Types and Roles of Visualization Materials in Elementary Science Textbook focusing on Infographics (인포그래픽을 중심으로 살펴본 초등 과학교과서 시각화 자료의 유형과 역할)

  • The visualization materials in science textbooks are very important in students' learning. Recent visualizations are increasingly emphasizing the importance of infographic visualizations. The purpose of this study is to analyze the visualization materials in $5^{th}$ and $6^{th}$ elementary science textbook focusing on infographics. Visualization materials were classified into infographic and simple illustration. Infographics were classified into 8 sub-types. Findings are as follows. First, infographics were 19.0%, and simple illustrations were 81.0% among elementary textbooks' visualization materials. The portion of infographic varied by content areas. In Biology and Earth Science area, the portions of infographic were high. Second, several types of infographics were used in elementary science textbooks. Timeline infographic were the most frequent, and emphasis infographic, concept mapping infographic, comparison infographic were used frequently. The most frequent types of infographic were different by content area. Third, infographics used more than simple illustrations in the role of concept explanation. Educational implications on science textbook's infographics were discussed.

Effect of infographic of TV news on audience's memory and comprehension (TV뉴스의 인포그래픽이 수용자의 기억과 이해에 미치는 영향)

  • This experimental research explores the effect of infographic, visual element of TV news, on audience's memory and comprehension. For this experimental research, 2 groups of subjects composed of 87 university students were exposed to two different types of TV news, one group was exposed to news with infographic, the other group was exposed to news without infographic. and questions which were designed to measure recognition memory, recall memory, and comprehension, were asked and analysed. This research found that subjects who watched news with infographic showed higher degree of recall memory and comprehension than those who watched news without infographic. however effect of infographic on audience's recognition memory could not be found.

An Analysis of Science Magazine in the View of Infographic (인포그래픽 관점을 이용한 과학 잡지 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the Korean science magazine, Science Donga providing scientific facts, phenomenons, and issues with infographic for the readers by time series analysis and to search for the application of infographic on the science education. The criteria for the infographic analysis of Science Donga consisted of three categories such as storytelling type, visual perception, and framework level because infographic presents complex information quickly and clearly by integrating various images, words, and graphics. We found that the articles emphasized by including image about science issue have been published from 1986 to 2014. Particularly, after 2008, the articles including infographic sharply rose. So we set up 2008 as $T_c$(Critical time point). The articles including infographic after 2008 have been more variously distributed and frequently used in storytelling types category such as location, time, number, connection, function, and process based infographic, in visual perception of Gestalt Theory such as proximity, similarity, continuation, and closure than before 2008. Lastly, in framework level category, location, time, number, and process based infographic mainly had total range level but function and connection based infographic changed in the framework level. The three features about storytelling type, visual perception, framework level are important changes to influence $T_c$ in the infographic analysis about Science Donga. Through the results of this study, we analyzed the feature of change on infographic from 1986 to 2014. Thus, we hope that the results suggest a basic criteria for making materials including infographic in science education.

Effect of Infographic Instruction to Promote Elementary Students' Use of Scientific Model (초등학생들의 과학적 모델 사용 활성화를 위한 인포그래픽 수업의 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of infographic instruction to promote the use of the scientific model in the 'lens' unit of elementary science textbooks. The participants were $6^{th}$ grade students(n=53) of G elementary school in G city, Gyeongsangnam-do. For this study, the lesson plan of the 'lens' unit consisted of three steps as investigation of students' prior concept about the lens, scientific model construction activity, and infographic construction activity. We then analyzed the results of this study from three perspectives: the scientific concept, scientific model, and infographic. Before the lesson, students focused on the external shape and material of the lens in prior concept of it. However, after the scientific model construction activity and infographic construction activity, students' scientific concept about the lens improved in the categories of features of lens, features of glasses, light path, and applications of the lens. In terms of the scientific model, use of type and frequency of scientific model increased more in the infographic construction activity than the scientific construction model activity. Also, in terms of infographic, the two infographic types as function based infographic and connection based infographic used more than non-infographic in the infographic construction activity. Also, the frequency of Gestal theory's visual perception increased more in the infographic construction activity than the scientific model construction activity.

  • 본 논문에서는 코로나-19에 대한 국내외 코로나 확진자 정보에 대한 Infographic 제공 방법 개발을 제안한다. 코로나-19에 대한 국내외 코로나 정보는 행정안전부에서 운영하는 공공 데이터 포털의 open API를 사용함으로써 신뢰성 있는 정보를 바탕으로 일반적으로 Text 형식으로 제공되는 코로나-19 정보를 다양한 Infographic 방법으로 제시하여 사용자에게 보다 효과적으로 정보를 제공할 수 있도록 개발하였다.

  • This study was conducted to consider application methods of infographic that corresponds to the educational goals of English subject, which is applied with different teaching and learning standards than other subjects. The aim of this study is to analyze the types and the characteristics of 'infographic completed by know-how learning', in other words, 'User behaviors involved infographic', which is frequently used in English textbook. Based on an analysis according to the teaching and learning standards, infographic used in English textbook were suggested in three types, which are 'General Concept', 'Significance' and 'Signification' centered infographic. In addition, according to the level of diagram composition, the main visualization attributes were derived as 'Overview', 'Structure', 'Relationships', 'Sequence', 'Transition between states' and 'Messages'. The major findings of this study are as follows: First, it is necessary to conduct a study on diverse display methods for 'Signification-centered infographic' that need to be displayed on the basis of two or more visual attributes. Second, as the purpose of application for applying infographic in English textbook collides with that in information design fields, it is found that verification is required on the educational effects in relation to this aspect.

  • This study is a thesis on motion infographics design trend analysis of the domestic and international Competition award-winning works. The design processes of motion infographic which belongs to information design are divided into information architecture and information visualization. The award-winning works were analyzed by Design elements considered in each design processes. The analysis results showed that the similarity seen between the domestic and international are meaningful for understanding how to communicate by motion infographics and the usefulness of the methods. At the same time, the difference between them showed that the two sides recognized motion infographic differently and the domestic works have the lack of diversity and the uniformity of expression. The results provide information used to further establish strategy of design motion infographics in business and education.

  • 최근 들어 주식시장에 신규 개인투자자들의 유입이 많아지고 있다. 하지만 기본적인 금융에 대한 지식이 부족한 사람들이 많고 기존 서비스들은 금융 혹은 주식에 대한 이해도를 기반으로 직접 분석해야 했다. 이런 사람들을 위해 직접 분석하지 않더라도 투자할 기업을 판단할 수 있는 시각화 정보(Infographics) 서비스를 구현하였다. 필요한 정보를 얻기 위해서 open API를 사용하였는데 API의 특성상 윈도우즈 환경이 필요하여 리눅스와 윈도우즈 서버를 구축하고 서로 다른 OS 환경에서 이종 API를 처리할 수 있도록 개발하였다.

Development of STEAM Program Using the Infographic and 3D Modeling for Creative Problem Solving Ability (창의적 문제해결력 향상을 위한 인포그래픽과 3D모델링을 활용한 STEAM 프로그램 개발)

  • Recently, the Ministry of Education is pursuing various educational reforms for the cultivation of creative talent in preparation for the fourth industrial revolution. In this study, we developed STEAM program using the info-graphic and 3D modeling. As a result of applying the developed STEAM program to 2 classes of 6 grade in ${\circ}{\circ}$ elementary school in Seoul, it showed that creative problem solving ability of all students participating in the program has improved. Particularly, Motivational component has shown the greatest improvement among the creative problem solving ability elements. Through the results of this study, it is expected that various STEAM programs using the infographic and 3D modeling will be developed and applied in the field of elementary school for the cultivation of creative talent with creative thinking ability in preparation for future society.
