and classify single tree species. In this paper, shape parameters derived from pixel-based crown area measurements and texture features derived from GLCM parameters in QuickBird image were tested and compared for individual tree species identification. As expected, initial studies have shown that the crown parameters and the canopy texture parameters provided a differentiating method between coniferous trees and broad-leaved trees within the compartment(less than forest stand) for single extraction from spaceborne high resolution image.

  • A stochastic Gompertz diffusion model for tumor growth is a topic of active interest as cancer is a leading cause of death in Korea. The direct maximum likelihood estimation of stochastic differential equations would be possible based on the continuous path likelihood on condition that a continuous sample path of the process is recorded over the interval. This likelihood is useful in providing a basis for the so-called continuous record or infill likelihood function and infill asymptotic. In practice, we do not have fully continuous data except a few special cases. As a result, the exact ML method is not applicable. In this paper we proposed a method of parameter estimation of stochastic Gompertz differential equation via Markov chain Monte Carlo methods that is applicable for several data structures. We compared a Markov transition data structure with a data structure that have an initial point.

  • An analytical study about dynamic behavior of center pivot rocker arm type valve train system equipped with roller of diesel engine is developed. At first, a mathematical model for the dynamic analysis has been set up using the lumped parameter method. In that model, valve spring is divided as some mass elemehts so as to simulate spring surging, Then, how the design parameters, such as valve mass, rocker arm inertia, valve spring stiffness, and initial load on valve spring, affect valve dynamic behavior especially in the valve close area is scrutinized.

  • The airframe ground vibration tests were conducted on the KC-100 aircraft according to the regulation requirement, KAS 23.629(a)(2) and the modal characteristics for the target modes were measured. To make FE model tuning, a design sensitivity approach with engineering judgment was implemented using MSC/Nastran and Attune, a genetic algorithm based parameter optimization software. Based on the comparison between initial prediction and test results, design variables such as beam cross-sectional properties and spring stiffnesses were devised. As the results, the correlation of the FE model to the GVT results was made appropriately, meeting the goal of matching the target frequencies within 5%.

  • The main objectives of this study are to examine the random response of a vibration absorber system with autoparametric coupling in the neighborhood of internal resonance by Gaussian closure and to compare the results with those obtained by Monte Carlo simulation. The numerical simulation is found to support the main features of the nonlinear modal interaction in the neighborhood of internal resonance conditions. While the Gaussian closure exhibits regions of multiple solutions in the neighborhood of internal resonance, the numerical simulation gives only one solution depending on the assigned initial conditions. The on-off intermittency phenomena of the cantilever mode is observed in the Monte Carlo simulation over a small range of parameter.

  • Using inference models developed for estimation of the parameters necessary to implement the Runoff Block of the Stormwater Management Model (SWMM), a number of alternative inference scenarios were developed to assess the influence of inference model complexity and structure on the calibration of the catchment modelling system. These inference models varied from the assumption of a spatially invariant value (catchment average) to spatially variable with each subcatchment having its own unique values. Fur-thermore, the influence of different measures of deviation between the recorded information and simulation predictions were considered. The results of these investigations indicate that the model performance is more influenced by model structure than complexity, and control parameter values are very much dependent on objective function selected as this factor was the most influential for both the initial estimates and the final results.

  • Cam/tappet wear is one of the critical concerns in valve train deign. Maximum contact stress and minimum oil film thickness between the cam and tappet are usually checked for the estimation of wear characteristics. If the two extreme cases arise simultaneously, there is a strong possibility of cam/tappet wear. In this paper, effects of valve train layout on the wear characteristics were studied. Especially for swinging arm type valve trains, initial geometric layout must be very carefully defined to avoid wear problems. The study was performed fur an end pivot type OHC valve train, which had severe wear problems. Analysis results show that some geometric parameter affect very sensitively on the wear characteristics. Experiments were also performed for the original and modified valve trains, which strongly support the analysis results.
