  • For home networking system with a function of air quality monitoring, a wireless sensor module with several air quality monitoring sensors was developed for indoor environment monitoring system in home networking. The module has various enlargements for various kinds of sensors such as humidity sensor, temperature sensor, CO2 sensor, flying dust sensor, and etc. The developed wireless module is very convenient to be installed on the wall of a room or office, and the sensors in the module can be easily replaced due to well designed module structure and RF connection method. To reduce the system cost, only one RF transmission block was used for sensors' signal transmission to 8051 microcontroller board in time sharing method. In this home networking system, various indoor environmental parameters could be monitored in real time from RF wireless sensor module. Indoor vision was transferred to client PC or PDA from surveillance camera installed indoor or desired site. Web server using Oracle DB was used for saving the visions by web-camera and various data from wireless sensor module.

  • This paper presents a 3-D finite difference time domain (FDTD) method used for indoor propagation simulations where the electromagnetic wav eis uniformly excited on th eone of the wall in a building and affected by an indoor obstacles. In cases of simulation and measurement, the frequency of 851 MHz is used. The conductivities of walls, floor, ceiling and indoor obstacles are measured and used for simulations. These simulations are carried out using different boundary condition such as mur's absorbing boundary condition (ABC) and perfectly matched layer (PML) technique. The PML technique is found to be well-suited to this analysis because of it's smaller computational domain than mur's ABC. The measured signal strengths are compared to simulated values with good agreement.

  • An efficient code has been developed to predict dispersion of indoor air pollutants The computing capability of the code has been compared with that of a commercial code inn a benchmark test. After that, the code has been employed to compute dispersion of a pollutant released from a new furniture, a kind of Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). A sofa which generates formaldehyde is implemented by using an immersed boundary method. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is employed to obtain time-dependent velocity and scalar fields. LES has bee regarded as an academic tool, but the newly-developed code reveals a possibility of application of LES to practical problems, especially dispersion of indoor pollutants.

  • This paper present an effective complementary filtering method using encoder and gyro sensors for the self-localization(including heading and velocity) of indoor mobile robot. The main idea of the proposed approach is to find the pros and cons of each sensor through a various maneuvering tests and to design of an adaptive complementary filter that works for the entire maneuvering phases. The proposed method is applied to an indoor mobile robot and the performances are verified through extensive experiments.

  • In this study, the control strategies of indoor air temperature in floor radiant heating system were researched by computer simulation. The temperature difference based time control method using the difference of indoor set temperature and indoor temperature is compared with the existing On-Off control one for heating control performances. As a result, the temperature difference based time control method shows better thermal environmental characteristics in case of selected operational conditions in comparison with existing control one.

  • Due to recent improvement of various sensor technologies, indoor positioning becomes available. However, Indoor positioning technologies by Wi-Fi radio map and acceleration sensor and digital campus still have a certain level of errors and a number of researches have been done to increase the positioning accuracy of the indoor positioning. If we could provide a room level accuracy, indoor location based services with current indoor positioning methods such as Wi-Fi radio map and acceleration sensors would be possible. In this paper, we propose an indoor map matching method to provide a room level accuracy based on hidden markov model.

  • The objective of this study is to identify the research trend in the field of indoor environment in Korea. We collected 419 papers published in the Journal of the Korean Society for indoor environment between 2004 and 2018, and attempted to produce datasets using a topic modeling technique, Latent Dirichlet Allocation(LDA). The result of topic modeling showed that 8 topics ("VOCs investigation", "Subway environment", "Building thermal environment", "School health", "Building particulate matter", "Asbestos risk", "Radon risk", "Air cleaner and treatment") could be extracted using Gibbs sampling method. In terms of topic trends, investigation of volatile organic compounds, subway environment, school health, and building particulate matter showed a decreasing tendency, while the building thermal environment, asbestos risk, radon risk, air cleaners, and air treatment showed an increasing tendency. The results of this topic modeling could help us to understand current trends related indoor environment, and provide valuable information in developing future research and policy frameworks.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method for improving the accuracy of localizing a robot to find the position of a robot in indoor environment. The proposed method uses visible light for indoor localization with a reference receiver to estimate optical power of individual LED in order to reduce localization errors which are caused by aging of LED components and different optical power for each individual LED, etc. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method by comparing it with the performance of traditional model. In several simulations, probability density functions and cumulative distribution functions of localization errors are also obtained. Results indicate that the proposed method is able to reduce localization errors from 7.3 cm to 1.6 cm with a precision of 95%.
