  • The conventional best relay selection based on all the channel information for the first and second hops in dual-hop systems has a large consumption of resources for channel feedback. In this paper, we analyze the average bit error rate for partial relay selection based on the channel information only for the first hop in dual-hop decode-and-forward relaying systems, where we assume independent Rayleigh fading channels. In particular, we provide an exact and closed-form expression for the average bit error rate of M-ary QAM. Also, through numerical investigation, the performance of the partial relay selection is compared with the performance of the best relay selection, and the performance is evaluated for different numbers of relays and various average channel power ratios for the first and second hops.

  • Currently, the quantize-and-forward (QF) scheme with high order modulation and quantization has rather high complexity and it is thus impractical, especially in multiple relay cooperative communications. To overcome these deficiencies, an improved low complex QF scheme is proposed by the combination of the low order binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation and the 1-bit and 2-bit quantization, respectively. In this scheme, the relay selection is optimized by the best relay position for best bit-error-rate (BER) performance, where the relays are located closely to the destination node. In addition, an optimal power allocation is also suggested on a total power constraint. Finally, the BER and the achievable rate of the low order 1-bit, 2-bit and 3-bit QF schemes are simulated and analyzed. Simulation results indicate that the 3-bit QF scheme has about 1.8~5 dB, 4.5~7.5 dB and 1~2.5 dB performance gains than those of the decode-and-forward (DF), the 1-bit and 2-bit QF schemes, at BER of $10^{-2}$, respectively. For the 2-bit QF, the scheme of the normalized Source-Relay (S-R) distance with 0.9 has about 5dB, 7.5dB, 9dB and 15dB gains than those of the distance with 0.7, 0.5, 0.3 and 0.1, respectively, at BER of $10^{-3}$. In addition, the proposed optimal power allocation saves about 2.5dB much more relay power on an average than that of the fixed power allocation. Therefore, the proposed QF scheme can obtain excellent features, such as good BER performance, low complexity and high power efficiency, which make it much pragmatic in the future cooperative communications.

  • This paper provides an analytic performance evaluation of the bit error rate (BER) of underlay decode-and-forward cognitive networks with best relay selection over Rayleigh multipath fading channels. A generalized BER expression valid for arbitrary operational parameters is firstly presented in the form of a single integral, which is then employed for determining the diversity order and coding gain for different best relay selection scenarios. Furthermore, a novel and highly accurate closed-form approximate BER expression is derived for the specific case where relays are located relatively close to each other. The presented results are rather convenient to handle both analytically and numerically, while they are shown to be in good agreement with results from respective computer simulations. In addition, it is shown that as in the case of conventional relaying networks, the behaviour of underlay relaying cognitive networks with best relay selection depends significantly on the number of involved relays.

  • This paper will focus on improving the performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in Rayleigh fading environments. The proposed technique will use a previously published method that has been shown to improve OFDM performance in independent fading, based on ordered sub-carrier selection. Then, a simple non-iterative method for finding the optimal bit-loading allocation was proposed. It was also based on ordered sub-carrier selection. We compared both of these algorithms to an optimal bit-loading solution to determine their effectiveness in a correlated fading environment. The correlated fading was simulated using the JTC channel models. Our intent was not to create an optimal solution, but to create a low complexity solution that can be used in a wireless environment in which the channel conditions change rapidly and that require a simple algorithm for fast bit loading.

  • Cooperative transmission is an effective solution to improve the performance of wireless communications over fading channels without the need for physical co-located antenna arrays. In this paper, selection combining is used at the destination instead of maximal ratio combing to optimize the structure of destination and to reduce power consumption in selective decode-and-forward relaying networks. For an arbitrary number of relays, an exact and closed-form expression of the bit error rate (BER) is derived for M-PAM, M-QAM, and M-PSK, respectively, in both independent identically distributed and independent but not identically distributed Rayleigh fading channels. A variety of simulations are performed and show that they match exactly with analytic ones. In addition, our results show that the optimum number of relays depend not only on channel conditions (operating SNRs) but also on modulation schemes which to be used.

  • A strength of BitTorrent, which is widely used for file sharing today, is due to its peer selection mechanism which is designed to encourage peers to contribute data. In the peer selection phase in BitTorrent, peers to upload the file in a swarm are selected by determining which peers upload the most to themselves. However, the number of peers to upload (i.e., number of unchoked peers) is fixed to four in its peer selection mechanism of BitTorrent, which yields inefficiency because the situation of the swarm may vary frequently (e.g., number of peers in the swarm, download rates, and upload rates). In this paper, we analyze the swarming system performance when the number of unchoked in BitTorrents is not static, but dynamic. For empirical investigation, we established a testbed in Seoul National University by modifying an open-source BitTorrent client, which is popular. Through our experiments, we show that an adaptive mechanism to adjust the number of unchoked peers considering the situation of the swarm is needed to improve the performance of BitTorrent.

  • This letter analyzes the performance of a two-hop MIMO multiuser relay network with a fixed gain amplify-and-forward protocol and antenna selection at the transmitter and receiver. A new expression for the cumulative distribution function of the highest instantaneous end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio is derived. Based on the above result, closed-form expressions for outage probability and bit error rate are presented. Also, the diversity order of the system is determined. Finally, computer simulations are compared to the analytical results, and insights and observations are provided.

  • This paper provides closed form expressions for the evaluation of the end-to-end outage probability, symbol error rate, bit error rate and average capacity of the partial-based Decode-and-Forward (DF) relay selection scheme with an arbitrary number of relays. In a comparison with the performance of systems that exploit Amplify-and-Forward (AF), it can be seen that the performance of our proposed protocol converges to that of partial-based AF relay selection in high SNR regime. We also perform Monte-Carlo simulations to validate the analysis.

  • In this paper, we propose an optimal relay selection scheme for decode-and-forward relaying systems. The optimal relay selection minimizes the number of time slots used to relay source's signal and maximizes an end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio. However, decode-and-forward relaying systems require additional overhead for the optimal relay selection. Assuming independent and identically distributed Rayleigh fading channels, we provide exact and closed-form expressions for the outage probability of capacity and the bit error rate for decode-and-forward relaying systems with the optimal relay selection. It is shown that the analytic results are perfectly matched with the simulated ones. When the numbers of relay nodes are 2, 4, and 8, and the numbers of time slots for overhead are 1, 2, and 4, respectively, the proposed system achieves 1 dB, 2 dB, and 3 dB gains at 1% bit error rate, respectively, and 0.5 dB, 4 dB, and 12 dB gains at 1% outage probability for 1 bps/Hz, respectively, over the conventional decode-and-forward relaying system.
