It was demonstrated earlier that for laminar, isothermal flow of the lubricant in long journal bearings, inertia has negligible effect on the load carrying capacity and influences only the stability characteristics of the bearing. The question in the present paper is: 'will these conclusions of the isothermal theory remain valid in the presence of significant dissipation, or will lubricant inertia and dissipation interact non-linearly to bring about qualitative changes in bearing performance\ulcorner' The results obtained here assert that the effect of lubricant inertia on load carrying capacity remains negligible, irrespective of the rate of dissipation. The stability of the bearing is, however, affected by lubricant inertia. These results, although obtained here for long bearings with Sommerfeld and Gumbel boundary conditions, are believed to be applicable to practical bearing operations and affirm that bearing load may be calculated from classical, i. e., non-inertial theory.
This paper deals with the dynamic stability of a disc brake pad taking into account of its shear deformation and rotary inertia. A brake pad can be modeled as a beam like model subjected to distributed friction forces and having two translational springs. The study of this model is intended to provide a fundamental understanding of dynamic stability of drum brake pad. Governing equations of motion are derived from extended Hamilton's principle and their corresponding numerical solutions are obtained by applying the finite element formulation. The critical distributed friction force and the instability types are investigated bt changing two translational spring constants, rotary inertia parameter and shear deformation parameter. Also, the changes of eigen-frequencies of a beam determining instability types are investigated for various combinations of two translational spring constants.
This paper presents the dynamic stability of a cantilevered Timoshenko beam on partial elastic foundations subjected to a follower force. The beam with a tip concentrated mass is assumed to be a Timoshenko beam taking into account its rotary inertia and shear deformation. Governing equations are derived by extended Hamilton's principle, and finite element method is applied to solve the discretized equation. Critical follower force depending on the attachment ratios of partial elastic foundations, rotary inertia of the beam and magnitude and rotary inertia of the tip mass is fully investigated.
On the stability of the Timoshenko cantilever column subjected of a compressive follower force, the influences of the moment of inertia of the tip mass at the free end and the characteristics of a translational spring at the free end of the column are studied. The equations of motion and boundary conditions of system are estabilished by using the d'Alembert virtual work of principle. On the evaluation of stability of the column, the effect of the shear deformation and rotatory inertia is considered in calculation. The moment of inertia of the tip mass at the free end of the column is changed by adjusting the distance c, from the free end of the column to the tip mass center. The free end of the column is supported elastically by a translational spring. For the maintenance of the good stability of the column, it is also proved that the constant of the translational spring at the free end must be very large for the case without a tip mass while it must be small for the case with a tip mass. Therefore, it is found that the shape of the tip mass and the characteristic of the spring at the free end are very effective elements for the stability of the column when the columns subjected to a compressive follower force are designed.
This paper deals with the operation strategy of the Cheju AC network included MIHVDC system (Multi-Infeed HVDC system). In case that where several HVDC systems are located in the vicinity of each other, there are interactions between the different HVDC systems in such network configurations. The interactions which could be generated in multi-infeed HVDC are voltage stability, power stability and inertia stability, to analyze such systems in a systematic way to ensure that there are no risks of adverse interactions is very important. The developed method until now to analyze MIHVDC interaction is extended from MAP(Maximum Available Power) method for analyzing the power stability of the single-infeed HVDC system, this method is to solve the eigenstructure using the identified factors influencing the interactions. Finally, the algorithms which are introduced in this paper, to determine the operation strategy are applied to Cheju island network which is supplied by two HVDCs.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the stability of stepped cantilever columns with a tip mass of rotatory inertia and a translational spring at one end. The column model is based on the Bernoulli-Euler theory which neglects the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation. The governing differential equation for the free vibration of columns with stepwise variable cross-section and subjected to a subtangential follower force is solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. And the bisection method is used to calculate the critical divergence/flutter load. The frequency and critical divergence/flutter load for the stepped column with a single step are presented as functions of various non-dimensional system parameters: the segmental length parameter, the section ratio, the subtangential parameter, the mass, the moment of inertia of the mass, and the spring parameter.
An analysis for turbulent hybrid beatings with fluid inertia and swirl injection effect was derived for studying static characteristics of swirl-controlled hybrid journal. The swirl-controlled hybrid journal beating is considered to have more freedom in stability control in high speed rotating machinery. Current analysis is compared with experimental results with 3-recess hydrostatic journal bearing. The analysis revealed that the fluid momentum exchange at orifice discharge could produce pressure rise inside the recess region which can control the shear flow induced by journal rotation. The analysis also shows that the swirl-controlled hybrid journal beating has a capability of controlling load carrying capacity and stability by manipulating supply pressure and injection angle.
In four cylinder engine, the second order inertia force occurs due to the reciprocating parts of the cylinder. Because the magnitude of the inertia force is proportional to a square of the angular velocity of crank shaft, engine gets suffered from vibration excited by unbalanced inertia force in high speed. This vibration excited by the unbalanced inertia force can be canceled by applying a balance shaft. Balance shaft has one or more unbalance mass and rotates twice quickly than the crank shaft. In this paper, an unbalanced force caused by the rotating of unbalance mass of balance shafts was calculated. The directional equivalent stiffness and damping coefficients of the journal bearing of balance shafts was calculated. Equations of rotational vibration modes were derived using directional stiffness and damping coefficients. The dynamic stability of balance shafts was analyzed and evaluated for two type models using the equivalent stiffness and damping coefficients. An efficient procedure to he able to evaluate dynamic stability and design optimal balance shaft was proposed.
An analysis is presented on the stability of an elastic cantilever column having the elastic restraints at its free end, carrying an added tip mass, and subjected to uniformly distributed follower forces. The elastic restraints are formed by both a translational spring and a rotatory spring. For this purpose, the governing equations and boundary conditions are derived by using Hamilton's principle, and the critical flutter loads and frequencies are obtained from the numerical evaluation of the eigenvalue functions of this elastic system. The added tip mass increases as a whole the critical flutter load of the elastic cantilever column, but the presence of its moment of inertia of mass has a destabilizing effect. The existence of the translational and rotatory springs at the free end increases the critical flutter load of the elastic cantilever column. Nevertheless, their effects on the critical flutter load are not uniform because of their coupling. The translational spring restraining the free end of the cantilever column decreases the critical flutter load by coupling with a large value of tip mass, while by coupling with the moment of inertia of tip pass its effect on the critical flutter load is contrary. The rotatory spring restraining the free end of the cantilever column increases the critical flutter load by coupling with the tip mass, but decreases it by coupling with the moment of inertia of the tip mass.
This paper presents the dynamic stability of a cantilevered Timoshenko beam with a concentrated mass, partially attached to elastic foundations, and subjected to a follower force. Governing equations are derived from the extended Hamilton's principle, and FEM is applied to solve the discretized equation. The influence of some parameters such as the elastic foundation parameter, the positions of partial elastic foundations, shear deformations, the rotary inertia of the beam, and the mass and the rotary inertia of the concentrated mass on the critical flutter load is investigated. Finally, the optimal attachment ratio of partial elastic foundation that maximizes the critical flutter load is presented.
