  • In this study, retardation behavior of fatigue crack under single overloading of the mixed mode state was experimentally investigated. To produce single overload in the mixed mode I+II state, the compact tension shear (CTS) specimen and loading device were used. The propagation tests for fatigue crack were performed under mode I and mixed-mode loading overloading afterwards. We examined the observed deformation aspects, the variation of fatigue life and crack propagation rate, and the aspects of retardation behavior from tests. The retardation effect of mixed-mode single overload on fatigue crack propagation behavior was smaller than that of mode I single overload. Also the loading modes of variable and constant amplitude loads have influence on the retardation behavior of fatigue cracks.

  • The main purpose of this study is to determine the effect of overlay on the crack propagation. In order to simplify the problem, a cement concrete pavement is modeled as an elastic plate on Winkler foundation. To derive the singular integral equations, the Fourier transform and dislocation density function are used. Lobatto-Chebyshev integration formula, as a numerical method, is used to solve the singular integral equations. The numerical solution of stress intensity factor at the crack tip is derived. In order to examine the effect of overlay for resisting crack propagation, numerical analyses are carried out for a cement concrete pavement with an embedded crack and a concrete pavement with an asphalt overlay. Results show the significant factors that influence the crack propagation.

  • Failure mechanisms of welded joints under fatigue loads are interpreted that multiple collinear surface cracks initiating randomly along the weld toes propagate under the mutual interaction and coalescence of adjacent two cracks. To estimate fatigue crack propagation life for three types of the representative welded joints, i.e. non-load carrying cruciform, cover plate and longitudinal stiffener joint, the stress intensity factors at the front of the surface cracks have to be calculated, which are influenced strongly by the geometry of attachments, weld toes and the crack shapes. For the effective calculation of the stress intensity factors the Mk-factor was introduced which can be derived by a parametric study performed by FEM considering influence of the geometrical effects. The fatigue life of the cruciform joint was estimated by using the Mk-factors and the method considering the propagation mechanisms of the multiple surface cracks. Analysis results for the fatigue life had a good agreement with that of experiment.

  • In this study, when variable-amplitude load with various applying mode acts on the pre-crack tip, we examined how fatigue cracks behave. Hence aspects of the deformation caused by changing the applying mode of single overload and propagation behavior of fatigue crack were experimentally examined: What kinds of the deformation would be formed at pre-crack and its tip\ulcorner What aspects of the residual plastic deformation field would be formed in front of a crack\ulcorner How aspects of the plastic zone could be evaluated\ulcorner As applying mode of single overloading changes, the deformation caused by tensile and shear loading variously showed in each applying mode. The different aspects of deformation make influence on propagation behavior of cracks under constant-amplitude fatigue loading after overloading with various modes. We tried to examine the relationship between aspects of deformation and fatigue behavior by comparing the observed deformation at crack and crack propagation behavior obtained from fatigue tests.

  • The exhaust nozzle serves back pressure of Pulse detonation combustor, so combustion chamber gets sufficient pressure for propulsion. In this context recent researches are focused on influence of nozzle effect on single cycle detonation wave propagation and propulsion performance of PDE. The effects of various nozzles like convergent-divergent nozzle, convergent nozzle, divergent nozzle and without nozzle at exit section of detonation tubes were computationally investigated to seek the desired propulsion performance. Further the effect of divergent nozzle length and half angle on detonation wave structure was analyzed. The simulations have been done using Ansys 14 Fluent platform. The LES turbulence model was used to simulate the combustion wave reacting flows in combustor with standard wall function. From these numerical simulations among four acquaint nozzles the highest thrust augmentation could be attained in divergent nozzle geometry and detonation wave propagation velocity eventually reaches to 1830 m/s, which is near about C-J velocity. Smaller the divergent nozzle half angle has a significant effect on faster detonation wave propagation.

  • For the first time, longitudinal and transverse wave propagation of triclinic nanobeam is investigated via a size-dependent shear deformation theory including stretching effect. Furthermore, the influence of initial stress is studied. To consider the size-dependent effects, the nonlocal strain gradient theory is used in which two small scale parameters predict the behavior of wave propagation more accurately. The Hamiltonian principle is adopted to obtain the governing equations of wave motion, then an analytic technique is applied to solve the problem. It is demonstrated that the wave characteristics of the nanobeam rely on the wave number, nonlocal parameter, strain gradient parameter, initial stress, and elastic foundation. From this paper, it is concluded that the results of wave dispersion in isotropic and anisotropic nanobeams are almost the same in the presented case study. So, in this case, triclinic nanobeam can be approximated with isotropic model.

  • In the present work, an attempt is made to explore the effects of shear in-plane preload on the wave propagation response of small-scale plates containing nanofibers. The small-scale system is assumed to be embedded in an elastic matrix. The nonlocal elasticity is utilized in order to develop a size-dependent model of plates. The proposed plate model is able to describe both nanofiber effects and the influences of being at small-scales on the wave propagation response. The size-dependent differential equations are derived for motions along all directions. The size-dependent coupled equations are solved analytically to obtain the phase and group velocities of the small-scale plate under a shear in-plane preload. The effects of this shear preload in conjunction with nanofiber and size effects as well as the influences of the elastic matrix on the wave propagation response are analyzed in detail.

  • In this paper, a hybrid scaled boundary finite element and finite volume method (SBFEM-FVM) is proposed for simulating hydraulic-fracture propagation in brittle concrete materials. As a semi-analytical method, the scaled boundary finite element method is introduced for modelling concrete crack propagation under both an external force and water pressure. The finite volume method is employed to model the water within the crack and consider the relationship between the water pressure and the crack opening distance. The cohesive crack model is used to analyse the non-linear fracture process zone. The numerical results are compared with experimental data, indicating that the F-CMOD curves and water pressure changes under different loading conditions are approximately the same. Different types of water pressure distributions are also studied with the proposed coupled model, and the results show that the internal water pressure distribution has an important influence on crack propagation.

  • We study the bending wave, shear wave and longitudinal wave characteristics in the double nanobeams in this paper for the first time, in the process of research, based on the Reddy's higher-order shear deformation theory and considering shear layer stiffness, linear stiffness, inter-laminar stiffness, the pore volume fraction, temperature variation, functionally graded index influence on wave propagation, based on the nonlocal strain gradient theory and Hamilton variational principle, the wave equation of the double-nanometer beams are derived. Since there are three different motion states for the double nanobeams, which includes the cases of "in phase", "out of phase" and "one nanobeam fixed", the propagation characteristics of shear-, bending-, and longitudinal- waves in these three cases are discussed respectively, and some valuable conclusions are obtained.

  • The corrosion fatigue crack propagation characteristics of SS41 steel in 3.5% NaCl solution have been evaluated for loading frequencies of 1Hz and 0.2Hz. A sine wave loading profile was used for fatigue testing. Each test was carried out at a constant stress ratio, R(0.1). The main results are summarized as follows; 1. Fatigue crack propagation rate was higher in 3.5% NaCl solution than in air, higher in the base metal than in the weld metal, and higher at f =0.2Hz than at f =1Hz. 2. The crack closure level of the base metal was not influenced by cyclic frequencies, but that of the weld metal was much influenced. 3. When the crack closure effect was eliminated in the evaluation of crack propagation characteristics by using $\Delta K_{eff}$, the envirommental influence was distinctly observed. At the base metal, crack propagation rate was enhanced by the hydrogen embrittlement, and the weld metal was reduced by the crac closure. 4. There was clearly observed hydrogen embrittlement and severely corroded aspect at fracture surface of lower frequency than that of higher frequency, and at that of base metal than that of the weld metal.
