An infiltration storage can be installed as a method of reducing runoff from catchment and increasing stream flow during the dry period by recharging groundwater. However, there is no proper model and method that can be used to design storage capacity of an infiltration storage in Korea. The purpose of the study is to evaluate capacities of infiltration storages planned on Jeju-do in Korea by modifying Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). The basic equations for the infiltration storage are same as those of the infiltration trench used in MIDUSS. Infiltration rates of the infiltration storages were first measured by double ring infiltrometers, and then the modified model was applied to evaluate adequacy for the capacities of three infiltration storages planned on Jeju-do in Korea. The application results show that the two infiltration storages with higher infiltration rates have adequate capacities to infiltrate the total water inflow to the storages. However, the other infiltration storage with lower infiltration rates has not sufficient capacity to infiltrate the total water inflow to the storage and release occurs to the downstream region. The simulation model and method applied can be used for capacity evaluation of future infiltration storages on highly pervious areas in Jeju-do.
Purpose: This study has developed economical and environmentally friendly storage type infiltration facilities that securing storage space inside the infiltration facility. It focused on preventing flooding rainfall as well as securing more groundwater through rainwater infiltration that is valuable for the dry season. In addition, this study compares the installation cost of the storage-type infiltration facility to the cost of the conventional rainwater management facilities to demonstrate the economic efficiency of the storage-based infiltration facility. Method: Unit infiltration of this facility is calculated and when it was applied to a certain capacity, the amount of countermeasures are proposed in case study. Result: Unit infiltration of it is $0.2541m^3/hr$ and un it Temporary storage of it is $1.054m^3/m$. As a result, the infiltration effect of this facility is $1.306m^3/hr$. The cost was approximately 30% reduction in time to apply the storage type infiltration facility as compared with the case to apply the existing penetration of the facilities. Since the penetration of the existing facilities is smaller than that and it has much securing volume to process the same the amount of countermeasures. Therefore, it is determined that the cost significantly increases in material cost part. On the other hand, storage type infiltration facility is installed a small quantity because Unit Temporary storage and infiltration are bigger than that. So, it occurred to reduce material and installation costs.
The runoff-reducing facilities using infiltration was considered for the sustainable and sound water management. However, for practical utilization, many problems are attended and therefore effort on improvements are required. In this study, methods of improvement for infiltration facilities proposed by Infiltration-Storage System (ISS) and the effect of runoff reduction were analyzed by hydraulic experimental study. In order to analyze the infiltration characteristics of proposed runoff reduction facilities in this study, it was applied to various rainfall condition and surface material considering development and urbanization influences. As a results of hydraulic model experiment, Infiltration-Storage System (ISS) made addition to effect of reduction by lower layer of accumulative infiltration quantities. And then as rainfall-intensity was increased, accumulative infiltration rates were increased in this study. Thus, Infiltration-Storage system (ISS) was more efficient than existing runoff reduction facilities because of increasing infiltration rate. Such a result was guaranteed application of ISS as runoff-reducing facilities. Therefore, ISS is expected to be capable for practical application if subsequent research for improvements are followed. Additionally, results of this study are expected to provide fundamental research data on infiltration facilities.
This study was carried out to investigate the water storage charateristics of surface soil by different forest floor conditions and to measure water storage capacity of forest Land at the Yeungnam University forest in Yongjang-ri, Nenam-myoen, Kyongju-gun, Kyongsangbuk-do. The study was conducted for 4 months, from June to September, 1993. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. Infiltration capacity of surface soil for each. forest floor condition was in the order : Oak forest>Oak forest removed $A_o$ layer>Pine forest removed $A_o$ layer>Pine forest>Bare land>Grasses. 2. The absolute values of infiltration capacity were increased as the rain intensity increased, while the order of infiltration capacity for each floor condition was not changed. 3. Infiltration capacity was highly correlated with surface soil hardness and todal pores. 4. Infiltration formula based on the Horton's could be estimated at each forest floor condition. 5. The model for water storage capacity of forest land expressed by infiltration capacity was estimated using total pores and soil hardness. This study indicates water storage capacity of different forest floor conditions depends on infiltration capacity. Using these formula, it was possible to calculate and estimate water storage capacity of forest land. Therefore, the result of this study will be helpful to increase water storage capacity of forest land and to manage water resources effectively.

The variation of hydraulic and hydrologic aspect of urban area according to the strongly seasonal variation of rainfall and the increment of urbanization has caused the runoff variation and increased the flood damage, and thus made a difficulty to manage water resources in urban area. Recently, as a part of efforts to resolve these problems, the facilities for reducing runoff increasing due to urbanization have a tendency to install in our country. In this study, more effective Infiltration-Storage System(ISS) is proposed and its reducing effect is analyzed by hydraulic experimental study. The infiltration characteristics of runoff reduction facilities are examined as varying artificial rainfall and a material of infiltration layers being able to consider the influence of urban development. As a result of comparison of infiltration rate of the upper and lower parts, the infiltration rate in the lower part is larger than that of the upper part. Thus, the ISS is more available than existing runoff reduction facilities. Results obtained in this study can be provided fundamental data for improvement of existing runoff reduction facilities and practical use of ISS.
Increasing soil surface roughness can be effective in enhancing infiltration of rainfall and depression storage capacity of forest soil and reducing surface run-off. In this study, a forest slope with hemispherical depressions shows greater infiltration of water, whereas depression storage capacity is higher in soil with depressions perpendicular to a water flow pathway. Soil pitting or forming surface depressions can be used as a countermeasure after forest fires and a practical way to reduce drought stress of forest soil.

This study addresses the escalating flood damages prompted by recent climate shifts characterized by extreme weather events and proposes rainwater infiltration blocks as a potential solution. Recognizing the limitations inherent in existing inundation simulation methods, we advocate for the integration of novel functionalities, particularly leveraging drone technology. Our research endeavors encompass experimental assessments of inundation and flooding simulation technologies. These evaluations are conducted within areas where rainwater infiltration storage blocks have been implemented, juxtaposed against existing programs utilizing Digital Elevation Models(DEM) and Digital Surface Models(DSM). Through this comparative analysis and a meticulous scrutiny of the adaptability of inundation and flooding simulation to real-world deployment scenarios, we ascertain the efficacy of the simulation program as a decision-making tool for identifying optimal sites for rainwater infiltration storage block installation.
In this study, a runoff hydrograph and runoff volume were calculated by using the kinetic wave theory for small urban watersheds based on the concept of low impact development(LID), and the effective imperviousness was estimated based on these calculations. The degree of sensitivity of the effective imperviousness of small watersheds to the impervious to pervious area ratio, infiltration capability, watershed slope, roughness coefficient and surface storage depth was then analyzed. From this analysis, the following conclusions were obtained: The effective imperviousness and paved area reduction factor decreased as the infiltration capability of pervious area increased. As the slope of watersheds becomes sharper, the effective imperviousness and the paved area reduction factor display an increasing trend. As the roughness coefficient of impervious areas increases, the effective imperviousness and the paved area reduction factor tend to increase. As the storage depth increases, the effective imperviousness and the paved area reduction factor show an upward trend, but the increase is minimal. Under the conditions of this study, it was found that the effective imperviousness is most sensitive to watershed slope, followed by infiltration capability and roughness coefficient, which affect the sensitivity of the effective imperviousness at a similar level, and the storage depth was found to have little influence on the effective imperviousness.
As environmental problems and water-shortage phenomenon become a global issue, many states look for the effective method to use water resources. So, decentralized rainwater management is recognized as a new water management system that rainwater can be infiltrated and used on-site. But it is little difficult to build a park, lake, and forest for evaporating rainwater in city because the land price of city is very high. In order to build an excellent infiltration system for a dwelling and a park in Korea, KICT has developed Linear infiltration system. This infiltration system is consist of first flush treatment, storage and infiltration, overflow control system. These elements are connected closely and working as a combined system. A storm sewer can be changed by the linear infiltration system. This study is to show real application idea about Linear infiltration system with improving some detail in apartments. For this purpose, we devide application idea into the artificial ground and the natural ground and each ground type, suggest a method to cooperate with the other landscape and linear infiltration system. Through this study, we came to recognize a recognition difference of an expert and a commoner about decentralized rainwater management.
Apparent changes in the natural hydrologic cycle causing more frequent floods in urban areas and surface water quality impairment have led stormwater management solutions towards the use of green and sustainable practices that aims to replicate pre-urbanization hydrology. Among the widely documented applications are infiltration techniques that temporarily store rainfall runoff while promoting evapotranspiration, groundwater recharge through infiltration, and diffuse pollutant reduction. In this study, a laboratory-scale infiltration device was built to be able to observe and determine the factors affecting flow variations and corresponding solids removal through a series of experiments employing semi-synthetic stormwater runoff. Results reveal that runoff and solids reduction is greatly influenced by the infiltration capability of the underlying soil which is also affected by rainfall intensity and the available depth for water storage. For gravel-filled structures, a depth of at least 1 m and subsoil infiltration rates of not more than 200 mm/h are suggested for optimum volume reduction and pollutant removal. Moreover, it was found that the length of the structure is more critical than the depth for applications in low infiltration soils. These findings provide a contribution to existing guidelines and current understanding in design and applicability of infiltration systems.
