  • We collected ciliate species from diverse habitats (brackish water, marine water, and terrestrial ecosystems) composed of estuarine, coast, and moss samples during 2017-2018 in Korea. The morphology and infraciliature of these species were examined and identified based on the observations of living cells and protargol impregnated specimens. Of the ciliates we identified, we described eight unrecorded species in Korea as followings: class Heterotrichea - Condylostoma vorax, Peritromus kahli; class Protocruziea - Protocruzia labiata; class Spirotrichea - Hemiamphisiella granulifera; class Litostomatea - Loxophyllum chinense; class Phyllopharyngea - Trochilioides recta; and class Oligohymenophorea -Cohnilembus verminus, Uronemella filificum. Among them, Protocruzia labiata is a poorly known species. In this paper, we provide the improved diagnoses and brief descriptions of the species with their microphotographs. The taxonomic classifications of the eight species are summarized as six classes, eight orders, five families, and eight genera. These voucher slides with protargol impregnated specimens have been deposited in the National Institutes.

  • We investigated five ciliate species from soil, estuary and marine habitats in eastern Gangwon-do Province, South Korea. Morphology was studied through observation of living specimens as well as silver preparations. The species were classified into five genera, five families, five orders and four classes. Aspidisca aculeata, Hemiurosoma similis, Litonotus alpestris, Stentor roeselii and Vorticella infusionum are first records in Korea, and among them, the genus Hemiurosoma is recorded for the first time. Here, we provide short descriptions with microphotographs of these species.

  • Three species of oxvtrichid hypotrichs collected from the Han River on Sune 6, and August 26, 1992 have been cultured at laboratory. Thev were identified as Oxvtricha hvmenostoma Stokes, .1887, 0. hoemutoplasma Blatterer and Foissner, 1990 and Tochvsomu pellionellum (Muller, 1773). These species are reported for the first time from Korea. Morphological and biometrical studies were carried out by observing both wild and cultured cells and the infraciliature of silver stained specimens. The present species were redescribed and analvzed biometricallv.

  • Eight samples, collected from six moss-covered soil and two freshwater samples, were examined to determine ciliate diversity in Korea. Based on the morphology of living and stained specimens, thirteen ciliate species, previously unrecorded in Korea, were identified. These specimens were classified to four classes, seven orders, ten families, and twelve genera. Of these genera, the following six were first records in Korea: Bresslauides, Dexiotricha, Glaucoma, Paragastrostyla, Sathrophilus, and Trithigmostoma. Here, we provide a brief description of the morphology of these 13 taxa along with microphotographs and notes.

  • We collected ciliates from terrestrial and aquatic habitats in Korea. Morphology was examined based on observations of both living and stained specimens. As a result of the observations, we found 24 previously unrecorded ciliate species to Korea. The morphology of these species are briefly described here: Tracheloraphis dracontoides, Condylostoma arenarium, Aspidisca steini, Australocirrus aspoecki, Sterkiella tricirrata, Stylonychia lemnae, Wallackia bujoreani, Bakuella marina, Anteholosticha sigmoidea, Holosticha pullaster, Urostyla grandis grandis, Chaenea vorax, Enchelys gasterosteus, Phialina salinarum, Mesodinium pulex, Aegyria oliva, Bryometopus pseudochilodon, Pinacocoleps tesselatus, Urozona buetschlii, Colpidium colpoda, Campanella umbellaria, Pseudovorticella difficilis, Zoothamnium parahiketes and Z. plumula. Among these 24 ciliates, S. tricirrata and U. grandis grandis were studied based on both the morphology and the morphogenesis.

  • The oxytrichid ticks collected from the cultivated field in Yonchon-gun, Misan-myon Kyonggi-do near Seoul, Korea and the moss-covered soils on the old castle walls in Namhansansons, Kwansiu-gun, Kyonggi-do near Seoul, Korea were Identified as Histriculus cavicola (Kahl, 19351 and H. muscorum Kahl, 1932. These two species were redescribed with illustrations. The description was based on the obsenration of living specimens, protarsol impregnated specimens and biometric analysis. These are reported for the first time from Korea and distinguished from the other congeneric species by the following characteristics: the former has 4 macronuclei, 4 micronuclei, 5 transverse cirri and rather inconspicuous marginal cirri, while the latter, 2 macronuclei, 2 micronuclei, 4 transverse cirri and conspicuous marginal cirri, respecitvely.

  • We identified 22 ciliate species, including five unrecorded ciliate species, from temporary ponds on a grass lawn. The five unrecorded species are as follows: class Nassophorea - Pseudomicrothorax agilis Mermod, 1914, Nassula exigua Kahl, 1931, class Colpodea - Cyrtolophosis mucicola Stokes, 1885, Maryna ovata (Gelei, 1950) Foissner, 1993, and class Spirotrichea - Meseres corlissi Petz & Foissner, 1992. Most of these 22 ciliate species disappeared from a raw culture within a few days (probably encystment), and a few cells were available from some species that resulted in incomplete identifications (e.g., genus-level). About the unrecorded five ciliate species, they are small in size (<60 ㎛ in vivo), and two of them live in a hyaline dwelling-tube, which is easily deserted by a cell with a stress. Their taxonomic classification is summarized as three classes, five orders, five families, and five genera. Here, we provide brief descriptions, micrographs of their morphology, and some remarks.

  • The morphology and infraciliature of three newly recorded Aspidisca species in Korea, two collected from the eastern coast and one collected from Jeju Island, were investigated in vivo and after protargol impregnation. The three species are as follows: A. dentata Kahl, 1928, A. hexeris Quennerstedt, 1869, and A. polystyla Stein, 1859. The three species are characterized by having a "polystyla-arrangement" of frontoventral cirri: 1) A. dentata is characterized by having a broadly rotund body shape, a distinct peristomial spur, and a dorsal thorn; 2) A. hexeris is characterized by a broadly oval body shape, four projections along the left margin of body, and the single peristomial spur; and 3) A. polystyla has the broadly rotund body shape, transverse cirri each split into several parts (especially in vivo), and lacking of the peristomial spur. Among them, A. dentata and A. polystyla are poorly known and lack morphological description based on silver staining. In the present study, we provide a brief diagnosis, remarks, and photomicrographs.
