Industrial processes need to be monitored in real-time based on the input-output data observed during their operation. Abnormalities in an induction motor should be detected early in order to avoid costly breakdowns. To early identify induction motor faults, this paper effectively estimates spectral envelopes of each induction motor fault by utilizing a linear prediction coding (LPC) analysis technique and an expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. Moreover, this paper classifies induction motor faults into their corresponding categories by calculating Mahalanobis distance using the estimated spectral envelopes and finding the minimum distance. Experimental results shows that the proposed approach yields higher classification accuracies than the state-of-the-art approach for both noiseless and noisy environments for identifying the induction motor faults.

Broken rotor bars in induction motors can be detected by monitoring any abnormality of the spectrum amplitudes at certain frequencies in the motor current spectrum. Broken rotor bar fault detection schemes should rely on multiple signatures in order to overcome or reduce the effect of any misinterpretation of the signatures that are obscured by factors such as measurement noises and different load conditions. Multiple Discriminant Analysis (MDA) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) provide appropriate environments to develop such fault detection schemes because of their multi-input processing capabilities. This paper describes two fault detection schemes for broken rotor bar fault detection with multiple signature processing, and demonstrates that multiple signature processing is more efficient than single signature processing.
This paper deals with the problem of detection of induction motor incipient faults. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approach is applied to detect two types of incipient faults (1). Interturn insulation and (2) Bearing wear faults in single-phase induction motor. The experimental data for five measurable parameters (motor intake current, rotor speed, winding temperature, bearing temperature and the noise) is generated in the laboratory on specially designed single-phase induction motor. Initially, the performance is tested with two inputs i.e. motor intake current and rotor speed, later the remaining three input parameters (winding temperature, bearing temperature and the noise) were added sequentially. Depending upon input parameters, the four ANN based fault detectors are developed. The training and testing results of these detectors are illustrated. It is found that the fault detection accuracy is improved with the addition of input parameters.
Induction motors are widely used in industrial processes since they offer a very high degree of reliability. But like any other machine, they are vulnerable to faults, which if left unmonitored, might lead to an unexpected interruption at the industrial plant. Therefore, the condition monitoring of the induction motors have been a challenging topic for many electrical machine researchers. Indeed, the effectiveness of the fault diagnosis and prognosis techniques depends very much on the quality of the fault features selection. However, in induction-motor drives, rotor defects are the most complex in terms of detection since they interact with the supply frequency within a restricted band around this frequency, especially in the no-loaded case. To overcome this drawback, this paper deals with an efficient and new method to diagnose the induction-motor rotor fault based on the digital implementation of the monitoring algorithm based on the association of the Time Synchronous Averaging technique and Discrete Wavelet Transform. Experimental results are presented in order to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. The obtained results are largely satisfactory, indicating a promising industrial application of the combined “Time Synchronous Averaging – Discrete Wavelet Transform” approach.
This paper presents stochastic methodology based fault diction and diagnosis algorithm for induction motor systems. First, we construct probability distribution model from healthy motors and then probability distribution for faulty motors is recursively calculated by means of the proposed probability estimation. We measure motor current with hall sensors as system state. The estimated probability is compared to the model to generate a residue signal which is utilized for fault detection and diagnosis, that is, where a fault is occurred. We carry out real-time induction motor experiment to evaluate efficiency and reliability of the proposed approach.
This paper proposes a new diagnosis algorithm to detect broken rotor bars (BRBs) faults in induction motors. The proposed algorithm is composed of a frequency signal dimension order (FSDO) estimator and a fault decision module. The FSDO estimator finds a number of fault-related frequencies in the stator current signature. In the fault decision module, the fault diagnostic index from the FSDO estimator is used depending on the load conditions of the induction motors. Experimental results obtained in a 75 kW three-phase squirrel-cage induction motor show that the proposed diagnosis algorithm is capable of detecting BRB faults with an accuracy that is superior to a zoom multiple signal classification (ZMUSIC) and a zoom estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ZESPRIT).

In this paper, an algorithm of fault detection and diagnosis during operation of induction motors under the condition of various loads and rates is investigated. For this purpose, the spectrum pattern of input currents is used in monitoring the state of induction motors, and by clustering the spectrum pattern of input currents, the newly occurrence of spectrum patterns caused by faults are detected. For the diagnosis of the fault detected, a fuzzy fault tree is designed, and the fuzzy relation equation representing the relation between an induction motor fault and each fault type, is solved. The solution of the fuzzy relation equation shows the possibility of occurence of each fault. The results obtained are summarized as follows : (1) Using clustering algorithm by unsupervised learning, an on-line fault detection method unaffected by the characteristics of loads and rates is implemented, and the degree of dependency for experts during fault detection is reduced. (2) With the fuzzy fault tree, the fault diagnosis process become systematic and expandable to the whole system, and the diagnosis for sub-systems can be made as an object-oriented module.
Many induction motor broken bar diagnosis methods are based on evaluating special components in machine signals spectrums. Current, power, flux, etc are among these signals. Frequencies related to a broken rotor fault are slip dependent, therefore, correct diagnosis of fault - especially when obtrusive frequency components are present - depends on accurate determination of motor velocity and slip. The traditional methods typically require several sensors that should be pre-installed in some cases. This paper presents a diagnosis method based on only a vibration sensor. Motor velocity oscillation due to a broken rotor causes frequency components at twice slip frequency difference around speed frequency in vibration spectrum. Speed frequency and its harmonics as well as twice supply frequency, can easily and accurately be found in a vibration spectrum, therefore th motor slip can be computed. Now components related to rotor fault can be found. It is shown that a trained neural network - as a substitute for an expert person - can easily categorize the existence and the severity of a fault according to the features extracted from the presented method. This method requires no information about th motor internal and has been able to diagnose correctly in all the laboratory tests.
This paper deals with artificial neural network approach for automatic detection of severity level of stator winding fault in induction motor. The problem is faced through modelling and simulation of induction motor with inter coil shorting in stator winding. The sum of the absolute values of difference in the peak values of phase currents from each half cycle has been chosen as the main input to the classifier. Sample values from workspace of Simulink model, which are verified with experiment setup practically, have been imported to neural network architecture. Consideration of a single input extracted from time domain simplifies and advances the fault detection technique. The output of the feed forward back propagation neural network classifies the short circuit fault level of the stator winding.
