  • Imaging in the Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) provides several advantages over the visible and near-infrared regions: enhanced image resolution in in foggy or dusty environments, deep tissue penetration, surveillance capabilities with eye-safe lasers, assessment of food quality and safety. Commercially available SWIR imagers are fabricated by integrating expensive epitaxial grown III-V compound semiconductor sensors with Si-based readout integrated circuits(ROIC) by indium bump bonding Infrared image sensors made of solution-processed quantum dots have recently emerged as candidates for next-generation SWIR imagers. They combine ease of processing, tunable optoelectronic properties, facile integration with Si-based ROIC and good performance. Here, we review recent research and development trends of various application fields of SWIR image sensors and nano-materials capable of absorption and emission of SWIR band. With SWIR sensible nano-materials, new type of SWIR image sensor can replace current high price SWIR imagers.

  • Quarternary $SrO-B_2O_3-Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ glasses were fabricated as a function of $R({\equiv}SrO\;mole%/B_2O_3\;mole%)$ and $K({\equiv}(Al_2O_3+SiO_2)\;mole%/B_2O_3\;mole%)$. The structures of these glasses were investigated through Infrared absorption spectra. When R increased, the intensities of the absorption bands around $1,200{\sim}1,600cm^{-1}$ resulting from the B-O stretching vibration bond in the symmetrical trigonal $BO_3$ units decreased, and these of the absorption bands around $800{\sim}1,200cm^{-1}$ caused by the B-O stretching vibration bond of the tetrahedral $BO_4$ units varied. Also, the intensities of the absorption bands for the B-O stretching vibration band in trigonal $BO_3$ units increased and these of the bands for B-O stretching vibration bond in tetrahedral $BO_4$ units decreased as K increased.

  • E+A galaxies are interpreted as post-starburst systems because of strong Balmer absorption lines but any emission lines indicating the lack of current star formation activities, thus they are one of key populations for understanding how star formation activities evolve in galaxies. We present mid-infrared (MIR) spectral energy distributions of E+A galaxies using the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) preliminary released data. Furthermore, we investigate the role of environment with respect to the MIR properties of E+A galaxies.

  • The 77 K luminescence and excitation spectra, and 298 K infrared and absorption spectra of $cis-{\Alpha}-[Cr(trien)Cl_2]Cl{\cdot}H_2O$ (trien=triethylenetetramine) have been measured. Ligand field electronic transitions due to spin-allowed and spin-forbidden are assigned. The zero-phonon line in the excitation spectrum splits into two components by $198\; cm^{-1}$, and the large $^2E_g$ splitting can be reproduced by the modern ligand field theory. It is confirmed that nitrogen atoms of the trien ligand have a strong σ-donor character, but chloride ligand has weak σ- and π -donor properties toward chromium(III) ion.

  • The capnograph system for determining the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in the blood of a patient was developed based on the NDIR(non-dispersive infrared) absorption technology. NDIR gas analyzing method requires an optical absorption chamber and signal processing hardware. In this paper, we have designed and implemented NDIR type $CO_2$ gas chamber in consideration of the time response characteristics and lamp chopping frequency. And we have implemented signal processing hardware using two infrared sources to reduce the thermal background effect. The implemented gas chamber and signal processing hardware were tested in the temperature variation experiment and human expiratory experiment. The results showed that the system could produce a stable output signal and a good $CO_2$ gas concentration curve like a typical capnogram.

  • The Near Infrared region of the energy spectrum was first discovered by Hershel in the year 1800. The principles of NIR is based on light absorption of specific organic chemical bonds. The absorption at each wavelength is measured and a spectre is obtained. The spectre is then treated mathematically and with the absorption data is converted to absolute units via a calibration. In the last two decades it has developed dramatically. With the invention of computers and the ability to treat a large amount of data in a very short time the use of NIR for many different purposes has developed very fast. During the last decade with the aid of very powerful PC's the application of NIR technology has become even more widespread. Now or days development of very robust calibrations can be done in a relatively short time with a minimum of resources. The use of Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR) in the Meat industry is relatively new. The first installations were taken into operation in the 80ties. The Meat Industry in often referred to as rather conservative and slow to embrace new technologies, they stay with the old and proven methods. The first NIR instruments used by the Meat Industry, and most other industries, were multipurpose build, which means that the sample presentation was not well suited to this particular application, or many other applications for that sake. As the Meat Industry grows and develops to meet the demands of the modern markets, they realise the need for better control of processes and final products. From the early 90 ties and onward the demand for 'rear time' rapid results starts growing, and some suppliers of NIR instruments (and instruments based on other technologies, like X-ray) start to develop and manufacture instrumentation dedicated to the particular needs of the Meat Industry. Today it is estimated that there are approximately 2000 rapid instruments placed in the Meat industry world-wide. By far most of these are used as at-line or laboratory installations, but the trend and need is moving towards real on-line or in-line solutions. NIR is the most cost effective and reproducible analytical procedure available for the twenty first century.

  • Thermal Imaging systems are reported to be crucial for fire fighting and beginning to be used by fire fighters. The performance of thermal imaging system is determined by both the radiation of infrared from the target and the attenuation of infrared signal in the optical path by the absorption, scattering, diffraction and reflection. In the scene of fire, water drops with various sizes such as vaporized water, wafer mist from sprinkler, and wafer to suppress the fire reside with various gas generated by burning. To measure the transmission of infrared radiation in the scene of fire, fire simulating system and thermal imagers with cooled detector which detects $3{\sim}5{\mu}m$ infrared and uncooled detector fabricated by the MEMS technology which detects $8{\sim}12{\mu}m$ infrared. are made. With thermal imagers and Ire simulating system, the change of thermal image with respect to the change of visibility controlled with the burned fas was measured. It was found that the transmission of infrared was not reduced by the burned gas, which could be explained by the long wavelength of infrared ray compared with visible ray. However, the transmission of infrared ray was largely reduced by the combination of burned gas and water mist supplied by sprinkler. This is contrary to the results of calculated transmission through the pure water mist and shows that the transmission of infrared ray is mostly affected by the compounds of water mist and burned gas. In this case, it was found that the uncooled detector which detects $8{\sim}12{\mu}m$ infrared ray is better than cooled detector which detects $3{\sim}5{\mu}m$ infrared ray for fire fighting.

  • The mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of diverse carbonate rocks can be investigated by using VNIRSWIR(visible near infrared-short wavelength infrared) spectroscopic analysis as a rapid, nondestructive, and inexpensive tool. Comparing whole rock analysis to VNIR-SWIR spectroscopic analysis, the analytical method was investigated to estimate CaO contents, mud impurity, and whiteness of carbonate rocks involved in high-grade limestones in the field. We classify typical carbonate rocks in the upper Pungchon Formation in high-grade limestone mine area such as the Gangweon, Chungmu and Baegun mine in the Jeongseon area. The results show that powdered specimen has much higher reflectance than cutted specimen between the same sample. Whiteness is highly correlated with reflectance(0.99) for powdered specimen. The absorption of mineral mixtures shifts in position as a result of the mass ratio of calcite and dolomite in the Chungmu mine by changing to 75:25, 50:50, and 25:75. The absorption peak position in carbonate mixtures is highly correlated with CaO contents(0.98~0.99). Based on color system, the carbonate rocks are grouped into (milky) white, light grey, light brown, grey, and dark grey. The absorption peak position shifts from 2340 nm to 2320 nm as CaO contents decrease from 55.86 wt.% to 29.71 wt.%. We confirmed that absorption peak position shifts depending on the amount of Ca, which is bonded to $CO{_3}^{-2}$, Mg, and Fe contents replacing Ca. This result suggests that CaO contents in carbonate rocks can be considered to quantitative analysis in the field by spectroscopic analysis.

  • Laser optoacoustic technique has been employed to obtain the gas phase absorption spectra of 1-chloronaphthalene, 3-chlorobiphenyl, and 2,5,2'-trichlorobiphenyl in conjunction with a gas chromatograph and a Helmholtz resonator at the various $CO_2$ laser wavelengths. Raman spectra of 1-chloronaphthalene, 4-chlorobiphenyl, and 4,4'-dichlorobiphenyl in condensed phase have been also obtained. The optoacoustic measurement of the infrared absorption in gas phase has been shown to be of value in monitoring the environmental pollutants.
