This paper demonstrates numerical techniques for complex large-scale modeling with microplane constitutive theories for reinforced high strength concrete, which for these applications, is defined to be around the 7000 psi (48 MPa) strength as frequently found in protective structural design. Applications involve highly impulsive loads, such as an explosive detonation or impact-penetration event. These capabilities were implemented into the authors' finite element code, ParaAble and the PRONTO 3D code from Sandia National Laboratories. All materials are explicitly modeled with eight-noded hexahedral elements. The concrete is modeled with a microplane constitutive theory, the reinforcing steel is modeled with the Johnson-Cook model, and the high explosive material is modeled with a JWL equation of state and a programmed burn model. Damage evolution, which can be used for erosion of elements and/or for post-analysis examination of damage, is extracted from the microplane predictions and computed by a modified Holmquist-Johnson-Cook approach that relates damage to levels of inelastic strain increment and pressure. Computation is performed with MPI on parallel processors. Several practical analyses demonstrate that large-scale analyses of this type can be reasonably run on large parallel computing systems.

Structural materials can experience large plastic deformation under extreme cyclic loading that is caused by events like earthquakes. To evaluate the seismic safety of a structure, accurate numerical material models should be used. For a steel structure, the cyclic strain hardening behavior of structural steel should be correctly modeled. In this study, a combined hardening model, consisting of one isotropic hardening model and three nonlinear kinematic hardening models, was used. To determine the values of the combined hardening model parameters efficiently and accurately, the improved opposition-based particle swarm optimization (iOPSO) model was adopted. Low-cycle fatigue tests were conducted for three steel grades commonly used in Korea and their modeling parameters were determined using iOPSO, which was first developed in Korea. To avoid expensive and complex low cycle fatigue (LCF) tests for determining the combined hardening model parameter values for structural steel, empirical equations were proposed for each of the combined hardening model parameters based on the LCF test data of 21 steel grades collected from this study. In these equations, only the properties obtained from the monotonic tensile tests are required as input variables.

Ratcheting is the cyclic buildup of inelastic strain on a structure resulting from a combination of primary and secondary cyclic stress. It can lead to excessive plastic deformation, incremental collapse, or fatigue. Ratcheting has been numerically investigated on a cantilever beam, considering the current study's primary and secondary bending loads. In addition, the effect of input frequency on the onset of ratcheting has been investigated. The non-linear dynamic elastic-plastic approach has been utilized. Analogous to Yamashita's bending-bending ratchet diagram, a non-dimensional ratchet diagram with a frequency effect is proposed. The result presents that the secondary stress values fall sequentially with the increase of primary stress values. Moreover, a displacement amplification factor graph is also established to explain the effect of frequency on ratchet occurrence conditions. In terms of frequency effect, it has been observed that the lower frequency (0.25 times the natural frequency) was more detrimental for ratchet occurrence conditions than the higher frequency (2 times the natural frequency) due to the effect of dynamic displacement. Finally, the effect of material modeling of ratcheting behavior on a beam is shown using different hardening coefficients of kinematic hardening material modeling.
The Cu/Ni/Cu(002)/Si(100) films which have perpendicular magnetic anisotropy were deposited by e-beam evaporation methods. From the reflection high energy electron diffraction pattern, the films were confirmed to be grown epitaxially on silicon. After 2X lots ions/$\textrm{cm}^2$ C+ irradiation, magnetic easy-axis was changed from surface normal to in-plane as shown in the hysteresis loop of magneto-optical Kerr effects. It became manifest from analysis of X-ray reflectivity and grazing incident X-ray diffraction that even though interface between top Cu layer and Ni layer became rougher, the contrast of Cu and Ni's electron density became manifest after ion irradiation. In addition, the strain after deposition of the films was relaxed after ion irradiation. Strain relaxation related with change of magnetic properties and mechanism of intermixed layer's formation was explained by thermo-chemical driving force due to elastic and inelastic collision of ions.
The task of plastic theory is twofold: first, to set up relationships between stress and strain that adequately describe the observed plastic deformation of metals, and second, to develop techniques for using these relationships in studying of the mechanics of metal forming processes, and the anlaysis and design of structures. One of the major problems in the theory of plasticity is to describe the behavior of work-hardening materials in the plastic range for complex loading histories. This can be achieved by formulating constitutive laws either in the integral or differential forms. To adequately predict the response of steel members during cyclic loading, the hardening rule must account for the features of cyclic stress-strain behavior. Neithe of the basic isotropic and kinematic hardening rules is suitable for describing cyclic streess-strain behavior, although a kinematic hardening rule describes the nearly linear portions of the stabilized hystersis loops. There is also a limited expansion of the yield surface as predicted by the isotropic hardening rule. Strong ground motions or wind gusts affect the complex and nonproportional loading histories in the inelastic behavior of structues rather than the proportional loading. Nonproportional loading is defined as externally applied forces on the structure, with variable ratios during the entire loading history. This also includes the rate of time-dependency of the loads. For nonproportional loading histories, unloading may take place along a chord instead of the radius of the load surface. In such cases, the shape of the stress-strain curve has to be determined experimentally for all non-radial loading conditions. The plasticity models including two surface models ae surveyed based on a yield surface and a bound surface that represent a state of maximum stress. This paper is concerned with the improvement of a plasticity models of the two-surface type for structural steel. This is follwed by an overview of plasticity models on structural steel. Finally the need for further research is identified.

The length of the links in an eccentrically braced frame will dictate the behavior of the frame. Link length controls the yielding mechanism and the ultimate failure mode. For short links, the links' shear forces reach the plastic shear capacity before the end moments reach the plastic moment capacity, and the links yields in the shear, forming a shear hinges. These links are termed "shear links." For long links, the end moments reach the plastic moment capacity before the links' shear forces reach the plastic shear capacity, forming moment hinges. These links are termed moment links." In long links, flexural yielding dominates the response, and very high bending strains are required at the link ends to produce large link deformations. In a shear links, the shear force is constant along the length of the links, and the inelastic shear strain are is uniformly distributed over the length of the links. This permits the development of large inelastic link deformations without the development of excessively high local strains. However, The use of eccentrically braced steel frames for the purpose of architectural cionsiderations such as openings and doors, areis dictating the use of longer links, though. Little data areis available on the behavior of long links under cyclic loading conditions. In This paper documents the results of an experimental program is that was conducted to assess the response of moment links in eccentrically braced frames. Sixteen specimens awere tested using a cyclic load.
In the companion paper (Model Development), an analytical model estimating the available rotation capacity of fully restrained beam-column connections in special steel moment-resisting frames was proposed. In this paper, two limit states were considered as the connection rotation capacity criteria: (i) strength degradation failure when the strength falls below the nominal plastic strength due to the local buckling of the beam's cross-section and (ii) low-cycle fatigue fracture caused by plastic strain accumulation at the buckled flange after only a few cycles of high-amplitude deformation. A series of analyses are conducted using the proposed model with two limit states under monotonic and cyclic loadings. Beam section geometric parameters, such as flange and web slenderness ratios, varied over the practical ranges of H-shapedbeams to observe their effect on the rotation capacity and low-cycle fatigue life of pre-qualified WUF-W connections.
To improve braced frame performance, the connection strength, stiffness, and ductility must be directly considered in the frame design. The resistance of the connection must be designed to resist seismic loads and to help provide the required system ductility. In addition, the connection stiffness affects the dynamic response and the deformation demands on the structural members and connections. In this paper, current design models for gusset plate connections are reviewed and evaluated usingthe results of past experiments. Current models are still not sufficient to provide adequate connection design guidelines and the actual stress and strain states in the gusset plate are very nonlinear and highly complex. Design engineers want simple models with beam and column elements to make an approximate estimation of system and connection performance. The simplified design models are developed and evaluated to predict connection stiffness and system behavior. These models produce reasonably accurate and reliable estimation of connection stiffness.

An efficient numerical procedure for material and geometric nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete shells under monotonically increasing loads through their elastic, inelastic and ultimate load ranges is developed by using the finite element method. The 8-node Serendipity isoparametric element developed by the degeneration approach including the transverse shear deformation is used. A layered approach is used to represent the steel reinforcement and to discretize the concrete behavior through the thickness. The total Lagrangian formulation based upon the simplified Von Karman strain expressions is used to take into account the geometric nonlinearity of the structure. The material nonlinearities are taken into account by comprising the tension, compression, and shear models of cracked concrete and a model for reinforcement in the concrete; and also a so-called smeared crack model is incorporated. The steel reinforcement is assumed to be in a uniaxial stress state and is modelled as a smeared layer of equivalent thickness. This method will be verified a useful tool to account for geometric and material nonlinearities in detailed analysis of reinforced concrete concrete shells of general form through numerical examples of the sequential paper( ).
Conventional nonlinear finite element analysis requires complicated modeling and analytical technique. Furthermore, it is difficult to interpret the analytical results presented as the stress-strain relationship. In the present study, a design-oriented analytical method using the truss model was developed. A reinforced concrete member to be analyzed was idealized by longitudinal, transverse, and diagonal line elements. Basically, each element was modeled as a composite element of concrete and re-bars. Simplified cyclic models for the concrete and re-bar elements were developed. RC beams and walls with various reinforcement details were analyzed by the proposed method. The inelastic strength, energy dissipation capacity, deformability, and failure mode predicted by the proposed method were compared with those of existing experiments. The results showed that the proposed model accurately predicted the strength and energy dissipation capacities, and to predict deformability of the members, the compression-softening model used for the concrete strut element must be improved.
