Wet-type particulate removal system is employed in most of ironmaking processes. These de-dusting systems require additional downstream aggregates for treatment of water and for drying of the collected slurry. Thus dried slurry can be pressed in shape of briquettes and recycled in the steelmaking process. Different from the wet-type, the dry-type particulate removal systems generate no slurry. A high-temperature, high-pressure de-dusting system with inertial inlet was developed. The target application of this system was to remove particulate matter generated from the novel ironmaking process and other steelmaking processes. In this study we conducted tests with this newly developed system to evaluate the performance of the silica-carbide (SiC) ceramic filters. In addition, for purpose of comparison, we also conducted tests with a unit which has conventional direct inlet. Fe-Particles collected from the novel ironmaking process were used in our tests as test dusts. The temperature and the pressure were kept constant at their respective values $800^{\circ}C$ and $3kg_f/cm^2$.

Since the intake air of gas turbine engine of marine purpose contains water particles, inertial separator for separating the air and water particles are provided. Saw type and wave type separator are now used to separate inflow water particle from the gas. In this paper, the design parameters of saw type separator are studied by numerical simulations. Using the commercial CFD program, Star-CCM+, Lagrangian-Eulerian method was used to perform the analysis of two phase flow of the mist in the air. This method solves Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations in Eulerian framework for the continuous phase, while solves equation of motion for individual particles in Lagrangian framework. Lagrangian multiphase method was applied to monitor the particles of different sizes and shapes and to verify collision between particles by chasing particles. Water particles were injected through injectors located at the inlet of the separator and escape mode was used which assumes that the particles attached on the surface of inertial separator were removed from the simulation, effectively escaping the solution domain. Through the numerical computations with the inlet condition of constant water particle size in the wetness fraction of 85%, efficiency of eliminating the water particle and the pressure drop between the inlet and outlet were examined.

A turboprop aircraft for this study is required to operate at icing condition in order that it performs its given mission. So an air intake system of the turboprop aircraft should be designed and verified not only to provide the maximum possible total pressure at engine inlet at normal flight condition, but also to include an inertial separator which protects Foreign Object Debris (FOD) like ice or snow at icing condition from entering into the engine inlet screen which can cause or lead an catastrophic engine failure like engine flame-out or severe damage. So an air intake assembly incorporating a variable geometry inertial separator has been designed and then CFD/structural analysis for the assembly was performed to see its design results. Then 35% scaled model of the air intake assembly was manufactured and wind tunnel test was done. This paper describes the detailed design results for the aerodynamic design, analysis and wind tunnel testing during the development process of the air intake assembly.

The effect of block arrangement has been investigated on the particle deposition in the specified collecting cell of two-stage electrostatic precipitator by numerical analysis. Recirculation zone existed at the downstream of the block in the collecting cell, and the particles entering the recirculation zone were deposited on the collecting plate. Particle trajectory and deposition had considerably different phenomenon according to electrostatic and inertial effect, which depended on inlet mean velocity, electrostatic number, and particle diameter in the collecting cell. The total collection efficiency reached a minimum value through an interaction of electrostatic and inertial effect. In the computational domain, total collection efficiency for the case of two blocks in the computational domain was more than that of one block at the relative small electrostatic number. However as the block distance and inertial effect increased, the difference between the collection efficiency of two cases decreased. In the range of relatively small particle size total collection efficiency was always superior to particle collection efficiency that was predicted by Deutsch equation.

In this study the effects of block distance have been investigated on the particle deposition efficiency in the collecting cell of two-stage electrostatic precipitator by numerical analysis. Particle trajectories have been changed by the electrostatic and inertial force of particle with the inlet velocity electrostatic number and particle diameter. The total deposition efficiency has a minimum value by the interaction between the effect of particle inertial force and electrostatic force in the collecting cell. The increase of block distance makes the total deposition efficiency decrease under the range of the particle size which has the minimum deposition efficiency. However beyond the range of particle size which has minimum deposition efficiency total deposition efficiency has no trend with the variation of block distance.
Removal of water contents in a gas is needed in industrial field of gas processing related on energy production/conversion, and environmental treatment. Inertial separators are economic devices for separating droplets from the gas stream. For accurate understanding of removal process in a curved vane mist eliminator, a numerical model including turbulent dispersion, evaporation and condensation of water vapor at surface of droplets is required. A two-stage curved vane mist eliminator has been modeled, and fluid flow of mixture of air and water vapor and droplet trajectories were solved simultaneously with taking into account two-way coupling. Removal efficiency of droplets with various inlet condition of relative humidities (RH, 40%, 90%, and 100%) were compared. As RH increased, the effect of evaporation decreased and inertial separation efficiencies of droplets obtained increased especially for droplets of diameter below 10 micrometers.
The flow and the heat transfer about the cross-flow fin-tube heat exchanger in an out-door unit of a heat pump system has been numerically Investigated. Using the general purpose analysis code, FLUENT, the Navier-Stokes equations and the energy equation are solved for the three dimensional computation domain that encompasses multiple rows of the fin-tube. The temperature on the fin and tube surface is assumed constant but compensated later through the fin efficiency when predicting the heat-transfer rate. The contact resistance is also taken into consideration. The flow and temperature fields for a wide range of inlet velocity and fin-tube arrangements are examined and the results are presented in the paper. The details of the flow are very well captured and the heat transfer rate for a range of inlet velocity is in excellent agreement with the measured data. The flow solution provides the effective permeability and the inertial resistance factor of the heat exchanger if the exchanger were to be approximated by the porous medium. This information is essential in carrying out the global flow field calculation which, in turn, provides the inlet velocity lot the microscopic temperature-field calculation of the heat exchanger unit.

In this paper we present the numerical results of the behavior of the horizontal vortex generated by ejecting a liquid vertically upward from an orifice into the bulk fluid above the orifice. The numerical calculation has been performed for the axi-symmetric Navier-Stokes equation. A simple flow-visualization experiment was also conducted to qualitatively verify the numerical solutions. Three cases of the flow configurations studied in this paper are; firstly, the vortex was generated without any background rotation, secondly, the vortex was made under a full background rotation, and thirdly, the vortex was made during the spin-up process such that only the region adjacent to the side wall was set into motion viewed in the inertial frame of reference. It was shown that the swirl flow at the inlet boundary affects considerably the formation and development of the vortex for the second case. In the third case, it was remarkable to see that the vortex cannot penetrate into the region near to the side wall of the tank, because of the strong swirl flow and corresponding high pressure gradient in the region.

Because real flow of engine exhaust is very hot and highly transient, it may cause thermal and inertial loads on catalyzed filters in DPF. Transient and detailed flow and thermal simulations are necessary in this field. To assess the importance of time dependent phenomena, typical cone-type configuration such as an underbody DPF is selected for steady and transient analysis. User defined functions of FLUENT by sinusoidal inlet velocities are written and integrated with main solver for realistic simulation. Also, 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines for 3,000 L class are considered for the dynamic exhaust effect of engine type. Key parameters to understanding of catalyst performance and durability issues such as flow uniformity index and peak velocity are investigated. Also, pressure drop for engine power are considered. From the simulation results for three different cases, proper approach is recommended.
Here we demonstrate complex transient behavior of viscoelastic liquid described numerically with the Leonov model in straight and contraction channel flow domains. Finite element and implicit Euler time integration methods are employed for spatial discretization and time marching. In order to stabilize the computational procedure, the tensor-logarithmic formulation of the constitutive equation with SUPG and DEVSS algorithms is implemented. For completeness of numerical formulation, the so called traction boundaries are assigned for flow inlet and outlet boundaries. At the inlet, finite traction force in the flow direction with stress free condition is allocated whereas the traction free boundary is assigned at the outlet. The numerical result has illustrated severe forward-backward fluctuations of overall flow rate in inertial straight channel flow ultimately followed by steady state of forward flow. When the flow reversal occurs, the flow patterns exhibit quite complicated time variation of streamlines. In the inertialess flow, it takes much more time to reach the steady state in the contraction flow than in the straight pipe flow. Even in the inertialess case during startup contraction flow, quite distinctly altering flow patterns with the lapse of time have been observed such as appearing and vanishing of lip vortices, coexistence of multiple vortices at the contraction comer and their merging into one.
