  • Purpose : This study was designed to develop an instrument that could be used for comprehensive and effective need assessment for patients with cancer. Methods : In the first phase, a conceptual framework for the instrument was established by Wingate & Lackey (1989). In the second phase, the preliminary instrument was drawn up through a review of the literature and in consultation with three professors in Nursing. In the third phase validity and reliability of the preliminary instrument were tested as follows; 1) an expert validity test of the preliminary instrument was done by nine head nurses and charge nurses who had over ten years experience caring for patients with cancer at Wonju Christian Hospital. 2) A construct validity test and reliability test was done for the instrument by 116 staff nurses selected by convience sampling from hospitals located in Kang-Won, Kyoung-Ki, and Choong-Chung Provinces. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 10.0 WIN program. For the factors of the instrument, factor analysis was used. The reliability of the scale was analyzed by Cronbach's alpha. Results : The results of the experts' test of validity, showed that, of 32 items, only one item had less than 55.4%. It was then deleted and a total of 31 items was selected. On the basis of the results of the factor analysis, the following six components were identified: physiological, informational, spiritual, and emotional needs, available resources, and legal/financial needs. These factors explained 61.8% of the variance. In the factor analysis, the first factor (physiological needs) and the second factor (informational needs) explained 25.4% and 10.9% of the variance respectively, which were major factors for the needs of patients with cancer in Korea. Cronbach' alpha for the scale was .90 indicating internal reliability. Conclusion : This instrument can be effectively utilized for assessment of needs of patients with cancer in Korea. Use of the needs assessment instrument developed in this study will allow nurses to develop nursing interventions that provide comprehensiveness and continuity in meeting the needs of patients with cancer.

  • It is the prime importance of the information and the reference-librarians to better understand the communication functions of the library since they are the ones to whom the library users come first with their informational needs. Reference librarians often have the problem of providing information to those who may have little experience with, or interest in the library. There is also a problem of finding out what the person really wants, not what he says he wants. Therefore, the interaction between the librarian and the user involves a highly complex activity of communication with each other even before the actual search begins. Reference librarians cannot perform to any degree of success without comprehension of the general patterns and processes of communication in information seeking. Nonverbal as well as verbal transmittal process on the part of both librarians and patrons should not be overlooked. Some of the difficulties and barriers of library communication are brought so that possible cures and improvement may be sought. The basic purpose of the reference interview through which this interpersonal communication takes place is for the reference specialist to enable to link the needs of the patron with potential resource of the library. The writer firmly believes that this importance of the process be taught as well as the materials in reference service regardless of the level of the course offered in library science department.

  • With recent advancement in informational sciences, educational systems are undergoing a revolutionary facelift on how students attain their education. These developments have diminished the traditional method of teaching and learning and have improved the overall quality of the educational environment. They have also ignited the birth of cyber-education in which students have the flexibility and responsibility on what and when to study, thus providing a greater freedom to control one's education. Cyber-educational environment not only requires physical hardware but also an organizational structural component and most importantly, a software component that drives and gives the student management power to tailor their studies based upon their educational requirements. Due to the fact that individuals learn and develop at different rates, one of the important features of a cyber-educational program will be its ability to adjust and customized to individual needs and requirements. In this thesis, a novel software which encompasses these ideas was designed and developed. This program allows the individual more flexibility and management of courses based on their ability and needs. Because the software customizes to one's ability and it allows the student to advance at a more comfortable pace, it boosts the student's confidence and desire to learn. In the future, new and improved programs similar to the one developed here will further enhance the cyber-educational environment and will undoubtedly improve the overall quality of student's education.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a framework for evaluating security levels in hospitals. We classify security indicators into administrative, technical and physical safeguards. The security evaluation model for hospital information systems was applied to three general hospitals. The analysis of the results showed a low security level in information systems. In particular, requirements for administrative and physical safeguards were very low. Hospitals need strict security policies more than other organizations because their information systems contain patients' highly confidential data. The evaluation model developed in this study can be used for guidelines and as a checklist for hospitals. The security evaluation in hospital informational systems needs to be an essential element of hospital evaluation.

  • Toe public library may perform a social good only when its objectives are adequate to the community's needs. The present purpose of the public library in the Korean Library Act has no direct concern for our social needs from its very beginning because it was not created in response to our social needs but transplanted from American principles. It is, therefore. difficult to expect socially useful output of our public library programs under the present purpose which may be inadequate to our social tradition and needs. This study purposes to examine validity of the present purpose of the public library in the Korean Library Act, in the light of our community needs and our own library tradition. The methods employed to achieve the purpose of the study are (1) to survey needs of the library frequenters through questionnaire, and interviews with the public librarians in Seoul, (2) to gather the statistical data relevant to, and supporting, the hypothesis, and (3) to compare our social background with that of the United States of which the American purpose, a model for our present purpose, came out. The conclusion is as follows: A. The idea to induce people to pull themselves upward by providing for all the members of the community access to the world's best books shelved in the public library should be abandoned. The reasons are (1) that the idea is alien in our public library tradition, (2) that little demand of the community goes with the idea, and (3) that reading outside the library has come into wide practice, thanks to recent increase in individual income and that in publications. B. That the public library maintains fiction and other recreational reading materials is meaningless in the light of the community needs. These are the two explanations supporting the thesis. (1) The "uplift" theory has proved inoperative and people apparently do not progress from, light fiction to more respectable fare. (2) The conviction that fiction and other recreational reading materials keep the middling classes from the "vicious" entertainments maintaining order in the community by giving them a harmless source of recreation has lost its significance as the modern society provides a number of choices in recreation: television is an obvious example. C. The nature of the informational needs of the community has radically changed, so radically as to require substantial changes in the outlook, collections, and services of the public library, which is :slow in adopting itself to the new social surroundings in Korea. D. 92.2 per Cent of the present frequenters of the public library are high school and college students. Since the library is to meet the existing community needs it should turn its attention to the student group, and develop the means to serve it better, not the "theoretical group of specialists who do not come to "the public library. E. In revision of the purpose of the public library, priority of each objective should be given. The priorities in the last analysis are research and information. culture, recreation in that order.

  • This study is to improve the design of bus transfer information that can be substantially used. This study has been processed using the following steps. First, I tried to define the information design and way-finding information design. Secondly, I have researched several case studies, and considered solutions. Finally, I evaluated way-finding maps through pair-wise comparisons, and drew needs through an interview. As the result of this research, there were some problems in font size, improper space between letters and non-consistent information. To solve these problems, the information has to be clear using easy symbols to be well-recognized by citizens. Also, the font size needs to be decided by a calculation of minimum legible size of letters. Lastly, a value contrast between a background color and a letter color needs to be applied more than 70 percent for better visibility. The study is expected to be used as a reference which helps informational design to be developed.

  • This paper empirically examines factors that potentially influence the success of a Web-based semantic search engine. A research model has been proposed that shows the impact of quality-related factors upon the effectiveness of a semantic search engine, based on DeLone and McLean's(2003) information systems success model. An empirical study has been conducted to test hypotheses formulated around the research model, and statistical methods were applied to analyze gathered data and draw conclusions. Implications for academics and practitioners are offered based on the findings of the study. The proposed model includes three quality dimensions of a Web-based semantic search engine-namely, information quality, system quality and service quality. These three dimensions each have measures designed to collectively assess the respective dimension. The model is intended to examine the relationship between measures of these quality dimensions and measures of two dependent constructs, including individuals' net benefit and user satisfaction. Individuals' net benefit was measured by the extent to which the user's information needs were adequately met, whereas user satisfaction was measured by a combination of the perceived satisfaction with search results and the perceived satisfaction with the overall system. A total of 23 hypotheses have been formulated around the model, and a questionnaire survey has been conducted using a functional semantic search website created by KT and Hakia, so as to collect data to validate the model. Copies of a questionnaire form were handed out in person to 160 research associates and employees working in the area of designing and developing semantic search engines. Those who received the form, 148 respondents returned valid responses. The survey form asked respondents to use the given website to answer questions concerning the system. The results of the empirical study have indicated that, of the three quality dimensions, information quality was found to have the strongest association with the effectiveness of a Web-based semantic search engine. This finding is consistent with the observation in the literature that the aspects of the information quality should serve as a basis for evaluating the search outcomes from a semantic search engine. Measures under the information quality dimension that have a positive effect on informational gratification and user satisfaction were found to be recall and currency. Under the system quality dimension, response time and interactivity, were positively related to informational gratification. On the other hand, only one measure under the service quality dimension, reliability was found to have a positive relationship with user satisfaction. The results were based on the seven hypotheses that have been accepted. One may wonder why 15 out of the 23 hypotheses have been rejected and question the theoretical soundness of the model. However, the correlations between independent variables and dependent variables came out to be fairly high. This suggests that the structural equation model yielded results inconsistent with those of coefficient analysis, because the structural equation model intends to examine the relationship among independent variables as well as the relationship between independent variables and dependent variables. The findings offer some useful implications for owners of a semantic search engine, as far as the design and maintenance of the website is concerned. First, the system should be designed to respond to the user's query as fast as possible. Also it should be designed to support the search process by recommending, revising, and choosing a search query, so as to maximize users' interactions with the system. Second, the system should present search results with maximum recall and currency to effectively meet the users' expectations. Third, it should be capable of providing online services in a reliable and trustworthy manner. Finally, effective increase in user satisfaction requires the improvement of quality factors associated with a semantic search engine, which would in turn help increase the informational gratification for users. The proposed model can serve as a useful framework for measuring the success of a Web-based semantic search engine. Applying the search engine success framework to the measurement of search engine effectiveness has the potential to provide an outline of what areas of a semantic search engine needs improvement, in order to better meet information needs of users. Further research will be needed to make this idea a reality.

  • The medical profession has the problem of lack of bioethics, due to the expansion of capitalism and mannerism after modernization. Therefore, the need of education of bioethics is increasing, however, the cramming system of education is insufficient for promoting personal morals. So the author studied ancient and present bioethics and searched for the cause of current bioethics absence and the method of overcoming it. Especially, studying the vocational features of oriental medical doctor as profession and the problems of education of bioethics in oriental medical college, the author searched for the directions of educations of bioethics. The conclusions are as follows. The current medical profession have ethical problems because of social moral hazard, evils of capitalism, change of doctor-patient relationship due to expansion of consumerism, limitation of autonomy due to commercialize of hospitals, decrease of knowledge monopolism of professionals, moral indifference and frailty, and a missdeed preference. The education of bioethics needs "Rest's 4 components" but the current education of bioethics in oriental medicine college lacks of time and is composed of the cramming system of education. So it needs various types of education system. Morals are subjective and discretionary personal character. Therefore, informational education is insufficient for enhancing morals and complex education for various personal attainments (various social indirect experience, philosophical speculation, mental serenity) is needed. It has to be done on the basis of educational method by experience not lecture, long term expectation, and basic understanding of bioethics.
