  • WE consider the stabilization of a class of multivariable nonlinear system using variable structure output feedback control. A high-gain observer is used to estimate state variable while rejecting the effect of the disturbances. We design a globally bounded output feedback variable structure controller that semi-globally stabilize the closed-loop system, while state variables do not exhibit a peaking.

  • Pole assignment controller with variable forgetting factor is generalizaed to allow the output and/or input variance to be reduced. The algorithm can give significant reductions in variance for little extra computational effort and is presented for servo-tracking using leat-squares estimation. Moreover, the use of a variable forgetting factor with correct choice of information bound can avoid 'blowing-up' of the covariance matrix of the estimates and subsequent unstable control.

  • This paper defines an improvement for estimating the population mean of a study variable using auxiliary information and known values of certain population parameter(s), when there is a non-response in a study as well as on auxiliary variables. Under a simple random sampling without a replacement (SRSWOR) scheme, the mean square error (MSE) of all proposed estimators are obtained and compared with each other. Numerical illustration is also given.

  • This paper describes the design of a variable rate QPSK demodulator for digital satellite TV system. This true variable-rate demodulator employs a unique architecture to realize an all digital synchronization and detection algorithm. Data-flow based design approach enabled a seamless transition from high level design optimization to physical layout. The demodulator has been integrated with Viterbi decoder, de-interleaver, and Ree-Solomon decoder to make a single chip Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) receiver. The receiver IC has been fabricated with a 0.5mm CMOS TLM process and proved fully functional in a real-world set-up.

  • A new control scheme for the variable-structure control system using new time-varying switching variable is presented in this paper. It is proposed to have new algorithm for reducing the reaching time on a switching hyperplane by modifying the Morgan's algorithm. From the results of the simulation, it is concluded the proposed control algorithm yields smaller control inputs (without disturbance) and ripples (with disturbance) than that obtained by Morgan's algorithm in the steady-state. This control algorithm can be applied to proper control systems having sensitive effects on disturbances, due to the robustness.

  • An important problem in cluster analysis is the selection of variables that define cluster structure that also eliminate noisy variables that mask cluster structure; in addition, outlier detection is a fundamental task for cluster analysis. Here we provide an automated K-means clustering process combined with variable selection and outlier identification. The Automated K-means clustering procedure consists of three processes: (i) automatically calculating the cluster number and initial cluster center whenever a new variable is added, (ii) identifying outliers for each cluster depending on used variables, (iii) selecting variables defining cluster structure in a forward manner. To select variables, we applied VS-KM (variable-selection heuristic for K-means clustering) procedure (Brusco and Cradit, 2001). To identify outliers, we used a hybrid approach combining a clustering based approach and distance based approach. Simulation results indicate that the proposed automated K-means clustering procedure is effective to select variables and identify outliers.   • Association rule mining searches for interesting relationships among Items in a given database. Association rules are frequently used by retail stores to assist in marketing, advertising, floor placement, and inventory control. There are three primary quality measures for association rule support and confidence and lift. In this paper we present association rule mining based antecedent variables. We call these rules to antecedent association rules. An antecedent variable is a variable that occurs before the independent variable and the dependent variable. For example, in politics, a special interest group may want to support a politician who backs their cause. The group would look for a candidate who supports their views and support his election. Once in office, the politician would then conduct policy that supports the interest group.

  • In the control of the robotic manipulators, the variable structure control method for the set point Regualation has an advantage of the insensitivity about parameter variations and disturbances. When the robotic manipulatores are controlled by a point-to-point scheme, no path constraint is considered. Thus, the variable structure control method will be effectively applied only if the trajectory of the robot hand is estimated precisely. In this paper, the joint trajectories in the joint space and the hand trajectory in the cartesian space are calculated by the variable structure control method, and an algorithm is suggested to elaborate the deviation error of the robot hand from a straight line path. The result of this study will become a base of the effective path planning about robotic manipulators with the variable structure control concept.

  • Cyber counseling, one of the most compatible type of consultation for the information society, enables people to reveal their mental agonies and private problems anonymously, since it does not require face-to-face interview between a counsellor and a client. However, there are few cyber counseling centers which provide high quality and trustworthy service, although the number of cyber counseling center has highly increased. Therefore, this paper is intended to enable an appropriate consultation for each client by analyzing client propensity using Bayesian variable selection. Bayesian variable selection is superior to stepwise regression analysis method in finding out a regression model. Stepwise regression analysis method, which has been generally used to analyze individual propensity in linear regression model, is not efficient since it is hard to select a proper model for its own defects. In this paper, based on the case database of current cyber counseling centers in the web, we will analyze clients' propensities using Bayesian variable selection to enable individually target counseling and to activate cyber counseling programs.
