  • Anaerobic digestion at the temperature of $35-55^{\circ}C$ was conducted using an artificial sludge of uniform composition. The hydraulic retention time of 5 days was chosen because the temperature effect was effectively shown at a high loading. Inhibition of the methane fermentation decreased as the temperature increased. Acid fermentation was prevalent at the mesophilic and intermediate temperatures, while active methane fermentation took place at $55^{\circ}C$. Temperature not only affects activity of the microorganisms, but also affects physical and chemical properties of the sludge, Digestion inhibition was much reduced when the feed sludge was diluted, and active methane fermentation was possible at all temperatures. The digestion efficiency was governed by the organic loading rate as well as the hydraulic 10ading rate. No reduction of the digestion efficiency at $40-45^{\circ}C$, which had been referred to a critical temperature range, was observed. The digestion efficiency increased monotonically from mesophilic to thermophilic range. Improved settling properties of digested sludge was also recorded at higher temperatures.

  • Objective: The study aim was to prepare poly-DL-lactide-poly (PELA) microspheres encapsulating recombinant tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) in an adenovirus to investigate its inhibition on the proliferation of hepatocellular carcinoma cells HepG2. Methods: Microspheres were prepared by encapsulating the recombinant TIMP-1 adenovirus into biodegradable PELA. The particle size, viral load, encapsulation efficiency and in-vitro release were measured. Microspheres were used to infect HepG2 cells, then infection efficiency was examined under a fluorescent microscope and ultrastructural changes assessed by TEM. Expression of TIMP-1 mRNA in HepG2 cells was examined by semi-quantitative RT-PCR and proliferation by MTT and cell growth curve assays. Results: We successfully prepared microspheres encapsulating recombinant TIMP-1 adenovirus with a diameter of $1.965{\mu}m$, an encapsulation efficiency of 60.0%, a viral load of $10.5{\times}10^8/mg$ and approximate 60% of virus release within 120 h, the total releasing time of which was longer than 240 h. The microspheres were confirmed to be non-toxic with blank microspheres. Infected HepG2 cells could stably maintain in-vitro expression of TIMP-1, with significantly effects on biological behaviour Conclusion: PELA microspheres encapsulating a recombinant TIMP-1 adenovirus can markedly inhibit the proliferation of HepG2 cells, which provides an experimental basis for polymer/chemistry-based gene therapy of hepatocellular carcinomas.

  • For the purpose of antibacterial and photocatalystic deodorization functions, the papermaking inorganic fillers and pigments were surface-modified with Ag nano-colloidal solution and $TiO_2$ by using the hybridization technique. The functional specialty sheets and coating papers were produced with the surface-modified fillers and pigments, and evaluated by halo test and inhibition growth test in their antibacterial and photocatalystic characteristics. For the application of specially produced antibacterial handsheet to the wallpaper usages, the photocatalyst efficiency test of benzene in volatile organic compound dissolution experiment of antibacterial and deodorization function wallpaper showed that the efficiency was 45~50% for 80 min of reaction time and 90% of attained resolution was reached at approximately 30 min of response time.

  • Five derivatives of phenylthiourea namely: 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-phenylthiourea (1), 1-(4-methylphenyl)-3- phenylthiourea (2), 1-(4-bromophenyl)-3-phenylthiourea (3), 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-phenylthiourea (4) and 1-phenylthiourea (5) have been evaluated as new inhibitors for the corrosion of carbon steel in 2 M HCl solution using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. Potentiodynamic polarization measurements showed that these derivatives are mixed-type inhibitors. The inhibition efficiency was found to increase with inhibitor concentration and decreases with rise in temperature. The thermodynamic parameters of adsorption and activation were determined and discussed. Nyquist plots showed depressed semicircles with their centre below real axis. The adsorption process of studied derivatives on carbon steel surface obeys Temkin adsorption isotherm. The synergistic effect of these derivatives and some anions is discussed from the viewpoint of adsorption models. The electrochemical results are in good agreement with the calculated quantum chemical HOMO and LUMO energies of the tested molecules.

  • The inhibition effect of cinnamon plant extract as a green corrosion inhibitor for steel in sulfide polluted salt water was studied by potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM). The results showed that cinnamon plant extract in sulfide polluted salt water is a good corrosion inhibitor with inhibition efficiency reached to 80% at 250 ppm of the plant extract. The adsorption of cinnamon obeys Temkin adsorption isotherm, and acts as a mixed-type of inhibitor but dominantly as a cathodic inhibitor in sulfide polluted salt water.

  • An efficient one pot multicomponent synthesis of pyrimidinone derivatives of Biginelli type is described. 4-amino-6-aryl-pyrimidine-5-carbonitrile molecules were synthesized efficiently via three-component Biginelli-type condensation of aldehyde, malononitrile, and semicarbazone as urea substituent in the presence of a catalytic amount of PEG-400 as green medium under microwave irradiation. The reactions proceeded efficiently in the presence of microwave radiation to afford the desired products in good to excellent yields. Products have been confirmed by IR, and NMR spectral analysis. All the molecules were tested for their antimicrobial activity against E. coli, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and C. tropicalis. Some of the compounds have shown moderate to good inhibition efficiency against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The potent activity was observed against the fungal species with minimum inhibition concentration 12.5 ㎍/mL.

  • 3-(4-Iodophenyl)-2-imino-2,3-dihydrobenzo[d]oxazol-5-yl 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (4-IPhOXTs) was synthesized and its inhibiting action on the corrosion of stainless steel 316L (SS) in sulfuric acid was investigated by means of potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results of the investigation show that this compound has excellent inhibiting properties for SS corrosion in sulfuric acid. Inhibition efficiency increases with increase in the concentration of the inhibitor. The adsorption of 4-IPhOXTs onto the SS surface followed the Langmuir adsorption model with the free energy of adsorption ΔG0ads of −8.45 kJ mol−1 . Quantum chemical calculations were employed to give further insight into the mechanism of inhibition action of 4-IPhOXTs.

  • The efficiency of photosensitization of methyl linoleate (ML) oxidation by N-acetyl-L-trypophan(NAT) and 3-methyl indole(scatole) was markedly enhanced by increased concentration of ML in ethanol solution. The fluorescence intensities of sensitizers were observed to be quenched by ML, indicating that ML interacts with the indole excited singlet state. The inhibition of photosensitization by azide demonstrated a possible role of singlet oxygen in the photosensitization. The steady state kinetic treatment of azide inhibition of photosensitization was expected to show linear increase of reciprocal yield of ML oxidation product vs. reciprocal ML concentration at constant azide concentration, but the actual slope was nonlinear. This indicates another competing reaction involved in the photosensitization, As a possible competing reaction, electron transfer from ML to the excited sensitizer was proposed, since the measured fluorescence quenching rate constant closely resembled electron transfer rate constant determined from ML concentration dependence of oxidation product formation.

  • We investigated the enect of $O_3$ on the photosynthetic characteristics of tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima) that is naturalized plant and used as restoration plant for contaminated area. Two-year-old seedlings were planted to pots and transferred into closed $O_3$ chamber. Photosynthetic pigments contents and photosynthetic characteristics were measured every three weeks under 100 pub $O_3$ fumigation. There was no visible foliar injury by $O_3$ exposure and contents of photosynthetic pigments did not show significant differences between control and $O_3$-treated seedlings. Also there were no significant differences in stomatal conductance, and water use efficiency. But photosynthetic rate and apparent quantum yield (AQY) of $O_3$ treated seedlings were reduced after nine weeks of ozone fumigation. In addition, the reduction of carboxylation efficiency and photorespiration were observed in the leave of $O_3$ treated seedlings after six weeks. In accordance with our result, carbon fixation system of A. altissima was most sensitive to $O_3$ stress to evaluate physiological damage induced by $O_3$.

  • Background: Owing to its high efficiency in lipid and protein production, peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is considered one of most important crops world-wide. The kernels of peanuts are undoubtedly the most important product this plant, whereas the skin is almost completely neglected in nutraceutical terms. However, peanut skin contains potentially health-promoting phenolics and dietary fiber, and there is considerable potential for commercial exploitation. In this study, we evaluated the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of an extract of peanut skin (PS). Methods and Results: The α-glucosidase inhibitory effects of 80% ethanol extracts of peanut (A. hypogaea L. 'Sinpalkwang') skin were evaluated and found to have a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 1.2 ㎍/㎖. Progress curves for enzyme reactions were recorded spectrophotometrically, and the inhibition kinetics revealed time-dependent inhibition with enzyme isomerization. Furthermore, using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography combined with quadrupole-orbitrap mass spectrometry, we identified 26 compounds in the peanut skin extract, namely, catechin, epicatechin, and 24 proanthocyanidins. Conclusions: The results suggest that peanut skin can be utilized as an effective source of α-glucosidase inhibition in functional foods and nutraceuticals.
