The goal of this study is to examine on reasoning and search for construction of diagnosis ontology as a knowledge base of diagnosis expert system in oriental medicine. Expert system is a field of artificial intelligence. It is a system to acquire information with diverse reasoning methods after putting expert's knowledge in computer systematically. A typical model of expert system consists of knowledge base and reasoning & explanatory structure offering conclusion with the knowledge. To apply ontology as knowledge base to expert system practically, consideration on reasoning and search should be together. Therefore, this study compared and examined reasoning, search with diagnosis process in oriental medicine. Reasoning is divided into Rule-based reasoning and Case-based reasoning. The former is divided into Forward chaining and Backward chaining. Because of characteristics of diagnosis, sometimes Forward chaining or backward chaining are required. Therefore, there are a lot of cases that Hybrid chaining is effective. Case-based reasoning is a method to settle a problem in the present by comparing with the past cases. Therefore, it is suitable to diagnosis fields with abundant cases. Search is sorted into Breadth-first search, Depth-first search and Best-first search, which have respectively merits and demerits. To construct diagnosis ontology to be applied to practical expert system, reasoning and search to reflect diagnosis process and characteristics should be considered.
Expert systems which represent the appllication of artificial intelligence research are now nearly 20 years old. It is said that the present technology together with ever- increasing computing applicability of Combined Hypertext-Expert System Techniques to the design of reinforced concrete structures. Hypertext systems allow the user to control the system while expert systems alone don't give the user any control over the system. Therefore the combination of these two techniques, offered by KnowledgePro, may bring us closer to real user-expert communication. The system developed in this work offers information on design in general by reorganizing ACI Manual 318-89, detailed stress analysis and cross sectional design of simple PC/RC beams and optimum design of reinforced concrete building frames. The system also includes the author's earlier work on guidance to identify types of cracks in concrete. It is also includes the author's earlier work on guidance to identify types of cracks in concrete. It is also demonstrated how well and conveniently existing programs can be used by reorganizing the user manuals in the context of hypertext.
Early detection and diagnosis of incipient induction machine faults increases machinery availability, reduces consequential damage, and improves operational efficiency. However, fault detection using analytical methods is not always possible because it requires perfect knowledge of a process model. This paper proposes a neural network based expert system for diagnosing problems with induction motors using vibration analysis. The short-time Fourier transform (STFT) is used to process the quasi-steady vibration signals, and the neural network is trained and tested using the vibration spectra. The efficiency of the developed neural network expert system is evaluated. The results show that a neural network expert system can be developed based on vibration measurements acquired on-line from the machine.
In this paper, a fuzzy expert system is developed for fault diagnoisis of a drum-type boiler system in fossil power plants. The develped fuzzy espert system is composed of knowledge base, fuzzification module, knowledge base process module, knowledge base management module, inference module, and linguistic approximation module. The main objective of the fuzzy expert system is to check the states of the system including the drum level and detect faults such as the feedwater flow sensor fault, feedwater flow control valve fault, and water wall bube rupture. The fuzzy expert system diagnoses faults using process values, manipulated values, and knowledge base which is built via interviews and questionaries with the experts on the plant operations. Finally, the validity of the developed fuzzy expert system is shown via experiments using the digital simulator for boiler system is Seoul Power Plant Unit 4.
In this study, we designed the expert system for the diagnosis of stroke. The causes of stroke in central nervous systems are very diverse, so a doctor who treats the patients with stroke must have the expert knowledge for the quick and correct diagnosis and for the adequate medical management. But the primary physician who engaged in the primary care of the patient with stroke does not have the export knowledge for the stroke. So, we need to develop the expert system for assisting the diagnosis of stroke. Also the diagnosis system can be used as simulator for the medical students who study the neurology. In this study, we developed the diagnosis expert system that offer a pathological name provided by artificial neural networks. And we designed the inference engine and interfaces. The artificial neural network is a system that provide a possible diagnosis of stroke. We implemented the system using Windows2000 Server, IIS5.0 and ASP.
Techniques from decision analysis and expert system have both been extensively used in the development of computerized decision aids, although each discipline uses different approaches in knowledge (information or input) acquisition, representation, and problem solving methodology. From the perspective of many types of practical decision aiding applications, both normative decision aids and expert system technology have significant limitations. Many research efforts have been exerted toward complementing the one's deficiency with the other's possible techniques or vice versa. In this paper, among many possible complementary techniques for better decision aiding between decision analysis and expert system, we focus on the using prescriptive methodology of decision analysis which incorporates user's preference knowledge for conflict resolution in rule based expert system.
In Knowledge Management Systems (KMS), tacit knowledge which is usually possessed as forms like know-how, experiences, and etc. is hard to be systemized while managing explicit knowledge is comparatively easy using information technology such as databases, Recent researches in knowledge management have shown that it is more applicable in many ways to provide expert search mechanisms in KMS to pinpoint experts in the organizations with searched expertise so that users can contact them for help, In this paper, we propose an intelligent expert search framework to provide search capabilities for experts in similar or related fields according to the user's needs. In enabling intelligent expert searches, Fuzzy Abstraction Hierarchy (FAH) framework has been adopted, through' which finding experts with similar or related expertise is possible according to the subject field hierarchy defined in the system. To test applicability and practicality of the proposed framework, the prototype system, Knowledge Portal for Researchers in Science and Technology, was developed.
This paper presents a study on application of expert system technique for the diagnosis of fire-causes in plants. A need is recognized for new methods to diagnose exactly the causes of fires without the help of the human experts. To cope with the difficulty, the expert system techiuque is applied to this area. The expert system suggested in this paper is developed to infer the causes of fires(or, ignition source ) by using the information drawn from the circumstances in fire. For the convenience of inference, ignition sources we classified into eight types ; elecoic spark, adiabatic compression, welding spark, material of high temperature, impact and friction, spontaneous ignition, naked fire, and static electricity. The knowledge base is composed of the rule base and dynamic database, which contain the rules and facts obtained by the expenence in this area, respectively. Both depth-first search and backward chaining schemes are used in reasoning process. This expert system is written in an artificial intelligence language "PROLOG", and its availability is demonstrated through the case study.
Expert systems represent the application of artificial intelligence research that is at least 10-15 years old. It may well take another 5-10 years before the present technology is exploited by industry. The objective of this paper is to show the applicability of Combined Hypertext-Expert System Techniques to the professionals working in the construction industry. Expert systems alone don't give the user any control over the system. Hypertext systems that focus only on displaying messages have the opposite problem. While they allow the user to control the system., the only control the system designer has is in setting up the hypertext links. Therefore the combination of these two techniques, offered by KnowledgePro, may bring us closer to real user-expert communication. The system developed in this work offers information on ACI Manual concerning various problem areas in concrete practice, consultation about mix design of concrete and guidance to identify types of cracks in concrete. Once the type of crack is identified through the rule-based knowledge, the system provides the user with remedial measures through the control of the user.
In managing organizational tacit knowledge, recent researches have shown that it is more applicable in many ways to provide expert search mechanisms in KMS to pinpoint experts in the organizations with searched expertise. In this paper, we propose an intelligent expert search framework to provide search capabilities for experts in similar or related fields according to the user's information needs. In enabling intelligent expert searches, Fuzzy Abstraction Hierarchy (FAH) framework has been adopted, through which finding experts with similar or related expertise is possible according to the subject field hierarchy defined in the system. To improve FAH, a text categorization approach called Vector Space Model is utilized. To test applicability and practicality of the proposed framework, the prototype system, "Knowledge Portal for Researchers in Science and Technology" sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of Korea, was developed.
