  • The catalytic combustion of benzene, toluene and xylene over Pt-based catalyst was investigated in a fixed bed flow reactor system with atmospheric pressure to recycle the waste industrial catalyst for the processes of removing volatile organic compounds. According to the pretreatment condition, the properties of the waste Pt-based catalyst were characterized by XRD (X-ray diffraction) and BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Toller). In the carte of air pretreatment, 20$0^{\circ}C$ was found to be optimal, and increasing pretreatment temperature resulted in the reduction of the catalytic activity. When Pt-based catalyst pretreated at 20$0^{\circ}C$ by alto was retreated by hydrogen, the catalytic activity increased by increasing treatment temperature. In the case of HNO$_3$aqueous solution pretreatment, the catalytic activity decreased by increasing the concentration of HNO$_3$aqueous solution. The catalytic activity was seen to observe the following sequence : benzene > toluene > xylene.

  • Differences in risk perception on major environmental issues between general public and environmental experts were investigated in this study. Questionnaire surveys were conducted to samples from general public and environmental experts during March and April, 2000. Total number of responses was 1,126 including 773 persons from general public and 353 experts. Risk perceptions on 26 environmental issues were related with the need to regulate each issue, controllability, experience, political views, interest in environmental problem, satisfaction of environment, severity of environmental pollution. There was statistically significant difference in risk perceptions between general public and experts. Overall, general public was likely to perceive risks associated with environmental problem, as well as social need to regulate these problems more than experts. The issues with high risk perception and need to regulate were 'automobile exhaust', 'industrial air pollution', ocean pollution by industrial waste and oil exhaust', 'air pollution by chemicals', 'surface water pollution by waste from household', 'industrial and hospital waste', 'surface water pollution by pesticide'and'sewage and food waste'. Consequently, it seems necessary to manage these issues, prior to others.

  • Kobe Steel, LTD. and Midrex Technologies Inc. jointly developed the FASTMET$\circledR$ process as a steel mill waste recycle technology in which the DRI product meets BF feed material or BOF/EAF feed material requirements. FASTMET(R) process turns value-less wastes into valuable DRI and sellable zinc oxide, and gives the solution for the steel mill wastes recycling from both economical and environmental viewpoints. During the development of the process, Laboratory, Pilot Plant and Demonstration Plant tests were carried out from 1990 to 1998. The first FASTMET(R) commercial plant began operation in April, 2000 and the second commercial plant started in April, 2001 Both commercial plants have proceeded successfully preying that FASTMET$\circledR$ is a suitable process for recycling steel mill waste and for producing DRI as an iron source.

  • Ceramics manufacturers in the nation produced more than 5000 tons of ceramics wastes a year increasing industrial waste quantity: However, almost no researches were made to reduce environmental pollution and to recycle waste ware. In this study, white ware scraps that were produced at Icheon, Gyeonggi-do were recycled to make use of them as raw materials of ceramics body and to develop new ceramics body that had economic advantages and good quality. The findings showed that the addition of waste ware had limit of 20 wt% considering molding. The addition of waste ware of 20 wt% to white ware lowered baking temperature of the white ware that was added by waste ware of 20 wt% by 30$^{\circ}C$ than existing white ware, and property values were good, for instance, porosity of 3% in average and water absorptivity of 2% in average, and the bending strength recorded more than 800 kgf/$cm^2$ to be high than that of existing white ware being sold in market. The waste ware could be used to produce new ware body and to recycle resources and to solve environmental problems caused by burial and to improve property of ceramics and to save transportation costs as well as baking costs.

  • Zero waste fashion design to minimize the 15% fabric waste generated during production can be difficult to industrialize instead of having strong originality. This study designed shirts that are practical and reflect trends using the zero waste pattern cutting method and suggest the possibilities for industrial production. The content of the study are as follows. First, the pattern cutting method of zero waste fashion design was studied. Second, the recent trends of shirt design were analyzed and reflected in the design development. Third, 4 zero waste shirt designs were developed and produced by applying the geometric cutting, puzzle cutting, and minimal cutting methods. As for the research method, literature research was conducted on related references; in addition, design development and production were conducted empirically. As a result, the developed zero waste shirts are practical and trendy. In addition, the results of the study are meaningful to provide basic data for the commercialization and industrial application of zero waste fashion design.

  • It is considered that the construction industry is one of the pivotal players in the national economy in terms of Gross Domestic Production (GDP) and employment. Behind the positive role of this industrial sector to the national economy, the construction industry generates approximately 50 % of the total waste generation from all the industrial sectors. There are several measures to mitigate the adverse impacts of the construction waste such as reduce, reuse and recycle. Recycling would be one of the effective strategies for waste minimisation, which would be able to reduce the demand upon new resources as well as enhance reusing the construction materials on sites. The automated construction waste classification system would make it possible not only to reduce the amount of labour input but also mitigate the possibility of errors during the manual classification process. In this study, we proposed an automated waste segmentation and classification system for recycling the construction and demolition waste in the real construction site context. Since the practical application to the real-world construction sites was one of the significant factors to develop the system, a YOLACT (You Only Look At CoefficienTs) algorithm was chosen to conduct the study. In this study, it is expected that the proposed system would make it possible to enhance the productivity as well as the cost efficiency by reducing the manpower for the construction and demolition waste management at the construction site.

  • In the recycling of industrial waste unlike household waste, the legislation and the governmental systematic support, etc. were not also established due to an anxiety of hazard or harmfulness, etc. and a preconception. So the legislation and the system should be urgently established for the recycling of industrial waste. In this study, the environmental analyzing method of industrial waste-mixed coal ash in ash pond to recycle as a construction material is suggested by considering and analyzing test process and results about environmental impact factors of mixed coal ash. It is certified that there are not environmental problems in the recycling of mixed coal ash in ash pond as a construction material, according as its classification is general waste and each corresponding item of the leaching test result are satisfied with the 'environmental safety criteria' suggested in this study. And to build database, it is necessary to survey the environmental impact on surrounding areas with time after its recycling as a construction material.

  • Generation and recycling potential of organic waste in Korea were estimated. Status of organic waste composting and compost utilization also were surveyed to promote the recycling of organic waste. From 1994 to 1997, generation of garbage decreased gradually while recycling rate increased due to positive governmental strategy. During the same period, livestock waste increased 11.2%. Municipal wastewater sludge was generated 3,500 ton/day which was 0.03% of wastewater treated in 1996. The energy Potential of industrial organic waste was estimated to 288 million TOE which was 1.75% of the nationwide first energy consumption in 1996. Recycling of industrial sludge was low to 31%, while recycling of animal waste, plant scraps, and wasted paper were relatively high over 50%. Industrial sludge should be recycled more as it was the most part of industrial organic waste. Conventional composting materials were mainly livestock waste, food processing waste, fishery waste, sawdust, and nightsoil. Garbage and sludge have been composted recently. 420,000 tons of compost in 1996 were produced by 288 makers, the most of which were utilized in agriculture. It was suggested that separated collection, compost standard, and quality management should be provided to promote the composting of organic waste.
